Ciaphas posted:like take those 'easy to parry' giants for example, you can't tell while waiting if they're gonna go for a long parryable attack or that four hit combo that's impossible to parry and eats half your life bar That's why you wait for the slow attacks that you know you have time to parry. The fast attacks come fast and you have to dodge fast, but with the slow attacks you have enough time to see they're doing a slow one, not dodge, and shoot. Pro tip for parrying Gascoigne specifically: Shoot when you see sparks on the ground.

In that case my recommendation would be to just not bother with parries unless you're sure you can get it in time. Parrying is a pretty important part of Bloodborne's combat but it's never necessary to win a fight, and in a lot of cases focusing too hard on parrying will get you killed because you can't move while firing. Since you have the blunderbuss, instead try jumping into enemies' faces and blasting them with it to stumble them in the non-parryable way. That's what it's better for, as opposed to the pistol which is good for precision parries.

I need a new game I can play with the keyboard only as my cat keeps stealing my chair and I don't have the heart to budge him. I'm still taking a break from Caves of Qud/Dungeonmans though as I burnt out hard on them and related roguelikes, so...hrm. I mean it's not an urgent need, and I'll keep browsing and stuff, but it's times like this that make me wish I hadn't marathoned all of Dungeonmans in like a week. Games need savoring or they become tiring very, very quickly.

Lizard Wizard posted:All I can do to keep from being a mess is to not think about it. That's perfectly fine and acceptable. Go ahead and take a breather and let your thoughts drift off for a bit. I often find it helps me best to let my brain rest and not think about things for a bit. Usually I'll play some kind of puzzle game or just go to sleep so that I can keep my brain off of the subject for a while, then by the time I am done, my brain will be feeling more up to thinking about it. You're a good person and nobody of any worthy is going to think bad of you for trying to avoid thinking about it. Good luck, Liz, and stay gold.

Playing Metro 2033 Redux for the first time. It's pretty good! Very linear, but shooting feels noice and it's still quite a looker.

Yeah, they're quite railroad-y Joking aside, the Metro games are fantastic, and while 2033 Redux is good (the original was not bad, but was janky as hell), LL is just brilliant.

Looking at what actually came out in 2016 I don't think I actually wound up playing any of the major releases, 2016 has been a year spent playing backlogs and Trails of Cold Steel. I did play AM2R though and would probably pick that if given the option.

Finally getting around to playing Arkham Knight on PS4. Probably one of the most fiddly games I've ever played and the Batmobile stinks. I want to finish it because I liked the other games in the series but everything about it is awkward as gently caress.

For someone who's never played a DS game, should Bloodborne be any more intimidating than the Devil May Cry series? spudsbuckley posted:Finally getting around to playing Arkham Knight on PS4. Curious what you mean by "fiddly". One thing I noticed was how there was a weird, small zone you had to be in to activate things. Like you'd think for pressing a button being closer to it would be a sure thing but it's possible to be too close.

Bloodborne is probably harder than Devil May Cry 4, but it's also got much friendlier controls and doesn't use the same type of combo systems. Bloodborne also doesn't have the ranking system of DMC. So while I barely limp through DMC getting C ratings, there is no such judgement in Bloodborne. Getting all S rankings in DMC is probably much harder than beating Bloodborne.

Sounds pretty close to what I expected. The thing about combos is I have no problem executing them - I just have a problem remembering them. When the Arkham games came along and moved beat-em-ups away from combo memorization it was a god-send. It's why playing Transformers Devastation felt so old, moreso than the 80s aesthetics.

There's no real combos in Bloodbourne short of mashing one of the attack buttons. Really if you go in expecting DMC style anything you may be a little disappointed, but then happy cause BB is real good.

This month is gonna murder me as I spread my attention 3 ways between Dragonball Xenoverse 2, Dragonball Fusions, and Pokemon. Which one will win? It is honestly a toss-up because I love Goku and Pikachu equally. Luckily I only barely interact with the Pokemon competitive community, so there's not a huge rush to finish it.

Yeah, I get that. The game's a bit bloated with control features. Unleashing gadgets while gliding seemed especially frivolous. The one thing that I kept getting caught up on until late in the game was being unsure how much stuff I could do. Because the game starts you off already equipped with certain skills and gadgets from previous games, but not all of them, and because I grew familiar with the stuff available in the upgrade menu, I would hold off on performing certain actions or try to perform them without unlocking them and that was frustrating when combos need every button press to be measured and sure. Playing as the other characters was the worst form of that. The game says "here, play as Azrael for a sec" and I'm like "ok... so what can he do? Oh, he has exactly the same equipment as Batman for some reason? But you gave me control of Nightwing and he's very different."

Bloodborne has basically my ideal "combo" system. Where combos are just that, sequences of regular actions flowing together, instead of entering a specific sequence of inputs in order to get a discrete unique output.

I don't need flashy finisher moves, just give me different attacks that have varying ranges, speed, directions, damage, etc. (even if it's just two or three) and let me string them together in the best way based on what's going on.

The end of the year is rough: Dishonored 2, Titanfall 2, Tyranny, Watch_Dogs 2, FFXV, The Last Guardian, Dead Rising 4, Owlboy. There are also a few titles released some time ago that I should think about getting like the new Deus Ex, Hitman, Civ 6 and Gears of War 4. I'll probably get like 2 games from this list. Decisions, decisions.
