That's the Zeta Plus C1 Hummingbird, probably one of my favorite suits ever. It's less Hi-Nu with Ex-S and more Zeta Plus (duh) with the Deep Striker. (Which of course was based off the Ex-S but that's neither here nor there)

Those aren't boosters, they're fuel tanks. Basically the thing was meant to escort the Deep Striker and as such, needed to be both incredibly fast to intercept stuff and to have enough fuel to have a large enough deployment radius. Considering that the Deep Striker was loaded down with as much fuel and guns that they could to make it an effective long range, extended deployment behind enemy lines unit, that's a lot of fuel it needs.

Oh, okay. Now they make sense.

Kind of surprised the Hummingbird isn't also loaded with hilarious amounts of guns in the event where Deep Striker runs out of ammo and can borrow something from the escort so it too has something to attack with.

Pretty much everything the Deep Striker has is powered by its reactor alone. Its reactor which outputs about 11x more power than the RX-78's and over 2x more power than the Ex-S's. They literally crammed a battleship reactor, main gun, and i-field into the thing, then strapped enough boosters to it to move it at ludicrous speed and then enough fuel to it to keep it working for weeks.

It's beautiful. :unsmith:

So the same school of thought as the Neue Ziel and stuff, "how many beam cannons and vernier thrusters can we fit on this thing? Then double that"

ACES CURE PLANES
Oct 21, 2010

Not quite that far, no. At least not for weaponry. It's got the standard Gundam vulcans, and two smaller beam cannons mounted to it, as well as some INCOMs (basically prototype funnels, guided by wires), and a slightly modified version of the Ex-S's gun to make it fire faster.

It's just that the battleship mega particle cannon and i-field are incredibly ludicrous for MS mounting. So what it lacks in number of weapons, it makes up for in having a giant fuckoff sniping cannon with ludicrous firepower and an insane shield.

They definitely strapped all the thrusters in the world to it though, so it can haul rear end despite being gigantic.

Edit: Transitioning away from robot stat nerdery (though it does still fit the theme of strapping ludicrous equipment to MSes), do we know yet if the Penelope will be in SRWV? I mean, I love the Xi too, but I'd die happy if both units were in the game. :swoon:

I think that's Ing+someone Twin spirit to go again after getting one squad down. Rai's accelerate also very useful. I think Ing+Rai is the go to pair for that one if its the one I'm thinking of.

You want to team up Ing and Rai. Rai can use Accelerate for the first turn. Ing can use his twin spirit for the second turn, which will grant both Accelerate and Assail, enabling your units to attack an enemy normally outside of its range. Then you can finish the enemy off with a counter during enemy phase. I found it worked well for me with the enemies closest on the far right.

Ryusei's summary of it as an orthodox super robot nails it. It's CompatiKaiser with less Obari once it upgrades.

Use NTLEA or something to run it in Japanese language mode, that fixed it for me.

Your game can't display the kanji, so the game is freezing up. Run it in JP locale like any other Japanese game.

Fun fact: When we tried translating the spirits for FMW3, this caused an even greater issue where all skills that autocast spirits froze the game because it was apparently looking for the japanese string instead of the spirit ID like any sane program would. :suicide:

Any tips for Alpha 3, or should I just do what I want because it isn't really too bad? Other than the 4 member squads being really annoying (I keep having a few of the useless ZZ kids die on me every other mission) I'm making pretty good headway, and I'm at stage 20 of the earth route.

The absolute best 'bang for your buck' in terms of upgrades is Strike Gundam which carries over to basically every single Gundam SEED unit. Just behind that is the Gaogaigar which also upgrades J-Ark, and the Moebius Zero which gets you both Skygraspers. Most protagonist units will upgrade some secret unit but they're less reliable than those.

GimmickMan
Dec 27, 2011

If you're playing real route male, the MP Nu's upgrades also carry over to the Werkbau, which carries over to the Wildfalken, which carries over to the Wildwurger.

You get all these units really early, so you can't take a lot of advantage from this but free money is free money.

Nah, I'm rolling with Kusuha since I was feeling like using a Super. Seems like I'll be fine, since I've been putting a fair chunk of cash into the Strike as well. I don't like Kira, but I like the Strike, drat it. Should I just squad reals together and supers with support bots, or does it really matter all that much? I just try to have it so there's an accel user in as many squads as I can like I did in Z.

Generally you want an accel user in every squad, EN and repair supportbots with EN hogging supers like Getter, Mazinkaiser and GaoGaiGar, and then just the strongest PLA units you can scrounge up. Barrier-users are also fantastic for super squads, Rei being chief among them. You may or may not want to keep Asuka and Shinji together for their combo attack, but you can just as easily shuffle them into the backrow of any unit for AT field goodness. You also want any combination attack partners in the same squad for obvious reasons, though Rei is a potential exception.

Protip: Amuro only needs Kayra in the least valuable MS you have, since the Nu's funnels will violate the poo poo out of anything and everything in the game. Also the Dendrobium is a beautiful thing for the entire early-mid game, and I recommend giving it to someone more capable than Kou, like the Purus.

GimmickMan
Dec 27, 2011

Its been many years since I played Alpha 3 but here's some of what I remember:

Most of the newtypes learn Awaken and make excellent squad fodder.

METEOR Freedom and METEOR Justice are a strong candidate for best non-Original reals in the game.

Ideon's IDE power goes up as enemies target it and gets a big bonus when under 10% HP. The IDE barrier will activate and protect it from most grunts once this happens, so you basically want it to be at 10% HP or under pretty much all the time. Give it HP upgrades but no evasion or armor, don't bother upgrading its weapons because the Ideon Sword and Ideon Gun already have 9999 base attack power. It loses IDE power when it destroys anything, so casting mercy is key to abusing its MAPWs.

Speaking of Ideon, the unit is deservedly famous for its ability to wipe the whole map at once, but one could argue that Banpreios can do the same thing with less setup work by spamming awaken and resupply on its MAPW.

The 3 Evas in Alpha 3 have a combination attack, and Shinji's leader bonus is strengthening all AT Fields in the squad, so you could also make an argument for slapping 2 Cost Downs on 00 and making a single all-Eva squad. The abundance of combination attacks, synergistic leader bonuses and decent spirit pools in most squad fodder units means that Alpha 3 is a game where you generally want units from the same series to be in the same squad.

Making sure everyone has a Repair/Resupply squaddie is nice but this is one of those games where you can clear stages in 2-3 turns by the 2nd half of the game so it is not as much of a big deal as it is in the grindier ones.

Per squad, I usually have something to kill bosses, another to bash mooks (sometimes they're the same unit) and then the rest is mostly there to cast spirits.

Once you get a certain unit you basically abuse its P Map a lot which means it probably doesn't matter if you don't super optimize your squads.

loving hell, I keep losing a ton of units on every chapter in SRWF. I'm wondering if I should just start over because I'm worried I'll end up not having nearly enough cash to keep moving forward.

Is it normal for bosses in this game to take like 250 damage from basically everything I throw at them? The mechanics in this game feel completely different from modern SRWs.
