I’m black.

I hope that this Trump mess turns out to just be total incompetence/inefficiency/gov’t shutdown, rather than dystopian 4th reich.

Maybe I’ll get trampled in a ration line riot/shot in the head and death will come quickly, and won’t be sent to Gitmo when DHS head David Clarke decides that black people (who aren't him) are sleeper agents of ISIS. :unsmith:

quote:

Let it be said at once: Trump’s victory is primarily due to the explosion in economic and geographic inequality in the United States over several decades and the inability of successive governments to deal with this.

The tragedy is that Trump’s program will only strengthen the trend towards inequality. He intends to abolish the health insurance laboriously granted to low-paid workers under Obama and to set the country on a headlong course into fiscal dumping, with a reduction from 35% to 15% in the rate of federal tax on corporation profits, whereas to date the United States had resisted this trend, already witnessed in Europe.

The main lesson for Europe and the world is clear: as a matter of urgency, globalization must be fundamentally re-oriented. The main challenges of our times are the rise in inequality and global warming. We must therefore implement international treaties enabling us to respond to these challenges and to promote a model for fair and sustainable development.

2. Reporting on the possibility of it happening puts subject on the defensive, as in order to deny it, they have to not do it. Even if we grant that Trump never actually wanted to give Kushner the clearance, the fact that he's now said he never wanted to, means he can't without going back on his word.

articles were written about the security clearance for family members as well, those same journalists tweeting are the authors of those articles

I agree with all of this except health care wasn't "laboriously granted to low-paid workers", they just passed a law that required them to buy it out of pocket. Pretty far cry from a a real plan like single payer.

Honestly, I think we have to stop hoping that it's going to be ok and start preparing for the worst. The election is over. Donald Trump won and is going to be president. From this point forward, all of the norms of the federal government are out the window. For me, out of all of his significant personality disorders, the one that scares me right now is the fact that the next President will be a person who lies with such impunity that we will literally not be able to believe a single thing he (or any of his staff) says.

I think he is likely to start making claims based on intelligence information which are completely untrue. Who is going to call him out on that?

For me, I have a multi part plan:
1. Give money to news organizations. So far, beyond my usual subscriptions, I've started subscribing to the Washington Post and the LA Times. Will probably add the NYT and ProPublicia to the mix as well.
2. Volunteer at organizations which defend the people most vulnerable to the Trump presidency.
3. #CalExit as a backup plan if poo poo really hits the fan.

The other thing I've been thinking about is a mass income tax revolt, but am not sure of the implications. What would happen to the federal government if 30-40% of the population didn't file or pay their taxes by April 15?

Capitalism would probably be fine if we were willing to hit a big loving RESET button on it every 100 years or so. Those interim years after its hit and before we get out poo poo back together unfortunately would just suck.

Good question, but in terms of funding the government: not a lot, I'd imagine. High-income earners and corps are required to pay their federal taxes quarterly, not annually iirc

It was called World War 2, and I don't think it's any coincidence that we're coming up a hundred years since and the pressure is getting incredible.

Thing is, the costs involved in the reset are way too high now with the invention of the atomic bomb - we can't afford a World War 3, and even if every nuke spontaneously disappeared and WW3 was fought conventionally, you've still got the impending collapse of the biosphere as a second hourglass whose sand is almost up.

But capitalism doesn't reward anyone for hard work, that's what seizing the means is for so you're stripping out the rear end in a top hat boss slurping up 80% of the revenue. Capitalism rewards people for selling at a markup and producing on the cheap. It's the outgrowth of an obsession with cottage industry in the face of an industrializing world and doesn't account for the way a basketweaver on a farm actually owned their own "factory" whereas textile mills straight up turned children into machinery. Having a steel mill owned by a workers collective doesn't preclude a loving market for steel, but it does protect the steel workers from being seen as a faceless cost to be minimized.
