Hey dummies, if you're seriously thinking about running a celebrity for president then Hollywood stars are dead on arrival. People loving hate Hollywood stars and their limousine liberal bullshit.

If you want a presidential celebrity who can appeal to the working class, then run an MMA fighter.

Run Jeff Monson.

I can see the ad now. A worker is being brow-beaten by their rear end in a top hat boss, who appears vaguely Trump-like. Suddenly Jeff Monson bursts through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man and puts the boss in a wicked submission hold.

I dunno just how much in bed he is with Putin, because he's still a member of the IWW, and he wants to join the Russian Communist Party.

Obsession with optics and image control are why half the country doesn't vote. Trump is not a unique figure who could only not have "reality" apply to him. The fact is that the social paradigm has shifted massively from the point decades ago, where respectability & decorum were the most important elements of public life. Being too cowardly to take a risk on figures that would actually resonate with the Democratic base, is why they lost the easiest election in history to the most hated presidential candidate ever.

The presidential candidate doesn't have to be a graffiti-spraying MMA anarchist, but it sure as Hell couldn't hurt any more than running a buttoned down upper class ghoul.

We don't really need an American Trudeau. Americans are fat and unhealthy. They'll relate more to a slob, or to the buffed out ring warriors they idolize.

I would laugh, but I remember what Saxby Chambliss did to Max Cleland in the GA Senate race--a man who lost both his legs and an arm diving on a grenade to save his squadmates. I would not put it past Trump to turn Tammy Duckworth into a military-hating coward.

And is Ellison official? I thought that was just a Bernie "sign this petition" thing.

No one seems to agree on the real reason for what happened this cycle.

Only thing I can see is that no one loving showed up. 54% participation in a Presidential year is abysmal. That still doesn't explain the multitude of state polling in places like Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida that consistently showed Hillary ahead.

You need to have something to vote for, not something to vote against. Not many people were very excited for Hillary in key areas.
As far as the polls, I think people were just embarrassed to admit they were voting Trump.

Was it this or was it just that his people turned out and Hillary's didn't? Again, 54% turnout is loving godawful, and low turnout pretty much ensures Republicans win every time. It would be more comforting, somehow, to know that "bigger turnout = better for Democrats" still holds true.

If it is the other thing, then how does this not render state polling useless from here on out? No one will trust it, period.

I got really pissed off when listening to the 538 podcast because they're so insistent that it was just typical polling error, if being off by 5-6 points in several key states is really typical polling error then polls aren't very useful anymore.

Raw votes are up vs 2012 and there's still like 3.5 million votes left in California. It wasn't a turnout thing.

Basically the polling error in the states is attributed to a late break in undecideds going Trump. It's probably a combination of a few things:

1) Undecideds were always embarrassed Trump voters or more likely to break Trump (white males)
2) A bunch of Republican Johnson voters came home (less than 5% third party vote in swing states)
3) Something happened late in the race to convince people to go Trump (combination of Trump shutting the gently caress up and Comey stuff)

And then it's a difference of polling missing a late shift / perhaps missing the electorate makeup

I suspect from now on, any kind of campaign ending "grab by them pussy" caliber oppo drops from now will be less than a week before election day.

Trump managed to not say anything too loving dumb for at least a solid week before the election and that helped alot of on-the-fence republicans come around to him.

It's kind of crazy to claim it wasn't a turnout thing because one area that you already had locked up voted for you even more overwhelmingly than they did in the past, while you lost regions that were formerly safe because the number of people willing to vote for you demonstrably fell. That's 100% a turnout thing, and all that running up the score in California accomplishes is giving lazy pundits fuel for quadrennial "abolish the electoral college" thinkpieces and making your base on the coast look out of touch with the parts of the country where support has collapsed.

Yeah. It gives me hope that maybe a candidate not named Hillary Clinton who runs even a semi-competent campaign could beat Trump in 2020.

Seriously, for the entire political season, I kept thinking "We nominated the ONE person in the world who could gently caress this up somehow."

Also as trashy as Trump was for bringing in Bill's sexual assault accusers in the wake of it (because Trump is not the person to attack anyone on this poo poo), it's possible that it worked in making it clear that Clinton isn't such a person either.
