I was only there for 5 days, but I couldn't find any good food around Detroit when I visited.

Suspect Bucket posted:Hello yes I have my seasonal "The Cool Weather Is Here Your Sinuses Hate You" attack. What's a nice spicy soup I can make? I'm looking for something a bit different from my ghetto pho spicy broth, which is just strong stock, onion, and allspice, anise, ginger, garlic, and hot peppers, then I dump it over a bowl of spinach and add noodles, sesame oil, and chili oil if it needs it. I love it, but i'm looking for something new. Is there a horseradish or wasabi soup maybe? korean soups. I came down with the flu this last weekend, and ate a non-stop assault of the most blisteringly hot, kimchi + fermented bean paste laced, kelpy seafoody beef brothy korean soups I could find. I still have the flu. but at least I ate some tasty soup eh

I appreciate the kimchee recommendations, but as I don't generally like kimchee, don't have any in the house, the only place that sells any kimchee is a half hour drive away, and there are no korean places in delivery range, I don't think it's in the cards for now. But now I'm craving Pizza Soup, which is one of the more terribly american things I eat. Tomato soup with a bit of pepperoni, a big garlic bread and mozzarella cheese crouton on top. Oh, and I have tins of good quality clams and sardines, maybe i'll make a spicy fish chowder.

So... am I going nuts or did Morton Kosher Salt change the size of their granules? I swear they feel different.

30 Goddamned Dicks posted:So... am I going nuts or did Morton Kosher Salt change the size of their granules? I swear they feel different. I bought a box recently and noticed that the granules seemed larger than usual. Made me wonder if the boxes always specified 'coarse' or not - I don't see any non-coarse for sale, so I also wondered if I was nuts

Mine seems the same. You're both weird.

Maybe the boxes have varied grain sizes and the smaller ones sort to the bottom over time, so you use the small ones last. Then you get a new box and all you see is the larger grains again. Or maybe the granule sizes did change but it's just an artifact/anomaly associated with our universe's quiet quantum shift onto the trump-president spacetimeline.

I'm really liking Jacques Pépin's fast food stuff on youtube and I wanted to share him "poaching" an egg by deep-fry. It's pretty cool but I'm sure I'd have some horror come out of my pan if I tried. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysm-LEEb_K4&t=285s Gonna have to try.

Having a train wreck "Thanksgiving Potluck" with my work folk tonight. Here is the Google doc list so far: Brownies Spanish tortilla Rice Krispie Treats Galician Pie (Empanada Gallega) Guac and chips Spicy Chili Not sure yet Banana Bread Sausage and Peppers Not sure yet Cupcakes Cookies Beer Based on the names, I think there are only going to be about 6 home made dishes.

Squashy Nipples posted:Having a train wreck "Thanksgiving Potluck" with my work folk tonight. "Only." Back when I worked in a potluck-heavy office, there was maybe one other person who did something homemade. All 30ish other people in the office just went to Costco or a random grocery store for some rotisserie chicken or mediocre pizza or a huge tray of subpar cookies. If you get six homemade things I'd call that a wildly successful potluck.

Mealy apples still taste good even if the texture is horrible, so make some sauce or juice or something

The Midniter posted:Went out to dinner tonight with my boss while we're both here in Detroit for work. Hit up a New Orleans style restaurant whose menu looked good. [...] What a letdown. I have a very strong suspicion that I know where you went, and I'm sorry to say that you got exactly what you were intended to get. The joint I think you went to is not really known for its quality so much as its stability in terms of serving mediocre poo poo for a long time. Steve Yun posted:I was only there for 5 days, but I couldn't find any good food around Detroit when I visited. Y'all didn't look very hard. We are the land of coney islands and lovely dives, but that's because we're a largely blue collar area with not a lot of concentration of fine dining types, so there's not been a whole lot of successful fine dining until recently. Greektown still boasts a couple better places, the Cass Corridor has a burgeoning group of good restaurants with a variety of dishes. Eastern Market is becoming a cluster of restaurants bit by bit... there's a lot of areas of development inside the city itself, not to mention the near suburbs. I have a rather long list of places to check out in the near future, and I don't even work shifts that keep me home any more... I'm a lifelong Detroiter so this is obviously near and dear to me, and I want more folks to come to my city and eat well while they're here. Maybe I should make an post? I feel like I've seen a few asks about Detroit lately.

I got the chicken jambalaya and it was suuuuuper disappointing. I'm in love with andouille and if I did a blind taste test, I would have bet that what they served was a chopped up hot dog. No spice, and springy as a mofo. The peppers and onions were cooked to within an inch of their lives, and the rice was mushy. I hate to break it to you but this place's menu did not in fact look good.
