Likewise the notion that manual labor could be obsolete scares people who were brainwashed to believe that their personal worth is tied to their work and not their inherent humanity. And his lying isn't even the worst part. This is: http://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/donald-trumps-first-alarming-week-as-president-elect quote:Later that evening, Trump’s interview with “60 Minutes,” recorded on Friday, aired, which my colleague Amy Davidson covered. The most worrying aspect of his interview may have been his hint that the Justice Department, the part of the federal government that, in the hands of an unscrupulous White House, has enormous potential for abuse, was a tool of the President. “I don’t want to hurt them. I don’t want to hurt them,” Trump said, when asked if he still wanted a special prosecutor to reopen the case of Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information. “They’re, they’re good people. I don’t want to hurt them. And I will give you a very, very good and definitive answer the next time we do ‘60 Minutes’ together.” There was no appeal to the rule of law. Instead, Trump talked the way an autocrat talks and suggested that the Justice Department was simply a tool to be used against opponents, unless he felt like sparing them based on his mood and if he believes his potential targets are “good people.” This is terrifying.

I'm kind of surprised that the worker rights abuses and employing people for minimum wage with no benefits stuff that is going on at Trump casinos were never brought up during the election. No one really seemed to give a poo poo about the for-profit Trump University scam either where people were literally swindled out of thousands of dollars for bullshit certificates of completion basically stating: "Congratulations on paying $30k-80k for watching 2005 era production quality youtube videos. Here's a piece of paper and a lapel pin!". I thought the fact that Trump has not payed taxes for 18 years due to incurring almost a BILLION dollars of debt and refusing to release his tax returns would make it crystal clear to voters that he is a complete fuckup that is out to just to screw over as many people as possible, that this is morally wrong, and makes for a BAD president. Instead, voters actually embraced his exploitation of the tax code because I guess being a complete rear end in a top hat with no regard for the human condition and getting away with it is now seen as a very positive personality trait in US society. It reminds me of the real reasons why people wait in the cold for days on end for Black Friday deals at Best Buy/Target/whatever. It's not because any of the deals are actually decent, that the opportunity cost is apparently worth waiting 5 days outside for a $300 poo poo off brand TV, or that it's the only time of the year stuff is on sale. It's because people love the feeling of coming out on top of another person/institution. That's in spite of the fact that the deal is all smoke and mirrors and the real winner is the other party. Being and exploitative gently caress is now seen as "savvy" rather than "criminal". That's what really scares me. A whole generation of kids are going to grow up thinking that it is morally right to extract as much resources as possible out of your fellow man and kick em to the curb rather than working together to help create a better world for everyone. That it is "bad" to give a poo poo about other people because doing so means you may get less stuff and are therefore a lazy poor. And don't forget, poor people are TERRORISTS Edit: I first really noticed this shift in behavior when the Wolf of Wall Street movie came out. I remember seeing it at a premiere and there were people literally clapping and cheering at the end of the film. Not because the movie is really loving funny, but because Jordan Belfordt ruined the lives of thousands of vulnerable people, profited immensely off it, and basically got away with it. Everyone's mistake has been thinking that the rural white voter wants things to improve for themselves, when what they really want is for everyone to suffer. They're just a vindictive and cruel lot. It doesn't even matter that they themselves will suffer, as long as the people they dislike (minorities, city folk, elites, etc.) suffer more. They're like accelerationists, but without the hope that things will magically get better later.

I mean Americans have always been propagandized to worship wealth and the rich. Trump benefited from coming into the race with this already being his shtick, and unlike Mitt Romney he had no shame or desire to back down from the dumb poo poo he said. Whereas Hillary had to plow through the double whammy of being a rich white liberal (hypocracy perception) combined with being a woman with a known past (double standards, conspiracy theories and anti-globalization reaching a fever pitch). In retrospect I bet if they'd stayed on message and aggressively campaigned in states with competitive Senate seats they could've won. But the sheer incompetence and arrogance of her top level campaign staff meant she was probably doomed as soon as those polls showing huge leads came out and they went for the risky landslide instead of the easy safe win. At this point I'm more worried about Trump and his Republican toadies skull loving the country beyond repair and the progresssive left buying into this myth that neoliberals created globalization from the ether, rather than merely accelerating and mismanaging it, so we double down on the dumb "bringing the factories back" narrative and then get slapped by the electorate when we inevitably can't deliver.

Don't discard the past and then act like one of the oldest class struggles in the book, universal income at the hands of capitalist automation, is some new thing. Thomas Paine, one of the only US founding fathers that wasn't a sack of poo poo, wrote about it in 1797 in Agrarian justice: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~hyper/Paine/agrarian.html quote:"It is a position not to be controverted that the earth, in its natural, cultivated state was, and ever would have continued to be, the common property of the human race. In that state every man would have been born to property. He would have been a joint life proprietor with rest in the property of the soil, and in all its natural productions, vegetable and animal." In 1797, the word for Automation was Cultivation, but the sentiment is the same, this income is due because land in its original state has its value distinct from land in its cultivated state, and every person has a right to the value of land in its original state. quote:"Nothing could be more unjust than agrarian law in a country improved by cultivation; for though every man, as an inhabitant of the earth, is a joint proprietor of it in its natural state, it does not follow that he is a joint proprietor of cultivated earth. The additional value made by cultivation, after the system was admitted, became the property of those who did it, or who inherited it from them, or who purchased it. It had originally no owner. While, therefore, I advocate the right, and interest myself in the hard case of all those who have been thrown out of their natural inheritance by the introduction of the system of landed property, I equally defend the right of the possessor to the part which is his."

Globalization. Globalism is the alt-right dogwhistle for Jewish people. That is a much more interesting problem that we put off fixing for much too long. I don't think the US has the unilateral power to do much about it though even if we really wanted to. I suspect global warming will have to be swallowing cities before anyone bothers to react to it. By then it'll be too late. Edit: ^ the thing about the exploitation of the global poor is that all of our leverage to do anything about it ironically lays in trade deals. We can't really force countries to adopt better labor and environmental standards at gun point (or at least I hope we see why that's a stupid idea) but we can make it a condition of trading with the lucrative American market and then enforce it with our economic leverage. Unfortunately nobody is pushing really hard for that, or is likely to. Lightning Knight fucked around with this message at 11:21 on Nov 18, 2016 |

Problem is it would hinge on getting people to care about people outside of this country, and we don't really have caring about people inside this country down well either.
