Yeah, you would think it's made for being sold as story modules with a cheapish boardgame intro box then just keep expanding out.

But again, Kingdom Death get praised for literally canceling an expansion because it would be too hard to do while Hawk Wargames gets blasted for not shipping fast enough.

The first Shadows of Brimstone Kickstarter did insane numbers and FFP ended up giving way too much out free and ate a loss it sounds like so this time around they're being more conservative and people are pissed that they aren't getting enough free stuff.

At least none of those are "save or die." The game is overly fond of those since it's grim and dark. Aside from stuff like genital mutilation and armor that eventually turns you into a monster (also includes genital mutilation)

But anyway, I just keep hearing how it is some compelling narrative experience that unfolds over many hours and isn't just about tits. Anyone watch the lets play on Beasts of War? The guy running it is only slightly goth/emo and the titties are downplayed/carefully navigated around throughout. I actually want to see more and find out how far down the rabbithole they go.

The art is really anime, and you get frequent mention of genitals or something, but it's more about "bad stuff happens and you lose" kinda struggle. It's dwarf fortress for the edgy grimdark kid crowd. Like you have to reprecussions of murder becoming the culture of your survivor group.

The game itself I'd say is more about being brooding, dark, "the world hates you/people are poo poo" stuff like Genocyber with some wanking on the side. Too depressing for me. Speaking of wanking miniatures, I can't afford to get the Made-to-Order diaznettes this evening. I think it's the apex of both sexy miniatures and Slaanesh design.

KD feels like someone read Berserk and really really missed the entire point of the extreme body horror/sexuality stuff in Berserk. Like, Berserk is a great comic, it's probably the closest a comic book (and I mean comics in general, not manga as a subset) will ever come to something like Moby Dick, but all the HR Giger style TnA in it is there for a specific reason. You're supposed to feel supremely uncomfortable when viewing it, it's there to communicate the brutal inhuman horrors of a world that's falling apart in the wake of an attack by demons crossed with the end of the Crusades and the black death. It's kind of like the nurses in Silent Hill, they're supposed to make you feel a little bit turned on but then also feel disgusted at yourself for feeling that way, a deliberate perversion and twisting of sexual tropes if you will. Kingdom Death looks at all these things and what it takes away is "dark fantasy where people are desperately trying to survive against insurmountable odds is way cooler if WE GOT DEM TITTTTTTTAYYYYYYYYZZZZZZ!"

I watched Berserk for the first time a couple weeks ago (the old anime, not the new one). How everything builds up to this one cataclysmic event, the whole character development, it still blows my mind. Really, I was blown away. (that's also saying something because artstyle-wise the anime isn't that great)

Having played it, I'd say KD: Monster game feature a game with the best and worst of game design. I'd prefer to heavily house rule it before doing another campaign, and I'd probably thoroughly enjoy it. People aren't kidding about the save or die, it feels like you'd need to pass a number of those to finish the game- where randomness may have more power than player agency/decision making. And yeah, it does have the best and worst, tonally it goes from grim darkness, to weird boner pills, stabbing a lion's balls off (then making an axe half out of those balls), poop eating, stuff like this. But $400 is too much. It is possible it could cut into Shadows of Brimstone, because nerds have no idea how much money they'll need to spend to spend on KD, so budgeting can't really occur. All complaints about its pricing come from post kickstarter. Their kickstarter prices were actually great value, but so much now cost 4x as much.
