IIRC that guy made some posts in Reddit about how the house/property thing was somehow a scam where his inlaws sucked him dry. Which sounds pretty horrid because then they'd be loving over their own daughter too, which is just like holy crap

I feel like I live in bizarro China when I read this thread. My girlfriends parents live the other side of the country and we see them a few days a year for spring festival, they don't care about whether she is married or anything as they already have grand kids from her siblings and they want to buy a house for her but she won't let them since she wants to make her own money honestly.

The advice to not get married to the first girl who smiles at you goes a long way really, yet many seem to ignore it. That being said, I wish my in-laws were nicer, but at least my wife sides with me against them, so it's not all bad.

Same culture, families from same part of Mexico. And still, when we started living together, the differences between us in how we thought about family and our parents were GIANT. Because her parents are not from here, and my parents are 1st-2nd generation Americans. I can't imagine going to a foreign country and marrying someone with a culture so incredibly different. Once that mother in law came in to the shot, I started chortling hard at this goofus.

Fojar38 posted:Is there a reason to stuff the computer into an ugly case on wheels instead of just using the computer What that article doesn't appear to mention is that the "robot" just has voice chat software linked to somewhere in the Philippines. "But Engkey’s voice is not its own. It is connected via teleconference to the Philippines, where a teacher conducts the class through a monitor. An image of a Caucasian woman appears on Engkey’s LCD panel head, although she is not the teacher in the Philippines. " http://www.voanews.com/a/south-korean-students-learn-english-from-robot-teacher-117640783/167151.html The main selling point of these is that schools could hire Filipino teachers, but throw in some digital paleface-tech. It's better to let children think they are talking to a caucasian robot than an actual, highly qualified person who happens to be in the Philippines because only white people speak English you know. This was also a budget cutting measure so Korean schools could justify getting rid of relatively unskilled "native speakers" and replace them with robots. You might be wondering "why don't they just hire those highly qualified Filipino teachers instead of the aimless college graduates?" Well, you're only legally allowed to import English teachers that are citizens of certain countries! So, this was both a legal loophole and some freaky racist white washing.

I thought the same for awhile too (and I WAS one of those shitheads!), but from what I've heard the robots never became a huge presence either. Seems like it was just a convenient excuse to cut an extraneous part of the budget and then forget about the whole thing. English schools in the Philippines are making a ton of money off of rich kids whose parents want an immersive study environment, though, so it all worked out in the end.

Outrail posted:On the other hand it let's qualified people teach English instead of washed up white shitheads. So it's racism counteracts other racism so it's kind of okay? If you scan through job listings for English teaching it won't take you long to run across multiple ads that state "NO PHILLIPINOS." The biggest reason they don't get hired is that students won't pay for classes with a Filipino teacher, which is due to really disgusting 1850s style racism against Filipinos in most of East Asia. However it should be said that most of the people running English schools have pretty poor English overall and can't tell when their teachers have accents that make them a poor model for students. In any case a demand for "qualified" teachers is almost never met with pay for qualified people, so the outrage over dumb university dropouts filling these spots is a little hollow when the compensation offered by these schools is worse even than public school work back home, that is not even considering the absent pension plan (many US teachers only earn about 1.5 million in their lifetime, their pension however is worth about 2 million in the fiscal value it provides, so no pension is worse than halving pay), expense and difficulty of moving there, the near necessity of learning a likely otherwise useless language to have any kind of real life, etc. The few places that do pay something like real money to compensate for the difficulties of getting experienced labor to move around the world for a temp position (Saudi and Kuwait and that's about it really) get to pick and choose from actual candidates, despite living in some of the most miserable places on earth for the duration of the contract.

Man, I know disliking or even hating foreigners is a pretty much universal concept, but I feel like East Asia takes it to another level. They like the idea of their children learning to speak English at a functional level, but they HATE the idea of having to actually interact with real life foreigners! The whole point of bringing white people over to dance and sing with your kids is so they can actually get experience interacting with a foreigner and not devolve into babbling fits as if being confronted with a Martian! Hrm... what's a good solution to having to interact with this icky foreigners? I know! We'll replace them with a stupid ball robot that looks so ridiculous, kids won't be able to concentrate on actually speaking English! We'll slap a white face on it and no one will know the difference! Maybe they could try the Filipino approach and think of English as an actual means of communication rather than "how to talk to foreigners?"
