mark blyth has been pretty prescient about the rise of the far right in the US and Europe and has been pretty accurate in predicting trump and brexit. heres one of his more recent talks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd2d4_LcEig

I've got this video in my "to watch" bookmarks folder so welp, guess I know how the rest of my evening is going to be spent.

Part of me flips between "AAAAAARGHffsjdfksdjfskjdfhsjkdfh" and "lol a facist is taking over the most powerful nation in the world and Americans are seemingly doing nothing to stop it. This'll be "interesting""

poo poo is accelerating into happening. I think this is a by-product of the fact that since the world wars - the big ones last century I mean - people have been living in a relatively peaceful world because all of last century there were people alive that had experienced what it's like if you let forces like these get so strong they threaten everything. After the ones that lived through it died, their children came into power and still remembered childhood memories of cowering in cellars hoping your building didn't get a direct hit, or had similar stories their parents told them to caution them. Then, a generation later, the people in power only had stories their grandparents or great-grandparents told them about the war, so it became an abstract thing. Now, there is pretty much nobody still alive that lived through the war and those that did are literally on their deathbeds after having defied life expectancy levels. There is no-one left in power in the developed world that has a true grasp on how bad things can get anymore, so they sit and push past limits, break conventions, discard common standards of how to conduct yourself as a person with real power, without realising the very reasons such limits and standards were established in the first place.

The thing that was researched and invented that ended the war last time because it was so awesomely destructive will be the thing that kicks off the war this time round, because it is so awesomely destructive, and they will launch to naive cheers. Afterwards, there will be hardly anyone left to re-learn the lessons our great-grandparents learned first-hand. We've demonstrably not learned from history and we will repeat it as a result, only this time we will do so with 21st century tech. If it isn't Trump that starts the next Big War, it'll be someone else in a decade or two's time. Anyone thinking of replying with "there's no way WW3 will happen" ought to remember what got illuminated the last time we tried filtering "there's no way" predictions in threads gone by.

True. Climate change and rising sea levels are unavoidable. It's just a matter of time, likely catastrophic change within the next 10-15 years.

Yeah, I mean there are basically two possible catastrophic failure states for the Trump administration, on top of the baseline level of incompetent corruption. The first is them accelersting climate change and not doing anything to stop it, which is already happening and what we should focus on. The second is way more hypothetical, and amounts to "Russia invades a Baltic state and NATO/Western Europe collapses." We can't do poo poo about that until it happens, really.

It's fine to be very concerned about climate change, it's not fine to make up alarmist bullshit like this which is not supported by any current models and which amounts to crying wolf. There will not be catastrophic changes in the next decade. Not even RCP 8.5 supports that.

This is in a way the most hosed up kind of good news. Yes I'll be sad that we're going to see a lot of people die, but it'll put Trump's fascism to a screeching halt. Trump's tough guy image will melt with his base the second the US tries this. Imagine if Hitler got routed trying to invade Poland. At least the Iran deal is more than just the U.S. and Iran. If Trump rips it up, the deal could still continue.

A lot harder to make the argument for Iran invasion if the other major powers are aligned against you.

The Bush Admin still felt the need to form a coalition of the willing for the Iraq invasion.

I'd say there's still a question as to whether or not someone will actually put the money where their mouth is, especially for an actual big ol' U.S. war, but the plausibility levels are way way way too high for comfort (especially for Iran if the nuclear deal goes out the window; Israel will probably ask Huckabee himself to hit the nuke launch button).

All that does is skip to the end. Remember the whole reason global warming is bad isn't the rising sea levels or massive societal disruption. Those are just the prologue. The problem is that it will eventually trigger a global ice age and mass extinction event.

Does Iran have the capability to damage an aircraft carrier?

I was under the impression you would need another Air Force similar in capability to the U.S. or anti-ship ballistic missles similar to what China was making.

Jokes about dying in a foxhole outside of Ahvaz aside, I'm very skeptical of the idea that any "war" with Iran would involve actual ground troops, as opposed to just a general campaign of aerial and missile bombardments of their infrastructure in some sort of misguided boondoggle effort to remove their capacity to make nukes/export terror. Basically what we did to Iraq in the 90s, but a lot more intense.

Trump can't possibly imagine a war without his triumphant soldiers marching into Tehranistan or whatever and ripping down statues. That's not to say that just because we do a missile/airstrike war that Iran doesn't play hard ball and say annex Shia Iraq and it's oil fields, or launch retaliatory strikes in the neighborhood.

Iran has their own line of anti ship cruise missiles. Launch 80 of them at an aircraft carrier that's in a narrow gulf with enemy territory running its entire length and my money is on the missiles.
