Ascended a Vampire Earth Elementalist! (A Nemelex Choice combo too!) With the changes to Petrify allowing max damage stabs, EE might be a better background for stabbers than En... you get access to Passwall and Petrify for landing stabs, and Sandblast/Stone Arrow/LRD for killing unhexable things, and it gives you the early XP to branch into stuff like Iron Shot!!code:

Idea to make Ignacio more threatening: Make him guaranteed to show up on a random floor occupied by the named Pan Lords. That way he has chance of showing up in an area where you can't just ignore him so easily. Of course most players will probably still just stomp him since its extended and he's not that strong.

I lost a great run to Ignacio back when Xom could swap your weapons with enemies; Xom gave me Ignacio's cursed +7 exec axe of pain, and gave him my +9 triple sword of freezing He then decided that wasn't funny enough and confused Ignacio, where he drowned in lava with my sword Mystery Prize fucked around with this message at 06:03 on Nov 20, 2016 |

Looks like Trog was pleased with me returning to the ways of the MiBe. He just gifted me Frostbite. Actually, a sanity check before I get cocky: CAO is great BTW I feel like my best option is to keep sitting on Fighting for a while, maybe go gently caress up Spider with my Broad Axe + Tower Shield to start reflecting orbs? Ideally, before I hit the bottom floor of anything important, I wanna get my evoke failrate on my cloak as low as is practical. Hopefully, it should make Shoals less of a deathtrap. Also, there's a crystal plate in an antique shop in D8 that I am still about $500 short of getting, and I'd like to pick that up if I can. Maybe Elf 1 and 2? Wouldn't mind a flaming executioner's axe. Edit: Found a desolation in Elf:2, cautiously attempted it, but the Frostbite noise drew too much attention at once without any way to funnel enemies, so I jumped back out through the portal rather than risk losing over a portal I went into on a whim. Edit2: Temporarily using a broad of prot and tower and going into Shoals with 53 AC, and 25 SH with reflection. I am the immovable object. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 10:50 on Nov 20, 2016 |

Give Ignacios' axe the same property as the scepter of torment instead of a pain brand. Even after the change to rN pain is a pretty weak and unimpressive brand at that point, for both Ignacio and as a reward for the player. It would make him a much cooler encounter instead of being a regular executioner with extra hp. It'd also be nice if his spawn rate was a little better, he's on the same tier as Murray and Tiamat for elusive uniques. Alternative idea, make him a potential choice as pan lord for demonic rune vaults. He'd probably need bigger stats in that case but it would be neat.

Done for the tournament, with 3 wins and a 12-rune splat. Our team played all random characters, which was great fun but not for every time - it makes it too hard to get good streaks, and basically impossible to get nchoices. In addition to that one I had a lot of splats of winnable characters, including this last attempt at a 2-streak: an MfSu of Kiku that went into shoals looking for a dtrident to brand. Some merfolks hit me down to 3hp, so I blinked away and then tried to walk to nearest stairs near unexplored territory and got promptly killed by a tomahawk. After so many good plays dealing with earlier troubles, it just takes one slipup. Shouldn't crawl when sleepy but there wasn't much time left to finish. https://crawl.jorgrun.rocks/morgue/hyperrchandra/morgue-hyperrchandra-20161120-102930.txt (yes, I died with acq. the plan was to use it on weapon if I had to flee Shoals, or gold if not as there were a lot of random useful things to buy. better would have been to just get gold, the weapon situation was OK enough and Shoals basically always has dtridents).

Right under the buzzer!code:
Got the cloak early enough that I was able to put 10 ranks into evocations and park it at a pretty respectable ~15% failure chance all game. (This also made the evocable blink from the gloves instantly 1%, which was nice.) I got cocky and almost died so many times, but the ones that stick out the most were: - In Abyss (because gently caress V:5 right in its ambush) when I got boxed in and brainless from malmute, so I had to wand myself and I was chugging anything I had out of desperation in order to survive long enough for it to go off. - Depths 3, two juggernauts cornered me. That was fun, entirely my own fault. - Zot 5, not even in the lungs, tabbed into two ancient liches without Trog's Hand up (whoops), had to blow a lot of resources I'd been saving for the run in order to survive. - It wasn't nearly as close as the others, but when I took my detour to spitekill Sigmund, I ended up getting attacked by a pan lord (and then chugging might and haste and flattening him because yolo). I'm very, very happy with how the game went in general. Went well, but not so well that I feel guilty about not going for more runes. (Didn't even find rCorr until Zot I think.)

Thanks to everyone who played for team Nemelex' Fan Club & Casino! The team gimmick was to only play Nemelex' Choice characters. The goals for the team, which of there were none, were met with flying colors! All team members managed to get the first level of Nemelex' Choice banner (get to level 9). I, as the team captain, managed the second level banner (got a rune). MVP goes to dpeg, who brought two glorious orbs for the team: an Octopode Warper of Gozag, and a Formicid Conjurer of Vehumet! This also got him the 3rd level banner! Wow! The following Nemelex' Choices were available, I've commented the ones I played: OpWr //At least the first one wasn't a mummy or a splatcat. Octopodes are fine if you get a ring of protection early on. HEAr, KoIE, DDAE, CeVM, HOWz, GrEn, GhCj // Ghoul is a good race. I dropped the nerd book and went with unarmed combat. I had the best run of the tournament when I landed Jivya from a faded altar. Then Sonja abyssed me with a distortion dagger and I got owned by trashing horrors. FeAK, VSSu, DEHu, VpAK, HaSu, TeAM, SpMo, FoCj // An interesting mix, and I appreciate Searing Ray a lot more than I used to. Digging into a wall and chain casting Searing Ray gets you out of a considerable amount of trouble. Even more if you're worshipping Sif Muna and get free casts. MfEE, TrVM, DDSk, HaFE, VSAM, HOTm, GhBe // Trog is pretty good even when you can't berserk and go unarmed. SpAE, DECK // This was a very bad dark time. Worshipping xom isn't as bad as it used to be, but with a race that has a weak start and needs a focused build, it's miserable. DDIE, TeAK // Lugonu's abyssing power is dumb good, and even with a Tengu I should have made it work. Best attempt still ended at lair because I chose to die instead of using the dumb good power. VpEE, FoNe // Last chance, and I had a good one going. Starting and managing a good Death Channel horde takes concentration though, and being drunk and under a time pressure didn't help. KoTm I hope the Nemelex' Choice only team becomes a forums tradition, like the Ogrecoming team. If anyone wants to do this dumb gimmick in the next tournament as well, the following players will have reserved seats for sticking with it until the end: StoryTime, Grimm and dpeg. Knocked 6 races off of greatplayer, 5 backgrounds off of greaterplayer, and 4 gods off of whatever the equivalent for religions is TeAE^Veh AE does a lot for your early game survivability, even if it falls off around Lair due to the unreliability of lightning bolt. Fortunately Te have no trouble branching into other conjuration schools as long as they can get the spells. DgGl Not quire as awful as mummies, but still pretty awful. Most races tend to even out lategame as you start playing to their strengths. With Dg you feel the -1 apts and no god abilities more and more and the slightly increased stats less and less. HOMo^Beo A race with +3 axes, +2 fighting, and +1 armour doesn't need an irresistible smite and the ability to fill the entire screen with orcs. KoWz^Sif New Sif is actually a pretty solid competitor with Vehumet. I'd actually rank them higher for 3-rune games. For postgame it's something of a tossup. Sif's channeling doesn't match Vehumet's magic return when fighting crowds but is much better at dealing with single targets like Hell lords. OpIE^Che IE is a much stronger start than Tm. You've got freeze to substitute while you're building up UC and Ozucubu's Armour to make you less squishy, while the starting Tm spells are usable at best. For spellcasters/transmuters I wouldn't rank octopode as more difficult than average--you're just trading body slots for ring slots. They're certainly better than demigods, who are going to be awful no matter how you build them. TrBe^Tro Somehow the first and only TrBe win of the tournament

I splatted that VSAm of Gozag that had been doing so well. My killing power vs rElec enemies just wasn't very good, although the Arc Blade tore through the game pretty easily up until that point. There went my chance at a tournament win. Either Crawl has gotten harder or I'm actually getting worse at it.

Sorry Nemelex Fan team for never really going nose to the grindstone on this. I never picked up the inertia for more than spurts of runs. While I was mostly successful in at least hitting Lair in the combinations I chose I usually ended up making some stupid "Oh I can survive this next hit..welp" choice no matter how many times the game gave me some awesome floor items to compensate. Lurked the Discord a lot though, had fun with the crew there. Faded altars are my "eat the purple" weakness.

So I lost a Centaur Berserker who had The Amulet of Four Winds and crystal plate armor of cold resist and artifact rings covering every other resist + tons of strength and dex because I forgot that hornets paralyze during my time off. I thought they just inflicted slow and then I was dead. I even slowed down my o-tabbing because a portion of my brain remembered that hornets were bad even if nothing else was a threat. Ugh. I also thought my rPois made me safe against the slow/paralyze?

Wasps and hornets used to be separate monsters, with wasps only slowing you while hornets paralyzed. They got merged together so hornets show up where wasps used to. Their paralysis is kind of bullshit for how early you can run into it now. That said I think rPois does render you immune to it. You sure you had it?

rPois used to reduce it by one level when they were seperate (paralyze to slowing and slowing to nothing) but now I think it might just give you an extra % chance to resist.

What the *heck* is with this Council of Iron god in cbro's experimental branch? I tried it and it generates a bunch of flying weapons, lets you swap to them by moving into them (and gives you crosstraining so that all your weapon skills are almost equal), and lets you fling them at people. Not clear if it depends on invocation. It's supposed to let you 'attack pressure points while you move' but that didn't seem to show up in the ability screen.

The pressure points thing is, I believe, a chance to slow/paralyze an enemy when you attack them. Once you get into the way the martial proficiency stuff works it's a hell of a lot of fun to play, actually.
