The entire point of my first post about this was that I don't know what the solution is, at least not in this political climate. You were clearly too butthurt at my failure to add "calloused hands" to the list of things all Americans should reflexively worship to comprehend what I was actually saying.

For the record, some form of UBI is probably the best thing we could do for people in that situation so their kids at least won't go hungry and will have a roof to study under, but it takes some rosy loving assumptions for that to even work in theory.

Democrats have been working on enticing back plants to the Detroit area, with some success, but if you could wave a magic wand for full employment, they would have done so. There's no secret up their sleeve.

Honestly, those days weren't all they were cracked up to be for everyone. Not every town had a huge supply of sweet jobs at an auto parts works. There were plenty of ghost towns even back then. Mostly ex-agricultural towns grappling with the fact that the work of 30 farm hands was now done by a guy, a dog, and a mechanical harvester. Those jobs *never* came back, and any politicians claiming at the time they could bring them back would have been liars.

Ultimately, I think it is just best to include more people. We don't have to exclude people to do that. White people? They have plenty of common problems with minorities, since the majority of white people are not rich. White men? Similar to white people in general, they share a lot of common problems with people. You know what isn't a problem they have? Minorities. Democrats, socialists or anyone else like that which they only think are a problem. In reality, they are not affected by some person who has little power anyway, and so it is hypothetically easy to gather them together into a group then it would be for republicans to do so, since there are conflicting interests in that political group.

We have no reason to burn bridges, and every reason to be more inclusive. A racist old person? Talk to them about the bus they take every day and how they should have more buses working. LIbertarian who likes the ganja but hates 'big government'(whatever they think THAT means. seriously open question there)? Talk about how big government is giving kickbacks to corporate fatcats who think they are above the market, and how those same fatcats prevent the government from doing GOOD things, because 'oh no that would be big government' pointing out how they are hypocritical in nature, unlike them, who are very smart and see that for what it is.

People have bad ideas every day. People who vote republican have a lot of bad Ideas, but so do we, and it is all to easy to find common ground. I actually think that all the negativity might have been more harm then good, and that by trying to understand people and bridge the gap with them, which does not require parroting them whatsoever, we could make an environment much more friendly to our ideas.

I for one have never gotten anywhere by butting heads with anyone. It just isn't a strength of mine.

Racists don't ride the bus, it's full of those people (i.e., minorities). That's the problem. In theory, improving bus service to white neighborhoods should be good for white people, particularly poor whites...but in practice, white neighborhoods often actively reject and fight against mass transit improvements in their area because they're afraid it might bring more minorities into their carefully segregated neighborhood.

You know what I'm absolutely sick of? The presumption by so many people in this thread that the Dems don't have an economic message and never tried to appeal to white people. Guess what? They do, and they did - it's just that white people rejected the appeals because respectable hard-working self-sufficient fellows like them haven't sunk so low as to need help from the government, and in fact, the only "help" they need is for government to stop taking their money away via taxes to give to the lazy worthless slacker insert minority here. Can we work on seeing if there's a way to improve the Dems' economic message? Sure. But let's not pretend there's a captive audience just waiting for the Dems to acknowledge that they exist - they're waiting for a very specific message, one that conflicts very heavily with a lot of the Dems' basic principles. The Dems that managed to get the white working class appeal you're fantasizing about were the Blue Dogs and Third Wayers everyone hates so much - and ultimately, most of them got cleaned out by Republicans over the past few elections, because Republicans didn't have to engage in an awkward balancing act every time someone blamed their economic problems on immigrants or taxes.

There's the eighteen-year-old kids who romanticize blue collar work or whatever, but in reality it doesn't interest them at all so they never engage with it and learn. Instead they just don't wear PPE and make a lot of mistakes but their fingernails are dirty so they are real men who share "MINIMUM SKILLS DESERVE MINIMUM WAGE" Facebook memes daily from their $10/hr thrones.

Last year this 28-year-old guy who had a decade of entry-level automotive experience literally self-immolated because he tried to smoke a cigarette after getting in a brake cleaner fight with another dumbass. He's working another entry-level automotive job at another shop now.

The 40-something versions are more depressing. By that point they are invariably missing front teeth, crippled in payday loan debt, etc. Too lazy, stupid or shortsighted to have ever progressed in a trade but too proud to live off of disability benefits from an invented chronic injury.
