Just buy a kart. I paid $3k for mine and $400 a year and a few days volunteering gets me keys to the track. Edit: I can't say enough that I'm more excited for the 2017 season of my lovely kart club championship with my Minardi-esque kart than I am for the F1 rule changes. But is karting really that viable outside of the UK? I know that all the gear would cost a fortune in AU retail, or to ship here buying online. Also a shitload more tracks overthere i assume.

Yup, hundreds of the things, mostly in the midlands (which is where the F1 teams live) even my local garden centre has a mini kart track. Baseline for a second hand entry level kart is £150-£1000 if you buy from tracks (the entry level get passed around A Lot) and if it's a honda then there are tracks which will let you store it there for £5 a week with free access to the workshop and whatnot. Honda is a thing here, with a lot of tracks if you don't bring a honda you be hiring a kart.
