I wrote a fan letter to Jim Hendry after the world series because I figured the Cubs will eventually run into the Yankees in a few world series assuming they don't Cubs things up which would make it the Epstein/Hendry/Cashman Bowl.

Then I figured he probably voted for Trump so I deleted it. :rip:

Yeah, I thought that just modifying the distance in the calculations was overly simplistic, but it was still cool to see how much faster some of those pitches could have been.

What I found most fascinating was the discussions about how we're at the point where pitchers probably can't physically throw any faster, but that we're also at the point where the ball is traveling so fast that batters can't physically react to the pitches aside from just guessing at location.

I can't imagine they won't get it done. I mean, what kind of third-rate bush league would come off a terrific season where the longest-suffering franchise finally won the big one in a series everyone was watching, look poised to enjoy a major surge in popularity across the continent, and piss it all away on a meaningless work stoppage? That sort of thing seems like it would tank the league's public image and reduce revenue for decades to come, not to mention cause animosity with the union that would result in more, and worse, work stoppages in the future. No major league would be ridiculous enough to actually do that, right?

...

Right?

Rob Manfred was Selig's point man in the 1994 strike (in which the owners' stated goal was to break the union) and in the previous rounds of labor negotiations, and before he started working for MLB he was a partner at a law firm that basically existed to crush unions. I've been worried about this ever since he was promoted to COO.

Manfred would be a colossal moron to cause a work stoppage right now. If the MLBPA doesn't cave before the deadline than the owners will almost certainly drop it. MLB is gambling that the player's union - which has been fairly milquetoast about protecting the rights of players not yet in the union in the past - will figure it's not worth the fight if MLB threatens hardball. So far they've held firm though, which is nice to see.

Both sides will play propaganda war until something is settled.

On the bright side, a potential work stoppage could be good for the WBC? I mean if players know they aren't going to play in April, why not play for their home country (or assigned country of heritage) in March?

The dude is an elite pitch framer, has occasional pop, manages a pitching staff really well. He's slightly above average at throwing out baserunners, but is an automatic out most of the time

A catcher from the 80s

On the plus side, he's probably responsible for Keuchel's Cy Young in 2015

I don't know much about the Dbacks players but Walker and Marte were massive disappointments last year.

Julio Cruz
May 19, 2006
Well Segura's just put up a career-best season at age 26 so who wins the trade is really dependent on whether he's figured it out and will continue to be good or whether it's just an anomaly. The two guys the DBacks got have got promise but they're still both pretty young which makes sense for a team which doesn't figure to be contending for a year or two. Judging from their minor league stats Haniger looks like he might be decent and Curtis is basically a lottery ticket.

My first thought was that the M's weren't confident about Walker's health problems going forward.

Walker has a ton of upside but hasn't put it together yet, Marte likewise is a prospect who's supposed to be good but blew chunks this year. On the D-Backs side Segura was a reclamation project the Brewers gave up on but he raked with the D-Backs, the other two dudes are middle of the farm guys. So it's two high upside lotto tickets for a known entity in Segura and two meh prospects.

Segura is an interesting player and I think the M's weren't totally fleeced. His time with Milwaukee wasn't so great but he showed signs of being a good offensive middle infielder on top of solid defense.

I hadn't followed him at all this year and wow he really broke out. It wasn't a partial season either. He'll be 27 next year and this could be the start of him taking off. Not a bad pick up.

I think you all need to look at Marte and Walker's stats. They were... not great last year, or the year before. The Mariners are selling low, for sure. But neither of them were any good. Walker had health issues, and Marte wasn't putting it together for a sophomore slump. Hitting in Arizona should help him, but who knows if he can figure it out. He's probably going to need more time in AAA. He also makes a lot of mental errors in the field as well.

The deal will really focus on Segura if he provides 2016 numbers or other seasons.

Edit: from a personal side, Taijuan is a cool dude and I'll be sad to see him go from that point of view.

I was batin' to some Trout porn on HitTracker and realized he had 2 HR's at 90.7 degrees of horizontal angle (Dead center is 90 degrees). He hit them both off Felix, they look like the same identical play except with different uni colors. The ball only had a 12 foot difference in distance, the CF even ends up in the same spot. Even looks like identical pitches. Trippy.
