I used to have one that my home town's school district got rid of. I used it as a camera obscura to trace underdrawings for paintings on panel. I didn't have a laptop at the time, so using a used digital projector wasn't an option.

I got rid of it because it was a colossal pain in the rear end to store and transport.

I've never heard of any of those games (except Lemmings of course). I get the feeling that none of them are as rad as their box art.

Lemmings owns though.

Edit: Oh poo poo that guy designed the covers for Budgie's Squawk and pretty much all of Yes' albums. Kick rear end.

Yes. I feel like it is not even a contest. But I am admittedly biased.

There is a reason the sequel and the announced third game in the series pretty much just go "yeah, we are not going to top that, so here it is in a different environment."

Okay that's fair, but if I bought that Agony game I would be pretty confused about being a lavender owl flying through the forest. I'd still probably enjoy it though.

Actually I might be confused that it's a video game at all because I'd probably expect it to be an underground speed metal album.

There's something about low-res/high-color game art that really revs me up. Don't care if the pixels are the size of cinderblocks, if it's 16-bit color and well-done pixel art I am so there.

Probably just the usual nostalgia thing, but I've just always loved the aesthetic, since all the way back when it was the purest expression of futuristic high-tech and infinite possibility.

I have to wonder how many, if any, were painted specifically for the box. I know that the Terrorpods cover is a Martian tripod, from Dean's War of Worlds pictorial.

LGR did a video review of a bunch of those covers including the Terrapods one. Later today I'll find it. It was very interesting.

You're right, there really is no connection between the art and gameplay in many of these cases. Just wanted to point out that the games were fun in their own right, even if slightly... misrepresented by the box :v:

I know that at least Barbarian was, as I picked up the PC version for $5 on a trip to OfficeMax with my mom way back when. I never got past that dragon. http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/barbarian/screenshots/gameShotId,2289/

Also, that game had the screwiest control scheme. You either clicked the icons with the mouse to perform the various actions or you pressed the function keys. Stuff like F1 starts walking left, F2 starts walking right, F3 stops movement, etc.

I think most Psygnosis covers were created in-house for each game, but I can't remember. Kim Justice has created a few interesting documentaries about the old developer/distributor powerhouses, and the one on Psygnosis is no exception. Lots of interesting tidbits about the development and business practices.

One of these days I will hit up an old client who was one of the original Ocean devs. I see him maybe once every few months, so many questions to ask him. Sadly the only time I had a chance I was too busy getting drunk with his mates and screwing around with his guns. He did show me a lot of old paper documentation on some of Oceans' classic games though.
