Spare me the tu quoque. Cuba's "success" at controlling the AIDS epidemic was due to rounding up gays and confining them to prison camps. The man presided over 60 years of brutality and torture which he also tried to export through force of arms to places like Angola. This is a leader who ordered his MiGs to strafe the makeshift boats of people trying to escape his regime.

I understand the hipsterish ironic detachment that holds that the US is evil and therefore that anyone who opposes the US is good, but keep in mind that actually believing that makes you look irredeemably ridiculous to anyone who actually studies history.

Something like half of all tourism in Cuba is Canadians, because it's "sunny place to go in the winter where there aren't any Americans." Of course Trudeau isn't going to call the country out on its bullshit.

I dont think Castro was good or anything, but, like most regimes that have problems with the United States and have lovely lives are directly tied to the United States strangling them at every opportunity. Not saying its the United States who made Castro a strongman, but maybe, just maybe, those problems wouldn't be so massive if they were allowed to participate in the Northern Hemisphere economy.

Castro sucked, I'm not denying that, but it's really funny seeing people completely flip their poo poo over others thinking he was kind of sympathetic. Like you, for example! :D

I also see people celebrating Castro's death who are at the same time worried about who's going to replace him. There's a lot of Americans who still think the Cold War is happening and Cuba is about to nuke us at any given moment.

I know the feeling. It's the same incongruity of seeing the same people wringing their hands with worry that Trump will be a dictator waxing elegiac in praise of an actual one.

Unrelated: "I may have sexually texted a teen boy, but that doesn't mean I'm gay," says Republican politician.

People have lower standards when the country has had worse rulers. Its like having a really bad king followed by a not so bad one. Sure he's not great but compared to the last guy?

Meanwhile if you've had a reasonably good one previously but now you have someone who has said they want to kill all the dukes and replace them with his families members... then you might get antsy.

I blame all those old people still scared of the "red menace", when in reality cuba hasn't been a threat to us for a long rear end time. Same thing when we could have some progressive social programs but old people are against it because of "socialism".

Just FYI there are a LOT of men who have sex with men who will vigorously and angrily insist they are not gay. They have sex with men, but being gay isn't part of it. e.g. men in prison.

Republicans work the same way.
