This. If you've got a chance to win, you try for it. If you can't, then it would be a dick move to try and make your teammate lose if he was the only one out of the two of you that could win, but like you're going to just hand it away if you've got any sort of non-zero shot.

If I were in 3rd and I could tell that the 1st-place driver was backing their teammate into me I would immediately refuse to pass, no discussion, no conflict, just keep the 4th-place driver off me and I'm good

He was literally defying the boss of his team. The team that has given him a car that as we've just seen a mid pack driver can win a world championship with and hes risking that for next season to try and win the championship now. Not a single other driver in the sport right now would ever do that.
