astrophysics and religion both bring me joy and comfort but this loving job has plunged me straight into existential despair. who am i? what is my purpose? do i actually matter to anyone or anything? can i effect real change in the world or am i doomed to be a self-loathing paperwork drone forever with no reprieve until my death? what if my life is just a glimpse into the great cosmic theatre and instead of working in an office for three months i've been trapped in a perpetual cycle of reincarnation into a perpetual population of self-loathing office drones or the contextual technological equivalent for three eons? what if this is all there is? not just now, not just for me, but forever and for everyone? what if this IS as good as it gets for my species?
