Another sub uses deck guns to be effective.

Our battleships catch the enemy! They give chase and are able to bring down most of their escorts and get shells in on both carriers! The Enterprise is reported to be listing badly.

Have we done enough damage to stop them putting planes into the air?

You fools! There are carriers to sink!

A Banshee gets a bomb hit in – one of three planes, of course.

We reach the afternoon air strikes.

At least one carrier still has a functioning flight deck. Curses!

This is a supporting heavy cruiser force. They take a couple of hits.

We bring down another fortress.

But we continue to take losses on the ground.

That was a day I wanted to end quickly after the naval battle.

That said, we got some good hits in, and 91 enemy aircraft lost on the field is a good indication that the Enterprise has been sunk!

We see the confirmed kills here, but there is no extra point jump – maybe she is still alive? This is not the first time we've seen a mass loss of enemy planes. Intelligence have a lot of work ahead of themselves.

[img]http://lpix.org/2635695/11.jpg

Looking at the damage, and the distance to port, we may get lucky and only lose a destroyer,

If you are wondering why there were no destroyers with the battleships, I moved them all to the cruiser group, as I thought the battleships would be to slow to engage – I've transferred some across to them now.

The mission now is to confirm the kills tomorrow. We could wipe out the US carrier fleet tomorrow!

For some reason I just assumed that if you hit a Fleet carrier it'd just explode or something. I'm surprised it's still afloat but shows how much I know about ships.

Yeah, this is clearly the best possible outcome in terms of narrative. Instead of Midway ushering in the age of carrier supremacy we have this

Killing more carriers means that it'll take longer for the allies to fight back and/or gain air superiority.

Basically, you're delaying the inevitable.

If Grey manages to sink both of the carriers in the next engagement how many American carriers will there be left in the Pacific? Not counting the Essex or others of that class about to roll off the lines.

Holy.. Futz. Grey you glorious Sunnuva. My hat is off.

Enterprise is brutalized, so only Lexington has planes (probably). With no escorts even if you have to withdraw some of your TF's you can hopefully catch her. Congratulations. WOW.

The North Carolina is also one of the few fast BB's the Allies get early on, so the Allies are left with even fewer decent escorts that have good AA and can keep up with CV's.

Only problem I see is that the BB's might have already shot all their big gun ammo off. It's hard to tell because I think the gun ammo section of the top fleet is just the Mutsu. the CA's at least should be able to hit the Lexington (and ideally sink).

wedgekree
Feb 20, 2013
Also ow - is the Mutsu going to make it or not, she looks sorta worked over. She going to be detatched and sent back to port or you going to keep her with the main assault fleet?

The Allies should have received 11 carriers to supplement the starting 4.

Saratoga is dead,
Enterprise is likely dead (if not dying),
Long Island is presumed dead,
Yorktown is dead
Wasp is dead
Illustrious is assumed dead

Formidable and Indomitable appear to be okay
Lexington is okay (for now)

We haven't seen:
Hermes
Hornet
Copahee
Nassau
Prince William, and
Altamaha

Lets consult the table!

Looking at the chart (though its late here and I might be missing numbers) we can expect 12 new American carriers by the end of next year. Currently we've sunken most of the pre-Midway carrier force.

Wasp
Saratoga
Yorktown

If we're lucky this battle we'll have taken out the Enterprise and Lexington. This just would leave Hornet as the last American fleet carrier in play assuming the others are indeed down for (ironic, Hornet was the last American Fleet Carrier to be sunk, lost in 26 October 1942). If all this is true, then we've pretty much iced all Pre-Essex class fleet carriers.

Now we just have to content with the 32 Essex's slated for construction! :suicide:

So we have several months to dig in and/or romp around the Pacific some more. If Grey can play his cards right and snipe out enemy carriers as the come online by keeping 1 or 2 consolidated carrier fleets, he could possibly push through '43 with a good lead assuming low casualties. So far we're only down one fleet carrier and one light carrier. The downside is we can't expect too many more carriers on our side to come online. So we'll need to maximize the next 6-9 months to really try and consolidate our holdings, grab more of China and any islands we still need to and figure out how to entrap the Americans. Island plane fortresses might be our best bet but who knows!

*Edit* Also for my lucky ship can I claim the Astoria? I'm hoping she has better luck here than in WW2

CVL Hermes - British
CV Hornet - USA
CVE Copahee - USA
CVE Nassau - USA
CVE Prince William - USA
CVE Altamaha - USA

Prince William and Altamaha both spent time in the Royal Navy, however, but I'm pretty sure they are tagged as US ships when they become available.

Each of those escort carriers only carry ~24 aircraft each. For comparison, the Hornet carries 72 aircraft.

The Hermes only has 20 aircraft on hand. The Indomitable: 50 aircraft. The Formidable: ~50 aircraft.

Hmm, If Grey can sink the Lexington and finish off the Enterprise tomorrow he will have a massive advantage over the Americans in terms of fleet carriers. The AI seems fond of doing suicide raids with it's carriers, so if they try that with the Hornet and at least one of the CVEs Grey might have a legitimate shot of being in a position to sink all of the carriers of any type that the Americans currently have in the Pacific. Although with his current plans of expansion he may be able to bait the Americans into a carrier battle as well.
