Thanks for reposting. I actually bought my copy of the set a few years ago when Walmart had them for $25. It's still an impressive set between the flawless restoration and going the extra mile with all-HD supplements. Forgot to mention that both versions have a full-length commentary.

Speaking of silents, there's a few on the way...

Kino Lorber confirmed they're working on the Paramount silents Zaza (starring Gloria Swanson) and The Shiek (starring Rudolph Valentino).

Practically all silents from MoC and BFI are totally worth getting over the US editions.

Man with a Movie Camera has a vastly better encode over the US Flicker Alley edition, plus adds a thick book and a commentary. Lobster Films decided to cram 5 hours of films onto a single BD-50 while MoC split the same content across two BD-50s.

BFI's Chaplin Mutuals set adds an entire extra set of scores by Carl Davis, commentaries, and have better sync and encodes than the Flicker Alley set. They're releasing an Essanay set soon, too.

Also, if you get MoC's Fear and Desire, it includes Kubrick's first two shorts Day of the Fight and Flying Padre, which aren't available on video anywhere else in the world.

They're official. It was released in Australia and Japan.

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Prince-Sign-o-the-Times-Blu-ray/42826/

I think there's some type of rights issue holding it up in America or it could be that the domestic rights reverted back to Prince after a certain amount of time. Cineplex-Odeon Films released it in the US and it's a mess trying to decipher who could possibly be the right holders now.

from the comments posted:

The film has passed through several owners. First Cineplex Odeon Films, then Alliance Atlantis, then Canwest, and now Postmedia Network Canada.
Postmedia is not in the DVD business, they only bought all the assets of Canwest in a bankruptcy sale. So I guess that’s why they don’t have DVD distribution in the US. But the other companies were listed as having US distribution, so no idea why they didn’t release it.

Man, Amazon hosed up and sent me two copies of the 16:9 blu version when I bought it on sale for stupidly cheap at some point, so I might switch out to this version if the pound continues to fall against the Australian dollar. As someone who's never seen the 4:3, the 16:9 edition wasn't obscene but there were some really obvious framing gently caress ups throughout.

The slipcase got crushed, but the book(let) and inner digipack are fine. Honestly, I don't care since I've been waiting for Napoleon on disc since I first got a DVD player in 2000.

With that being said, it's too bad they didn't use a more stable package like Criterion's (besides the initial Night of the Hunter misstep). Though, it could be just from Amazon UK using cheap "ravioli" packaging instead of a proper box. Then again, that's how the first printing of Night of the Hunter was shipped to me and it was still squished thanks to the flimsy construction.

Nothing matches the first edition of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, though.

By comparison, the Criterion digipacks for films like Fanny & Alexander, By Brakhage, and Three Colors are really well constructed. They still look great despite having been through 3-4 moves.

Sony really outdid themselves on some films. The original Taxi Driver was in this thick slipcase with lobby card reproductions.

Lawrence of Arabia got this gorgeous laserdisc-sized case with the discs in a regular amaray, but compartments for the coffee table book and 70mm frame.

Dr. Strangelove had a nice digibook, even though Criterion completely went all out on a digipack with the "Plan R" envelope.

For that matter, Disney is experimenting with laserdisc-sized gatefolds in the UK. Techmoan did a short piece on The Force Awakens and Guardians of the Galaxy. They look like laserdiscs, except there's built-in sleeves for the discs inside.

I think those album-style Blus would be better with a little concept art/production booklet than those cheesy art cards. I think collectors would much rather have something that resembled a mini Art Of coffee table book rather than some photoshopped mini posters an overworked and underpassionate designer slaps together in a few days that will never be removed from the sleeve after the first time.

Love the concept, though. If those got popular enough I could really see some companies doing really interesting things with them.

While I'm saving Napoleon for watching with family next weekend (or after), I watched some of the extras.

The Charm of Dynamite is a great documentary. You'd almost wish it were longer than 52 minutes. Lots of clips from Gance's films, including a lot of behind-the-scenes footage from Napoleon. You get to see how some shots were achieved like a second angle.

The Carl Davis interview is amazing. He goes over how he got into silent film scoring, but also talks about the approach he takes. This might be one of my favorite interviews I've seen on a silent release. It helps that Davis is incredibly enthusiastic about his work - and he's 80 years old!

But it does show how important music is to presenting a silent film. A great score makes a great film even greater.

Detective No. 27 posted:

I think it was Criterion's first 2-disc Blu-Ray. The problem is a combination of the cardboard being a little thin compared to others (like Godzilla and Sweet Smell of Success) and also it's oversized. It has a regular booklet, yet the package is way thicker than digipacks with actual bound booklets like Eraserhead or Mulholland Dr.

My guess is that they intended it to have a thicker book originally. The second pressing switched to the standard 2-disc clear case (like Brazil).

Otherwise, all of Criterion's digipack releases are fantastic examples of high quality packaging. I love it when they do thicker booklets because they tend to include longer interviews and more photos.
