A system to mess with patch notes to product a unique sample for each tester for tracing purposes would actually be more complicated to put together than their current patcher which just downloads a new version of everything.

Ol Cactus Dick posted:TESO randomly flashed your email address all over the screen to catch people leaking screenshots during the alpha. Did TESO advertise "most open development ever" and was it funded by the players themselves? I would find it preposterous if any kickstarters or early-access games that I take part in tried to out testers somehow. Or run super secret backer club tests that are not accessible to other people who PAID MONEY TO BE IN THE ALPHA. Like wtf?

I don't think CIG is competent enough to pull anything like that off, I was just saying that companies will do stuff to catch specific people breaking NDA. Something else I was a tester for did something similar but I don't remember what game it was.

Lots of games do stuff across the screen. Battlefield closed betas always is a good example But they don't modify each individual persons copy the lol That's just ridiculous

ManofManyAliases posted:I mean, other companies have done this for pre-alpha and alpha testing. But I thought CIG wasn't like other companies and would be the most open development ever? "Warts and all"? Instead they have decided to have three layers of alpha to prevent the general public from knowing what is going on. I see nothing wrong with slowly rolling each version out to a select group of backers; if for no other reason to keep the bug reporting from turning into a tidal wave, but putting some testers under NDA is the most hilariously stupid move for an open development game. The only thing sadder is the fact that SC superfans are so desperate to kiss CIG's rear end they help crack down on the leaks.

Like, I knew that CryENGINE was an FPS engine, but I hadn't realized that the CryENGINE 3 SDK literally had tutorials for how to set up and run multiplayer deathmatches with 32 players right out of the box I thought I couldn't be any more underwhelmed by CIG's almost achievement with Star Marine, but here we are

Tokamak posted:Strange that no one has posted the patch notes, or there has been much chatter about the FPS stuff (or really any other part of the patch). Citizens love to feel like insiders, and having special access to stuff (even MOMA does it). So you'd think one of them would be only too happy to let us know how much fun they are having and what we are missing out on. Even if it's only to gloat over the Derek and the doubters. I guess we will see in two weeks, if we are any closer to release. It will be quite a test of faith. That's because i) it's shite ii) there is no Star Marine - like at all For a $137 million project that likes to tout "openness", it's interesting that since 2.6 was released to Evocati yesterday, backers have no clue what's in it. Particularly it doesn't contain Star Marine; and CIG never even mentioned it. Meanwhile, some backers are spreading false rumors that it is released.....just because they claim to have seen some file assets in the download.
