Hope Gearbox will join the fun and ask TerminusEst to remove Duke from Samsara. Let's make this year godawful on all fronts. I'm uploading all the archived DoomRL version to the Internet Archive, so our favourite roguelike will be safe in Canada.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get square/pixel particles in Quake 2? It has it in software mode, but there doesn't seem to be anyway to emulate it in hardware, texture filtering is easily turned off but unlike Quake 1 there isn't an r_particle command.

The only bummer about Darksiders is that the budget clearly ran out at some point because the last dungeon is super repetitive and bland garbage and doesn't have the amazing character of the other dungeons, especially the spider city, which imo is the coolest dungeon ever in a 3D Zelda (or Zelda-like in this case).

Which version of Pathologic should I be getting? I keep hearing great things about this weird game and I've been tempted for years to play it, but it kept falling off my radar and I don't trust any gaming sites for reviews or opinions except job and industry focused ones, so I'm kinda blind here. I think it's by the same devs that worked on The Void and I really liked it as a surreal waifu simulator with color puzzles. Also, which version of System Shock 1 do people prefer? Regular or Enhanced?

I always liked the interpretation that most people in Black Mesa hate Gordon because he's a mute weirdo who likes to crawl around in air vents and always shows up late for work. Which is why they make him do all the manual work and never let him in on any of the big secrets.

Pathologic isn't really an FPS even to the extent that The Void is. I mean yeah you're a first person and you can shoot stuff, but shooting isn't even close to the focus of the game. Like The Void it's a resource management/survival game at heart, but in The Void your ultimate goal is to survive long enough to kill just about everything and you're given plenty of ways in which to do so, whereas in Pathologic you're just trying to get by till time is up. Get the Classic HD edition though, the original version's translation is rubbish and makes the game way more difficult to understand than it needs to be.

They are working on a remake of Pathologic , and released a demo for KS backers yesterday, and people are sying the studio is livelier than ever. So I'd wait for the remake at this point.

Pathologic is a strange game. At the best of times the english translation is incomprehensible, and it is not very fun to actually play. It is kind of neat to explore the insanity of the setting but dont go into it expecting to be having a fun story driven FPS.

The Doctor was kind of understandable in a babelfish sort of way, then the haruspex or whatever his name was became quite a bit less understandable and i couldnt parse even a tiny bit of the girls story. I just remember the game itself being a chore to play because if you didnt do things exactly right people would die of the plague and it would somehow make even less sense and it was just an all around exhausting experience.

I played through my CD copy in DosBox and just remapped a couple of the keyboard keys. While you're right, you can change the MIDI device with a clever bit of Hex editing. http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/System_Shock:_Enhanced_Edition#Select_MIDI_Device Though it'll still probably require you to mess around with VirtualMIDISynth and/or MUNT (does System Shock even support Roland MT-32?) beforehand.

Coolio, I got a good idea of what to choose now. Also, any way of not getting my rear end handed to me on Blood because of the damage bug? Should I play on harder difficulties or stick to the one in the middle?

It's a bug in Blood but I think offsetting an increased enemy presence by making them weaker is actually a good design concept. Do you want a power fantasy where you fight entire hordes of hapless mooks, or a more serious thing with much less enemies but they are more dangerous?

IIRC it's not just enemies, though, you actually hurt yourself more due to the save bug as well (eg: with splash damage).

Then I guess it's to be expected.

I don't think it changes when the map loads, but on save load, you basically one-shot yourself with your dynamite on the lowest difficulty setting. Considering how it adheres to the Build Engine staple of asking you to blow up everything, that's kind of annoying.

But I don't mind the dynamite cultists. I think I just like my enemies having defined roles?

I remember playing through Blood on the equivalent to Ultra-violence being pretty hard but doable. It's just that the game is just loving hard anyway, so you might as well be playing the game on Caleb Must Die mode where you can die from two hits. Turok was fun. Finished it and it all felt like a nice fluid game I can keep coming back to. Never finished the Chronosceptre and the tree top village level was a pain no navigate when trying to find secrets, but it was a super solid package. Going back to SiN again, because it's just one of those games I need to go back to every once in a while.
