The true enemy of humanity is disorder.
Guessing this is the closest thing we have to a Dead Rising 4 thread?

My review is embargoed for another 10 hours, but I can say without breaking anything that I am very loving interested in seeing the general reaction people will have to this game.

Huh, either that means its a solid game but not like the first two so it will be really love it or hate it or its just that godawful.

(Probably the latter, but I think the former would be more interesting.)

Post your review here when you can. It sounds like this game will be a hilarious trainwreck.

There's a number of people playing it on twitch already, gamefaqs also has threads with impressions/spoilers.

The short version: it isn't a complete disaster, but it also isn't the kind of experience that you'd come to this franchise to get, especially since I've been playing the recent DR remasters. There are things I like about DR4, quite a few things I don't, and some things that don't need to be here at all.

It might be a fun rental. I need to get some MP matches in, though.

Yeah looking at some Twitch streams it definitely looks they went pretty hard into the generic AAA sandbox mold. Some of those new combo weapons look fun though.

This. It isn't an unenjoyable experience at all. But the specifics of it will likely divide the fanbase forever.

It seems weird to try with the fourth game to get more people into it. Playing not to your base seems like a bad idea, especially if the game is bad.

I think the console exclusivity hurt it more than anything else.

That's really weird since the first DR was a console exclusive and did decently well.

The 360 was a popular console.

Did it? How come Capcom washed off their hands off it and gave it to Blue Castle games then? Granted they did a good job but its still odd Capcom would just out source a popular franchise, especially a new one.

it was a Inafune game and I think he left around 2010 with his last project being Megaman Legends, which explains why it took them a long time to get to another Dead Rising. They then killed Legends 3 and then outsourced DR.

Dead Rising 2 was part of Keiji Inafune's attempt to bring Western developers onto Japanese IPs. They didn't 'wash their hands' of it, it was the same as a lot of their other projects.

A hard-on for combined with a staggeringly awful track record. Dark Void, Bionic Commando, Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z, Lost Planet 3, DmC, ReCore... the only success he had was DR2 honestly, but that's because he kept going back to the same wells.

Accordion Man

Lost Planet 3 could have been good if it wasn't forced to be a prequel to Lost Planet 1.

The narrative is actually rather solid and unique until the main villains from the first game pop up and ruin it all by being cartoonishly evil in a game where any antagonists before hand are treated as misguided or good people just trying protect their loved ones.

He's not exactly wrong to be so. He's right in that the Japanese development community's got some challenges recently, but he'd do well to get somebody else to go talent-hunting for him. It seems like Blue Castle was his only real, unqualified success.

Video game marketing 101: your "base" for a franchise is good for marketing, word of mouth, and building a community.

Your profit comes from the vast, silent majority, or what enthusiasts refer to as the "casual" market. Most of the decisions made in DR4 are for the casual market, and they're hoping to satisfy the enthusiast crowd with the story mode and continuity porn.

GenericMartini

I mean that's kinda funny seeing as didn't DR2 sell better than DR3 and OTR? two games that tried to gain that casual market with more emphasis on freedom and less emphasis on the time limit (in OTR's case having a full mode for people to dick around in without the constraints of the time limit)

DR2 sold 2.2 million; DR3 sold 1.9 million when you combine the Xbox One and Steam versions. DR3 was also an Xbox One launch title, and I believe was the best-selling one of the lot, while DR2 was cross-platform at launch and received a fairly robust marketing push. It's a bit of an apples-and-oranges situation overall, due to external circumstances.

It's a tricky situation. On the one hand, triple-A video game production is so expensive and time-consuming at this point that I can't begrudge anyone for wanting to minimize their personal risk; there have been a lot of games, studios, and developers that have failed, closed, or been fired because they were only modest successes, which meant they still lost money.

On the other, there's never going to be no risk, and I can't think of a game offhand that was improved by being designed by committee, or for having additional executive-decreed, focus-tested features wedged into it like an elephant into an elevator car.

Sounds increasingly like something I'd pick up once it comes to Steam a few months from now at a heavy discount. I enjoyed Dead Rising 3 enough even though it already lost a lot of the elements I loved about Dead Rising 1, 2 and Off the Record but 4 seems to have stripped away the remaining elements of the series. Like I don't give a gently caress about Frank if it's a different voice actor, he acts completely differently than before and all sense of player urgency is removed.

In short, I liked it for what it was - but it isn't a classic Dead Rising game. Not at all. No how. No way.

If anyone has questions they want answered, I am around for the next hour or so.

I'm sorry I just can't get over that They've cut out Overtime, made it DLC, and the DLC is just DR1's Overtime mode! Look at the description for it, it's just DR1 Overtime but you have to pay for it!

So ending spoilers, because seriously what the ACTUAL gently caress Vancouver.

Frank and Posse run to the Helecopter, Frank leaps and grabs onto it, the Zombies, which are now of course the Super Fast zombies loving UNITE LADDER to dog pile Frank who lets go and gets eaten. Then the side characters literally poo poo on Frank in the ending calling him a glory hound who made poo poo up and did it for the fame. This is, as far as spoilers have made clear, the only ending. The DLC Frank Rising, is this. And I'm not spoiling it because they've released its descriptions, but tell me if this doesn't sound Familiar.

quote:

In this DLC, Frank West is freshly infected and needs to find a cure before he becomes a zombie and is lost forever. While searching for a cure, Frank discovers that everything is not the same as it was; zombies are getting smarter, people cannot be trusted and paramilitary forces are plotting to wipe out Willamette. Frank has a limited time before he reverts to the full zombie state and the city is wiped out. Frank will have to get to the truth first… or die trying.

This all sounds like DR4 is the Hitman: Absolution of Dead Rising. And like Hitman, the Dead Rising franchise's only hope is a full-stop reboot back to square one but with better graphics and quality-of-life stuff.

Around 3's release there was a rumour going around that it only got made because of Microsoft and Capcom was already ready to shitcan the series before then, so that wouldn't surprise me. Considering 3's ending, it might've been true.
