If I was elected the king of all podcasting and allowed to pass one law that all pop-culture/media podcasts had to follow it would be a tie between forbidding white American native English speakers from tortuously going out of their way to use the Japanese titles and pronunciations of things and making it so that childless unmarried people in their 30s and beyond aren't allowed to complain at length about parenting, censorship, and Kids These Days.

Yes I've been listening to a lot of Retronauts and Laser Time, how could you tell?

Pocketcasts has always been my go to favorite. It has never messed up my feed, always kept episodes the amount of time I wanted them kept and downloaded them only in the conditions I set, has good settings for changing speed, reducing silence, and increasing speech volume. Also supports Chromecast. And my media control buttons on my Pebble work with it.

I'm guessing this is the right thread for recommendations? I need some new podcasts.

I like podcasts where you learn something. Series that go deep on an often unknown or interesting issue: Radiolab, Reply All, Invisibilia, Freakonomics, This American Life, Planet Money etc.

I also like trivia like No Such Thing As a Fish, or Do Go On (an Australian one that does just one story which is just interesting enough to compensate for the hosts)

I also like the occasional topical news chat show like Mamamia Out Loud, and the News Quiz from BBC's Friday night comedy is great.

Interview shows, but only the episodes with good guests - Like I'm a 6 year old, Conversations, etc.

Parenting I've just got This Glorious Mess

And listening to smart people talk about stuff, like This Week in Start Ups and TED radio hour.

Musically, Song Exploder and All Songs Considered are cool too.

Anyway in spite of all that I feel like I don't have enough to listen to lately, so if anyone can beef it up with recommendations that would be appreciated.

You will not like half of them, but there is your list.

I stopped listening to political gabfest when David and Emily started obviously hating each other during the primary, and they had always been bitchy. I switched to NPRs politics podcast - same format with more contributors. You lose John Dickerson but a.) he has whistlestop now which is better and b.) npr has Ron Elving who takes his place as the serious grounded / knowledge one. It's not really hot takes but for generic suburban D voter nod-alongs it's better imo.

David Plotz is a libertarian and has proclaimed he is a republican if they weren't so racist. Emily and John both seemed to figure it out this election. I only listen to it because Emily has very good takes on judicial happenings and John has very good takes on history and behind the scenes stuff. All three are incredibly out of touch though. Same with the majority of political podcasts.

life is a joke
Mar 7, 2016
Huh no kidding, I had no idea and he was a libertarian and just assumed he was rooting for the Democrats in a slightly grouchy way. I don't dislike any of them too bad, but npr and slate cover the exact same stuff in the same way on a similar schedule, but my main man Sam Sanders and his crew sigh/scoff at each other less and joke around more. But ya your main point that nobody in a mainstream politics podcast is super in touch makes it a bit of an apples to apples comparison anyway.

Trying to get more politically active after we flipped over into living in a particularly scary Black Mirror episode earlier this month. Really been digging Keepin' It 1600, wondering if there's something similar: educated, smart, collected progressives who don't get angry and yell and ideally have actual connections to politics rather than being purely armchair internet pundits. And not so dry that I feel like I'm listening to NPR.

Saw the list earlier but it's really hard to sift through for what I'm looking for without a bit of guidance. Unlike the above poster I don't mind some smug liberalism as long as they're not just Some Guy from The Internet.

Please stop giving clicks and attention to the mentally ill podcast guy who jerks off to Ogrish material and then in a post-orgasm haze of regret moralizes about how sick and wrong the world is and how mentally ill people should be euthanized. The first episode I remember being taken aback by how dumb he was , was when he had some Q&A with a bunch of other past guests about if Evil exists. They all gave these incredibly nuanced answers about the nature of man and all that and then at the end he just gives this incredibly "Yes evil does exist it's around every corner" simplistic answer.

Yea Sword and Scale was pretty decent but it's devolved into some weird moralizing "THE MENTALLY ILL ARE A CONSTANT DANGER TO US ALL AND THE FILTHY CHILDREN OF THE DAY GO ALONG WITH IT" sermon and any time he has actual experts on to provide interesting insight he ruins it by just farting out a 'yes evil is real and strong and is my friend and it exists in every mentally ill soul the end good bye' conclusion. If you told me during that Q&A he just got up and left the room until the last wrap-up where he did his dumb poo poo I wouldn't be surprised at all, it seems like he just does his podcast to hear himself talk and feel very wise.

Criminal is a good alternative, it's a true crime podcast but it has a way more humanistic approach and is willing to shake things up so even when it covers heinous crimes you get a handful of lesser but still interesting cases as a palette cleanser.

The recent episode about a girl who has been a victim of identity theft for her entire life only to posthumously find out that her mother was the one doing it the entire time is a particularly good contrast because instead of ranting and raving about how sociopaths are a menace to society it mostly focuses on how it effected the life of the now grown-up woman and how she used it constructively to fuel her own work combating identity theft.
