Were double hosed if we don't do all we can to keep all of our seats in the midterm and fight for more(also at every level of government). It's going to take a tremendous messaging campaign something like the Tea Party sweep to make it happen.

Reminder: 27 of 38 governors races coming up in midterms are Republican incumbents. That is opportunity

communism's sleepiest soldier

TIme for a 3:00 AM yelling into the infinite void of a terrible thread in C-SPAM! Since I'm located in the Austin area, I'm again only focusing on Travis and WIlliamson Counties.

ATTENTION CENTRAL TEXAS GOONS - here's your weekly "go do some poo poo instead of whining on an internet forum" post

:siren:TRAVIS COUNTY GOONS:siren: These are the groups meeting for the upcoming week:
Tue, Dec 6 @ 5:30PM Capital Area Progressive Democrats are meeting at the AFL-CIO office at 1106 Lavaca St #200, Austin TX
Wed, Dec 7 @ 6:00PM Travis County Democratic Party is having their County Executive Committee at 1500 E 4th Street, Austin TX - If you have any interest in becoming part of the party, go to this meeting! This meeting is when appointees to empty precinct chairs will be made and sworn in.
Wed, Dec 7 @ 6:45PM West Austin Democrats are meeting at Howson Branch Library on 2500 Exposition Blvd, Austin TX
Thu, Dec 8 @ 6:00PM Black Austin Democrats are meeting at Precinct 1 Constable Building, 4717 Heflin Lane, Austin TX
Sat, Dec 10 @ 11:00 AM Northeast Travis County Democrats are meeting at Tres Amigos Restaurant & Cantina, 7535 US 290 Frontage Rd, Austin TX

:siren:WILLIAMSON COUNTY GOONS:siren: These are the meetings for the upcoming two weeks (doing 2 weeks because there's only a few parties in WilCo)
Wed, Dec 7 @ 6:30PM Western Wilco Democrats are meeting at Los Reyes Mexican Restaurant, 13776 US Hwy 183 N, Austin TX
Thu, Dec 8 @ 6:45PM Williamson County Democratic Party are meeting at the Allen R Baca Center, 301 Bagdad, Building 2, Round Rock TX. If you have an interest in having your voice heard, or seeing what the party's plans are going forward, be at this meeting!
Thu, Dec 15 @ 6:30PM WCDP is having a holiday party at Georgetown Community Center, 445 E Morrow St, Georgetown TX. This is... less important, really, but if you wanna get drunk and talk to people its' a good a place as any. You can buy a ticket here for $25.

:siren:THIS poo poo APPLIES TO EITHER COUNTY:siren:
In both Williamson and Travis Counties, there are runoff elections for democratic candidates. If you have nothing better to do (and let's face it, you have nothing better to do), early voting is going on right now and the candidates could use your vote. This is the first and only time I'll mention this.
Also, Councilman-elect Jimmy Flannigan is hosting a "What's Next?" meeting, both on Tuesday, December 6 @ 6:30PM at 10501 Hard Rock Rd, Austin TX and on Sunday, December 11 @ 3:00PM at 11009 Andenwood Dr, Austin TX. This meeting is designed to be a discussion forum on the elections, the implications of it, and what you can do to get involved. I met Jimmy at the Wilco Young Dems meeting, and he was a really cool dude with a very Bernie/Keith-like set of ideals and methodologies - I think these meetings will be a very good opportunity to learn stuff and get more involved.

EDIT: missed a Travis party.

I'm looking at attending the local County Districts Democrats meeting coming up next week - I live in a Blue District in a Blue City in a Blue County in a Blue State - my biggest concerns coming up are strengthening our unions, we don't want to lose the labor base - things seem to be doing OK here on that, would like to make sure we focus on that going forward, seeing if we can use our Dem majority to push for a GMI - this seems like a huge pipe dream, but I'm not going to be spending to my nights arguing for incrementalism, and Ranked Choice Voting - this seems like both the easiest to do of anything, and the hardest to sell. Does anyone have any ideas on how to sell Ranked Choice Voting to winning Democrats?

Her campaign was terrible. She was terrible.

the cascade of failures through the whole thing and the utter failure of the campaign to do basically anything right are gonna be the real story, cause everyone watched trump gently caress up over and over all you gotta do is peruse some fuckin' headlines. It was an utter failure to do anything at all except line the pockets of the people close to the campaign. That's what we thought Trump's candidacy was, and it fuckin' SHOULD'VE been except Hillary's was the goddamn same thing and now his presidency will do it.

How did she, and her message, get 2.5 million more votes than Trump? Please answer this question before ever posting again in this thread.

How the gently caress do you even constructively engage with people like this? Ostensibly, they're on our "team", and yet their devotion to a failed candidate and destructive worldview weighs us down like ballast. There must be some way to compromise with people like this who just think YEAH BLUE TEAM and don't realize that yes, democrats can suck, too.

Oh and I asked this a few weeks ago but no one answered:

What is a good way to get involved politically or socially at the local level? By which I mean volunteering or community organizing. I want to make the world a better place with my own two hands, even if it's just helping a neighborhood get working streetlights or helping people get clean clothes so they can go to job interviews.

If they're partisan hacks they'll come over on their own after the take over. If their loyalty is to Clinton specifically then it's probably not as simple.

The only possible candidates in 2020 are going to be younger, progressive Dems. All the viable Baby Boomer "establishment" centrists will be too old. Therefore it's stupid to worry about "neutralizing" Bernie Sanders (because he'll probably love the eventual nominee) and also stupid to worry about getting rid of the establishment, because the future begins to progressives–– starting this year with Ellison.

Seriously, who should progressives worry about? Schumer 2020? Who's the "establishment" pick to be afraid of?

If we learn ONE loving thing from this election is that Democrats shouldn't spend more energy ripping apart other Democrats than they do ripping apart Republicans. It got too ugly and negative in the primaries this year; it would have damaged the eventual nominee either way, and that should never be repeated.

I think we shouldn't be too comfortable with the idea that the establishment is too old and will just roll over. They could very well nominate someone like Cory Booker. Plenty of Clinton supporters would also champion her again for 2020 because a) the margins were very narrow so of course she could win if she tried harder! Google your local Democratic party (town or county) and start going to meetings. If you attend regularly and speak up you acquire power, especially if you bring a group of friends with you. But before you do, you should ditch the anti-unity bullshit.

Democrats can suck, too, but a sucky Democrat is a billion times better than a good Republican in this era. For example, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) is supposed to be "one of the good ones" and she's still worse than the worst Democrat. Go ahead, name the best Republican and worst Democrat you can think of, and compare their records.

Oh, no, Cory Booker! He likes the idea of charter schools and doesn't completely loving hate the banks, he might as well be a Republican!

I was a field organizer for Hillary, I can tell you with a high level of confidence that her most diehard fans and ground-level advocates don't want her to run again and aren't even considering the possibility. Unless we work hard to oust them, there are still plenty of Clinton cronies in power who could theoretically put her up for the position again. This is why we really need to push hard on getting Ellison for DNC chair so we can make progress on dismantling the old neoliberal machine that failed.

I could be totally wrong here, and Clinton might just want to be politics Bigfoot forever on hikes in the woods. More realistically, people like Booker are the more likely threat.
