In Poland news, PiS is in the process of passing a law that will restrict public assembly for non government/non church marches or protests. The new law introduces a four stage hierarchy of importance in granting permissions to march and or protest. The most important and those that take precedence over all others are marches or protests or public meetings organized by the government or the Catholic church. Second in the hierarchy are so called circuitous assemblies/marches, i.e. those occurring regularly on fixed dates. Third are normal non government/church gatherings and fourth are spontaneous protests/gatherings. The new law also says that two groups cannot be given permission to march/gather in the same place at the same time. The old law was essentially first come first serve with everyone given equal rights and which allowed for multiple gatherings in the same place. How this new law will work is essentially this: Say you want to organize a gay pride parade. You go get your permits and declare the time and place you want to march well in advance. The day before the parade is supposed to take place the local church declares that they want to march in the same place and at the same time in a pro-traditional family march. The gay pride parade now has to be cancelled by law because the church march is 1st in the hierarchy whereas the gay rights is third and since they both want the same place and time the church gets it. Clever little authoritarians.

What I hope people do is start organising gay pride parades every week to exhaust resources.

Another fun thing they're doing is initiating "investigations" into mayors of large cities they don't control. Nearly every non-PiS mayor of a major city is in the crosshairs of the Central Anticorruption Agency and there are open investigations against all of them. They're also trying to discredit and imprison former Solidarity heroes like Jozef Pinior who was arrested this week also on (very likely) trumped up corruption charges if they have been supporting and protecting Walesa instead of denouncing his as a communist agent and pretending that the Duckman brothers are the real heroes of Solidarity.

Also they're screwing with the tax free income limits and have raised it from 3700 zl to over 6000... but only for people making less than 11,000 zl a year which is well below the poverty line. Of course they raised it to 30,000 zl for MPs and when asked about the discrepancy justified it by saying MPs deserve it because they work very hard. :downs:

I only used gay parades as an example because its probably a strategy the church will use going forward, but there are even more malevolent ways to use this new law. For instance, spontaneous or planned demonstrations against government malfeasance can be legally outlawed at any time by quickly getting 10 people together and saying its a government sanctioned public gathering that happens to be taking place at the same place and time. They can use it to shut down groups like KOD or Black Protest or essentially any opposition because now they always have preference and can designate anything a government sponsored march.

How is the EU going to react to this? It's a pretty big step towards abolishing freedom of assembly completely.

I'm sure the EU will react negatively and PiS will tell them to gently caress off because "muh sovereignty" and PiS' electorate will look like that meme of the ecstatic guy because they told those Eurofaggots to gently caress off and their support will rise 5 points.

It was extremely cool when, after cheering on the dismembering of Greece, the EE states got a dose of it when they threw a tantrum about brown people and Germany threatened to withhold EU money if they didn't take refugees in.

The problem is that if you give the EU the authority to enforce basic human rights like freedom of assembly, they could one day abuse this power to enforce the human rights of brown people.

Half of Europe steered hard right lately. Sanctions against Poland and Hungary won't have any effect on those countries' ruling parties, maybe except turning them away from the idea of some common liberal EU mindset.

The duckman is smart enough to realize that the EU is completely toothless and he can do what he wants and they won't do poo poo about because Hungary has veto power over any real meaningful sanctions and Duckman and Orban already promised each other to veto any attempts by the EU to curtail or punish them. And you're right, they'll just play it up for more anti western propaganda of evil gay germans and drug addled dutch trying to impose their degenerate will on plucky little Catholic Poland.

Can we seriously just give hungary and poland a choice between being in soviet union 2.0 or being a western democracy? Like, these are your two options, either stop sliding towards a putin-style dictatorship or we'll toss you in with your own kind?

Attach the sanctions to the government responsible, make it clear you'll happily remove them as soon as said government are gone. Do Poland and Hungary have fixed term limits? if not they'll have a serious problem on their hands.

Can't be tied to government. No institution should have the authority to interfere in selecting a country's representatives. If anything, any sanctions must be tied to specific laws and policies in violation of international treaties.

There are limits for president, but he's mainly representative. As for parliament there's still 3 years but the polls of lovely right wing rag (Gazeta Polska) give PiS 34%, while PO and Nowoczesna have 36% combined. A lot of people wake up to see the lovely state the country turns out. Who knows, maybe there will even be earlier elections.. Now if only 2016 would claim Duckman..
