here's one of he street fights I posted about. This old lady is about half a second away from hitting this smug looking dude while those women wigged out at each other and the guy

The fight spilled out onto the street and a lady left her father in a wheelchair facing traffic to continue fighting. 5,000 years of diplomacy and caring for the elderly

There was a goon meet at Beertopia in Hong Kong and I met like 10 goons this weekend and everyone was so nice and cool and fun. Hong Kong is amazing and everyone should go there at least once in their lives

Went to ocean park. Was so clean and nice and across the second part of it there were no lines and it was quiet. We heard there was a panda, wanted to see it, and couldn't get closer than this because everyone was screaming in mandarin about pushing us to pretend to hold up the panda while it lazily sat there eating some dumb food

This is all I have on my iPad right now, hang on I'll post a few more shots from my computer

Apart from the clichéd "two people fighting in the middle of a battle and nobody disturbs them for 10 minutes" segment, it was really good and highlighted some of the atrocities on both sides of the conflict. "Northern Limit Line" is also a good movie based on actual events that had pretty decent production values as well.

My favorite Chinese action movie that takes place in the past is "let the bullets fly" because there's seemingly nothing political or shoehorned in, despite it being a plot about banditry and corruption. It also has Chow Yun Fat, my favorite actor.

this was the street fight where the guy was shoving receipts down the old guy's throat and slapped him with his hat. it was great, so intense. i didn't want to get too close because i obviously attract a lot of attention and this dude and his buddies were PISSED

another shot of it

one of our 5 star malls in tianjin, its a great place to go to because if you ever feel tired you can just go to a hallway and pass out and have a nice long rest. i don't come from a culture where people need three naps a day so i find this incredibly strange, but my old roommate from spain said it was normal to nap every day. he also found it strange that you can just lay down on the sidewalk or in a mall and sleep for an hour, though. idk

move to the city center, buy a car. it's so convenient, do you know?

red? green? eh, who cares?

Coworker in Shenyang had to run for his life (wallet) because he walked through an intersection that had a car vs pedestrian accident and the mid-40's guy who was claiming to be hurt got up off the ground ran into him, then did a "soccer fall" and started screaming that the foreigner hurt his leg. He stood there like a deer in headlights for about 10 seconds, then booked it when he noticed that people started filming him and making a circle around him to prevent him from going. Luckily for him he managed to break out of the circle and ran a few blocks and hailed a cab that took him to his school. For the next few days he was scouring the news, expecting to see his photo and instructions to contact the police if anyone spotted him. (never happened).

The closest I got to being in a similar situation was an old lady getting her grocery cart (the two wheeled ones they walk along the street) knocked over by a bike, then falling to the ground while wailing, seeing that the bike was long gone, then looking around for someone close by to blame instead. I did an instant 180, put my head down and kept walking.

I've seen maybe 2 street fights my entire life and I live downtown in a city with a massive homeless and drug problem. One was some drunk suburban bro's fighting outside of a club, one was two hobos fighting over begging turf plus mental illness.

How are they fighting so much in China? Don't they have 5,000 years of dense city living culture to have adapted to this poo poo by now? Most big cities and densely populated countries end up developing cultures around minimizing the conflicts that such densities of people can bring. Crazy poo poo like keeping right on sidewalks and escalators, queuing, not brawling in the middle of the street, or just following some basic laws and social norms that make life a little less horrible for everyone.

That all flies out the window with entitlement and face culture.

Move out of the way on a busy street? <face lost>
Allow others to pass on an escalator (why are they in such a hurry? they think they are better than me?)
You hit someone with your bike? <face lost> (better scream at them to regain some face)
To people reach for the same can in a grocery store? (there are many more exact same cans, but if I give up that one, I lose face)
Your child is hitting another one with sticks in the playground? <face gained>
Your child is getting hit by another child with a stick in the playground <face lost> (better start screaming)
Someone yells at you because your child is hitting their with a stick? <face lost> (better start screaming)

If there is anything you take away from this thread, it's that "face culture" is a toxic stew of retardation that is holding China back in so many ways.

Tried to find out more about face culture and I liked this story

quote:

Here’s a personal example: A local youth group invited a few English teachers to participate in a series of games to celebrate the end of the term.

Everyone in the activity was split into different groups. There was a team made up of teenage students, a team of foreign English teachers, a parents team, and a team of Chinese teachers.

Everything started out lighthearted. And each team took turns winning at a variety of relay races.

But during one event, everything quickly changed.

One of the last races required the teams to use chopsticks to carry a ping-pong ball across the finish line. Players had to switch the ball from player to player, but they were not allowed to touch or drop the ball.

The other teams laughed at the idea of us foreigners even having a chance to win at the event.

We decided we would focus and show just how good our chopstick skills were.

The race began and our team quickly went into the lead. After the first two switches, we knew that our team of foreigners was going to win by a long distance.

Soon, all the good-natured laughter had stopped.

The other teams weren't even cheering anymore.

Unfortunately, we didn’t notice the lack of excitement until after we crossed the finish line.

The other teams vied for second place in awkward silence.

After the race, some of the students congratulated us. But none of the parents or Chinese teachers would even look in our direction.

A student finally told us that we had caused the adults to lose face by not just winning, but also by defeating them by such a large margin.

I asked why it mattered, as we had won a different competition before.

The student explained that we weren’t supposed to be good at using chopsticks, because that was a Chinese skill.

The biggest difference between China and the West is that in China you're not supposed to get involved in other people's business. (This is of course abused massively PRN to meddle when you want by declaring certain things to be within your purview since time immemorial and therefore you are the interloper gwailo, but that's a special application.) The way fights start in China is two people are doing something really loving stupid that will obviously cause them to try to occupy the same space at the same time or else both will arrive to some immaterial claim at the same time to the same thing. Because they both have supreme jurisdiction in this case (as in everything they do) they other person must submit to them or else they have lost not just the right to drive their three wheel motorized trike on the sidewalk head on into another person doing the same but in the opposite direction, but their foundational existence as a person has been reduced through this assault on dominion.

By framing every conflict as an assault on what is rightfully yours things get hilariously personal.

I was told in Harbin that part of the reason so many large military transports and city buses were involved in traffic accidents was because the drivers of them were driving larger vehicles, and therefore were better drivers, and therefore people would generally side with them should there be a collision, and therefore they regularly plowed their dozen ton death machines into traffic circles at 30+ mph expecting everyone else to be monitoring their rear view mirror and get out of the way.

The real reason is that despite driving a 10 ton truck or bus for more than a day, the drivers still don't understand that they have a shitload more momentum and require more stopping space than the compact car they drive at home. Also large vehicles require ongoing and expert maintenance to keep their brakes in working order. Two things that they are not likely to receive. Pretty much every truck collision (where the truck is at fault) caught on film coming out of China is one of four scenarios.

1. Truck diver decides to hit the brake 3m from a stopped car while going 70kph, and is shocked to find he can't stop in time.
2. Truck driver hits the brakes too late (or at a reasonable distance) and finds that they are not working.
3. Truck driver hauling a 200% maximum load in his dump truck hits the brakes and they instantly fail for some inexplicable reason.
4. Truck driver hauling a 200% maximum load in his dump truck hits the brakes and the truck doesn't slow down like it normally does for some inexplicable reason.

Here's another thing I don't get about China, or more about the rest of the world. How come everyone keeps conducting diplomacy and business deals with the chinese government and firms as if they were western institutions and getting shocked every time they're totally hosed over or china does the most petty short sighted poo poo? "Oh they'd never screw us over on this on this minor thing, we both want a long term relationship and it's in both our interests..." NOPE. They will happily gently caress them selves out of millions of dollars in long term business if they can gently caress you over for a few thousand today. And it's not just about the short term gain, it's like in the business world you lose face for not loving someone over the moment you see the smallest opening.

"Well this western company says they want a 10 year metal fabrication contract, that would keep my company in business and growing for a decade and make me rich, BUT they didn't send an engineer over the watch the work this month so I'd lose massive face if I didn't replace the structural steel they ordered with this scap iron we found out back, thus saving us a few thousand dollars. Surely they won't ever do business with us again, but I'd look weak and lose face for not jumping at this chance to screw over a valued client, oh well I have no choice..."
