I'm sure this, of all threads, can come up with the perfect solution to this problem. I'll start: a pair of small anchors deployed from the back corners of the vehicle by an Extra-Emergency Brake.

Then the dollies on the front wheels disintegrated and people ran in all directions because no one want to lose a foot to an idiot's dumb idea to move a 6,000 LB piece of heavy machinery with furniture movers tools. As someone who drove a forklift for years, could they not just barely lift it off the ground and move it where it needed to go? Or was it one of those tiny forklifts?

Eventually they do I'm in Flagstaff, AZ, and between November and March, you get average lows of around 15 degrees F and about 100 inches of snow. Due to the high daily temperature altitude, snow melts and refreezes daily, yielding especially challenging situations throughout the entire winter. And still, people up here don't have winter tires and smugly tell you about their all season tires, because "loving duh, it says 'all season' right there in the name, dummy!".

They are anything but. They should be illegal. This is of course coming from someone who lives in a place where November all through March is solid winter tire driving conditions. I have a lot of experience driving in slippery conditions, I drive a proper 4WD and I use studded tires, but still I drive carefully because on the ice, a momentary carelessness buys you a face-to-face with a semi in the opposite lane. I totally get that most of the US doesn't have more than a few weeks or days of snow driving, but if you at al are in a situation where you positively have to drive somewhere, why not just bite the drat bullet and get snow tires just so you don't gamble with your life or someone else's life? Bip Roberts posted:Aren't all season tires just normal tires? Depends on your definition of "normal". All season tires don't handle hydroplaning nearly as well as summer tires, don't grip as well and don't brake as well. In winter, all season tires cannot do two things: Drive on snow, or drive on ice. And that's really the main problem. Tire manufacturers try to sell them on convenience but for liability's sake warn against using them in "extreme conditions" such as, you know, extreme light snow cover or extreme slight layers of ice. Luckily that never happens in winter. It's unconscionable. You won't know how unsuitable these tires are until you're already sliding off the road and into a tree.

All season tires are bullshit. Couple of years ago I was merrily driving home one night. It's been raining the whole day, then temperature fell below zero, everything froze and it started snowing. I had winter tires on front wheels and all-seasons on back wheels, which was pretty common occurence here in Serbia, beacuse law at the time was that you have to have winter tires on drive wheels only (thankfully, that has changed to "have winter tires on all wheels between november and april). I drove at betweem 40 and 50 km/h and hit a hole in the road or something, and next thing I know I was in the ditch next to the road. Somehow, luckily, I missed lamp post and traffic sign, and spun 180 so i flew into the ditch rear end first. It was about a meter-and-something deep, and luckily full of snow, so the only damage was cracked bumper. Altough it wasn't easy pulling the car out, because the van pulling me out had barely enough traction on frozen road, we did it and I drove back home. Tomorrow when I got out of bed it dawned upon me how easily I could have died that night, and how insanely lucky I was. I threw away all season tires and never thought about them again. Funny thing is, now it's almost impossible to buy all season tires here

The alternative is mandating that everybody buy snow tires, put them on in [say]December, and take them off in [say] April, which would be wildly unpopular in places that get snow for three or four days a year. As far as I know, winter tires do not just help with snow, but they use a different rubber mixture and tire profile, which means they perform better in colder temperatures, so even if you do not get any snow, they would probably still be a sensible investment if it gets cold at all where people live and drive. It probably doesn't help that many people call them "snow tires" rather than simply winter tires. After all, why would I need snow tires if it never snows?! Tricky D posted:I live in Florida so you guys will have to forgive my ignorance, but is there a reason to not just leave your snow tires on all year round if you don't have much money and live in a place where it is likely to snow? The studs will wear down the road. The studless ones are complete poo poo. The rubber in both the studded and studless ones is soft so the tyres themselves will wear down a lot when there's no snow or ice. Poor people like me sometimes just use a screw driver to take the studs out of old winter tyres and hey presto new summer tyres!

^ also that for studded tires. It's mandatory to get studded tires removed in spring in many regions. They gently caress up roads pretty bad.Tricky D posted:I live in Florida so you guys will have to forgive my ignorance, but is there a reason to not just leave your snow tires on all year round if you don't have much money and live in a place where it is likely to snow? Because they're made of different rubber compounds they lose traction and wear faster in warmer temperatures. There are all-season tires, though, which are graded for snow and mud but not nearly as good as dedicated winter tires.

Yeah, wear and tear, you'll cause tires to become brittle due to the aforementioned cold-weather designed rubber, and they hydroplane like a surfboard. If I were you I'd invest in a boat anyway.

Their traction is poorer in summer conditions and you'll get increased fuel consumption over using summer tires, but sure, you could use them in all seasons and it would be safer than using summer tires in winter. E: beaten.
