I use Costco for my car rentals. I just book whenever I plan the rest of the trip, and I keep looking at prices up until I leave since I can just cancel and re-book anytime.

Depends on how close to red rock. (Casino or park?)

Echo & Rig at Tivoli Village is probably your best bet if you don't need to be walking distance to the casino.

Another question, is there any difference between staying on the strip/downtown in terms of accessibility by car? I've heard it can be a pain to get to hotels on the strip, is that the case, downtown (golden nugget probably) as well?

Imo while I'm all about walking (or just being drunk in Vegas), driving a car on and around the strip is really no hassle at all unless you're just afraid of traffic/pedestrians. If you've driven downtown in a major city you'll be fine. Every casino has giant shopping-mall sized parking ramps to accomodate all of the people who drive from California/elsewhere. If they don't, they'll have a valet. On a good chunk of the strip the pedestrians are crossing via bridge so they aren't even that much of an issue. Just follow signs and you'll be OK. It's a western American city, it was designed for cars.

According to the website, all these cars have paddle shifters, so you don't have to use the clutch, which is the hard part of driving a manual.

Hearthstone and the Mexican place at red rock are both good. Public school and grape street at downtown summerlin (connected to the casino) are also good, none of these are a steakhouse though.

Yeah, they're all flappy paddle shift, and your driving instructor will tell you exactly when to shift up or down, and when to brake, when to gun it, etc.

Roos and More is getting shut down by the county. Apparently it is some kind of death camp for animals and the county revoked their permits. They are supposedly open through December 31st for anyone who already has tickets, but it would probably be weird to go at this point.

You can watch the meeting here if you're curious, starts about about 11 minutes in: http://clark.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=17&clip_id=5082

Our tickets are for this weekend so we're still going to go. They just called me to let me know that they were still open for the next couple of weekends and they said we can take the private tour for free, in addition to our scheduled sloth meet n greet :confuoot:

Yes, it has been discussed. Because one club is doing once a week it does not make the case that is a sustainable model to have winter time pool parties during the slowest months of the year at every or multiple hotels.

Roos-n-more was super fun! They took everyone who showed up on an extended private tour, so we got to go in the pens and pet all the animals, meet the otter, sloth, etc. The sloth was unsurprisingly the highlight for everyone I think, and it was nice of the staff to take the time to let everyone hold him for a couple of minutes, even the little kids. I didn't see any dead animals or anything and the tour guide said it was an issue of residential versus commercial permits, but who knows. It sounds like they are going to rehome most of the animals and instead do more of an animal outreach thing for the local schools, so they'll be around in some capacity.

FWIW, Vegas in December is the best and we do it every year. It's not hot and it's easier to get around without that oppressive crush of people wherever you go.

I do Vegas for Christmas every year. It's definitely slower, but it's still Vegas. Vegas at its deadest time still has more going on than many cities at their busiest times.

Hotels are cheaper, shows are cheaper, it's easier to get around, and the table limits are lower, so that's cool. I don't do much clubbing, but it seems like stuff is still going on.

I'm going this weekend and I went this weekend last year.

It's loving awesome. About 10-20 of my buddies and I get together for cheap flights and cheap hotel rooms. We'll take over a whole table gambling and can get reservations at every restaurant with a week's notice.

This year most of us are staying at the Vdara. The base room is around $100 a night and a buddy has a one bedroom penthouse for about $270 a night. And the vdara is loving nice.

Lotus of Siam was some incredible thai food. I ordered mainly the northern specialties. Specific callouts to the nam kao tod, Garlic prawns and green chili dip which were all incredible. The sausage was forgettable and the pad kee mao my friend ordered was just ok.

Did Guy Fieri's Vegas Kitchen Friday as part of a joke with friends. It's as gross as you think it is but we had a lot of fun laughing and bullshitting. We also did Chengdu Taste for dinner, which was loving awesome.

And Jay, you were right, Harvest was just ok.

Trip Report: 4 days in Vegas with a 7-year-old.

Drove to Vegas. Stopped at my favorite burger place, Appollo Burger in Victorville. Service is never very good and they do it all from scratch so it takes forever, but nice to get out of the car and stretch the legs, and the food is off-the-charts unbelievable. 8/10.

Stayed at Signature at MGM Grand. Got a 1BR suite for 4 nights for an unbelievable price. This is my favorite "secret" place to stay. On one of the slowest weeks of the year I think I could have gotten a comparable deal staying at any of my favorite "big name" places (Aria, Wynn, etc), but in the 1BR we had a full kitchen and it saved us a bundle on breakfasts and lunches. 8/10

Hit the Christmas lights and the self-guided tour at Ethel M Chocolate Factory. Expected it to be mayhem on a Saturday night, it was in fact mayhem, that said, found a parking place no problem, got right in, lights and plants were amazing, tour was decent, chocolate was absurdly overpriced, but scored a couple of samples and bounced in an hour. 8/10.

Pinball Hall-of-fame, I know it's dorky and understated but it's just so drat genuine, this is my favorite attraction in any city in the US, there is nowhere to get a better bang out of a $10 roll of quarters. Lost the daughter for an hour and only found her when she needed more quarters. 10/10

Neon Museum, got the 5pm tour right at dusk. Tour guide was great and had a ton of knowledge, there was nothing she didn't know. We had a super understated group and so she really had to work for it, but she did. Only 6 or 8 of their 100 signs light up, which is underwhelming for a place called the "neon museum", but so much cool history there. 7 year old thought it was the lamest thing in the world until the tour guide told her that if she could find a sign of every letter of her name that she'd get a sticker at the end of the tour. Achievement: unlocked. Kid was occupied. 8/10.

Ate dinner at Carson Kitchen downtown. Waiter was underwhelmed to see a 7 year old. Food was good though. 7/10.

Fremont street after dinner. Seems like the overhead video shows look more and more like an 80's video game with each passing year. 6/10.

Groupon for KISS Monster Mini Golf at the Rio. Great theming. Staff was unbelievably friendly. I am a guy who never thinks service is very good, and this place was really top notch. 9/10.

Groupon for Nat'l Atomic Testing Museum. Totally interesting, but I'm a physics nerd. Really well done museum. Came with free admission to the Area 51 exhibit, which seemed to be done with posterboard and day-glo orange markers. I've never seen such a lovely exhibit. 7/10

Red Rock Canyon, $7 for the car, spent an hour or two here, it's stunning. I could easily spend a half day or day here hiking and hanging out (if it weren't bitter cold). This goes with the pinball museum on my list of vegas must-sees if you have wheels. Way better than the Hoover Dam. 9/10.

Swung through Red Rock Casino (on the way out of the park) for an $8.99 buffet lunch. Love eating one buffet while in Vegas and was dreading paying $25/head for the three of us. I did not feel like Red Rock was any worse than any of the grandiose buffets on the strip, and I saved 70%. 8/10

It was somebody here who turned me on to Nathan Burton Comedy Magic. Groupon was running a deal for $12 tickets but I've been shafted by the groupon thing before, and I'd found a box office deal at around $20/seat, so I booked direct. Show was about 90 minutes, Nathan is really good. All his magic centers around making a girl disappear out of a box, making a girl disappear out of a car, sawing a girl in half and her disappearing... you get the idea. The whole point here was to stun the 7 year old who is really into magic, but she was only mildly amused (mom was completely disinterested), however I was enthrawled and 3rd row center was just the perfect place to sit. He had a couple other tricks as well, but the show was heavy on girls disappearing. It was truly amazing, in a "how'd he do that?" kind of way, just repetitive. 8/10

Snuck out after kid bedtime Wednesday night and visited the craps tables at Paris. $10 min, I managed to drink three gin & tonics and lose a hundred bucks over about an hour. Expensive drinks, but couldn't come to town and not gamble a little.

Ate breakfast on the way out of town at a no-name place with great yelp reviews, "Diner at LVM resort", turns out LVM is a retirement RV park of some sort, we were totally freaked out, but we pressed on... chicken fried steak from scratch, the pancakes were freakin' huge, and the old folks thought the 7 year old was beyond adorable. 8/10

Rained on the way home, traffic was terrible. Can't win 'em all!

Never had a trip to Vegas quite like this. That said, it's totally possible to fill 4 days with kid friendly stuff and still have a great time. 8/10 trip, would return.

Thinking of heading down in mid February from Canada for five days. Some questions:

One of my pals is a vegetarian. Are there good places for that in particular that cater to this? Usually Asian places are easy for this.

Thinking of going to the Grand Canyon for a day. Is doing one of the tours just easier or is renting a car and doing it on your own possible/worthwhile? Sorry if this was covered, I read back through 20 pages.

It seems like the general consensus is to stay downtown and venture to the strip at night to see a few cool things. Is that fair to say?

Will paying it forward with the immediate palmed $20 to the hotel staff really work if we're only staying 5 days and don't really plan on coming back? or is it just a good karma thing that will one day even itself out? I dont mind tipping or greasing the wheels but sometimes I'm not the most graceful at it/unsure how to infer that quid pro quo

Where's the best value place to shoot guns?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the good info I've read so far. It really helps with the planning. GoonsOwn

It's definitely possible, and worthwhile. The only question is if you want to make the drive yourself or pay someone else to take you (or fly you, if you do the helicopter tour).

You'll definitely get a better value staying downtown, and you can Uber or drive to the strip. But don't walk.

The $20 is typically given to the staff to see if there are any "complimentary upgrades" they can offer. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Just sandwich the $20 between your ID and credit card when you hand it to the staff. Check http://www.thetwentydollartrick.com for more information.

If you are only going to see Vegas once in your life, stay at one of the big name hotels on the strip. If you are staying on weekdays in February, you will find plenty of deals. Downtown is a one-night thing, once you've been there, you've seen it. The strip is huge, you could kill a week there.

Everybody knows what the deal is. It's a $20 gamble. I have had it pay off a lot, and in spades. I would make a huge show about how amazing Vegas is and how amazing this hotel is and how nothing in Canada is like this and oh by the way are there any upgrades? As said before, just hand a $20 inbetween ID and credit card.

Seconded. Downtown is cool, but the strip is bigger and you're probably going to spend more time there. Yeah, it's a little cheaper downtown, but it's still pretty darn cheap on the strip.

Yes vegetarian dishes are probably on every menu in every restaurant.

Downtown sucks and the extra money you'll "save" on a room will be spent on transport to and from the strip. Stay on the strip.

Yes.

None of them are good value really but Range 702 is probably the nicest facility.

It seems like the good resorts for our situation would be The Wynn, MGM Grand, or the Palazzo? I've found a pretty decent deal on the Palazzo. Should I rent a car at the airport/resort or rely on Uber if we want to tour a few of the big casinos on the strip?
