D4D keeps track of your score and gives you upgrade medals based on your total number of kills in a level, if that counts!

Skulldash is a speed-running coin collect-a-thon with level progression from a central hub like Stronghold. Arcade style but not exactly score based. 100%ing each level requires finding all the coins/secrets within a time limit and exiting the level.

I am playing Black Mesa Source and completely forgot how dull are the segments after waking up in trash compactor. I believe one of the mapper has to work in some waste processing unit because the whole level is so dedicated to swimming in sewage and walking on catwalks, I literally want to be shot by marines to cease this industrial nightmare. On the other hand, I got myself a tiny rocket launcher: and Prima's "unofficial" guide to Build.

I've made two photos, hopefully showing more detail: As you can probably see, the inside of the barrel is kinda dodgy, but otherwise I think it looks fine. I don't have much of a comparison, except this nifty Doom logo, also printed at the same place:

Wow, apparently DOOM '16 got its weird DRM removed with a patch. Now it doesn't need to be reactivated online every few weeks or so! According to Neogaf, anyway. On the other hand, after patches it's now an 80gb download

The new Arcane Dimensions maps are real good, though I feel like the snow map must have been released before under a different name because I definitely remembered playing the tower of planks section at some point, but with a vore throwing poo poo at me. Decent mix of gently caress huge labyrinths with hundreds of enemies and dozens of secrets and slightly more restrained stuff. If you've been holding off on playing AD, definitely give it a whirl.

I've only played a few of the maps, but those I have, have been very well out together. A common "theme" seems to be revisiting previous areas, without it being simple backtracking. It's been very dynamic with areas changing forms and interconnecting in interesting ways. I really enjoy when a map ends up feeling like a whole place, rather than just a linear series of hallways and rooms. I spent 90 minutes across two evenings exploring, getting lost/stuck in, and finally completing, the Swampy map. Very strongly recommend checking that one out.

It's a really impressive piece of work but just goes on and on and on, and I don't think backtracking to find the tomes is particularly fun. I think a big problem with it is that it doesn't have a great sense of progression compared to other gigantic maps. Like if you compare it to Illusions Outnumber Changes In Fortune from mapjam6, from the start of that level you can figure out where you're headed and get a feel for your progress from any point in the level because it's right above you. I will say this for it though, the secrets are reasonably well hidden without being way too obscure -- I finished with about 20/25 which is way better than usual for me.

As probably everyone already knows, during industry wankfest called The Games Awards Mick Gordon played some music from Doom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a9E3n_VZRQ Eagle eyed viewers may notice, that the drummer present is Matt Halpern from band Periphery and a collaborator of Sascha Dikiciyan, a.k.a. Sonic Mayhem, a.k.a. dude behind music in Quake 2 and 3 (and also apparently weapon sound effects in UT and Unreal Gold?). Which reminded me how Dikciyan first got into this whole game-music-making business - he made an "alternative" soundtrack for the first Quake, which he sent to id Software, and Romero liked it enough to employ Sonic Mayhem for scoring the sequel. Yes, that was late in Romero's reign in id. But let's get back to "Methods of Destruction", the name of the alternate Quake soundtrack. It's more metalish and rhythmic than Reznor's industrial ambient soundscapes, but actually not that much different mood-wise and I think it has aged pretty bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=po474vV5fnU I dunno, maybe it works better in-game. The whole thing was pretty much ephemeral for many years, as the CD was manufactured in limited numbers and seemingly there was no complete rip, until somewhere in 2012, John Romero himself sent the mp3s to Steam user AHadley, who then shared it with others... only to remove it two days later when he learned that Sonic Mayhem really counts "Methods of Destruction" as an old shame and doesn't want it to be published. Thankfully, one Kevin Sartori grabbed the archive, cleaned it a little bit, and convinced Dikciyan to release it on his blogspot (http://p-l-m.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/sonic-mayhem-methods-of-destruction.html). So, here's a little, obscure bit of shootman lore preserved!

Considering how World Tour is a mutation of an old eduke32 version, and it has some problems with loading new assets when they are needed (like HUD weaponsprites in HRP). Too bad it didn't freeze just right after you were in air, so it would look like Duke's going to pull out "Yikes!" sign like Wile E. Coyote.

I believe it's moving towards/along the wall sufficiently fast that he would be within grabbing distance of the key, if the wall wasn't in the way. It then happens that the "grab items" stage happens before the "would be inside walls" check keeps him on the same side of the wall.
