"Heya Vladimir."

"Huh?"

"Howya doing Vlady? Wanna join XCOM?"

"My mommy told me not to talk to strangers."

"Ooooh, very wise. I am Bradford, Central command of XCOM, the Alien resistance organization. And you are Vladimir Lebedev, our newest XCOM recruit. Now we're not strangers."

"I should go."

"But Vlady, don't you want a nice, warm bed?"

"A warm bed? Does it float?"

"Oh, they float Vlady. They all FLOAT here."

I hadn't played since the Hunters pack released, and I wasn't too impressed at first with spending 6 days to get some unique guns. Then I one-shotted a Sectoid and changed my mind.

Have to remember to turn off Anarchy's Children customization though. I don't know what possessed my recruits to start wearing shorts into the Arctic Circle, but they're in buzzcuts and fatigues until they start making good decisions with their clothing.

edit: the first Hunters mission crashes the game and I don't feel like loving with my mods. Are there any consequences to just ignoring the Regal Beast mission for the rest of the game?

With the recent DLC sale I re-started XCOM2 for the first time since I finished it on release. I have this bug where changing the keybinding doesn't save - when I restart the game they are back to default. It seems that people randomly run into that problem. Is there a known fix?

I have a bunch of mods (Capnbubs Accessories Pack, Flank Preview, that sort of things, nothing that should be related to keybindings) so I'll check if the problem persists without them. Was mostly wondering if there's an easy fix.

Yup, ive had this problem. I have a workaround, its awkward.

Start the game without any mods loaded, I know your mods are not related to keybinds. Do it anyway. Assign the key you wish to change to a Different Action, now assign it to the correct one, say yes to the dialogue box. Repeat for further keybinds. Save and quit.

It should now be working and not disapear on you again.

If I'm understanding you right, you get a crash for the investigation mission that pops up after you've acquired the weapons?

If you never do this mission, then you'll never run into the Alien Leaders in a mission. This is a shame, because they are very interesting to fight and force you to change up your tactics. This is also good, because if they appear in a mission where you're struggling, they will turn your poo poo inside out.

So assign the key twice, once to the "wrong" action and then to the "right" one? Will definitively try this when I'm back home. Thanks!

Yeah, I don't know why that works either. Or what loading without mods changes. Got it from a steam forum post somewhere. Found it again.

You also won't be able to upgrade your alien guns past level 1. Though you could just not do the mission. That won't let you time when the alien rulers appear (they'll just show up) but you'll get the upgrades. A bit of a shame since the Nest is great for farming and lets you get some nice hits on Snakedick.

Thanks for the info! And yes, I was getting a crash on the investigation mission. Happened every time I clicked "press any key".

On the other hand, I played through the Shen mission instead and it seemed real bad. I assume I should have probably waited for gun upgrades, but it popped up so early I thought it'd be fine. All that pain for a discount cyborg! I do give the writers credit for sticking with the gimmick for a solid 10 minutes after the player has figured out what's going on. I'm pretty sure Bradford's still trying to piece it together!

The Tower is an excellent map...to play once. Good writing, some good feels, it's kind of a slog if you repeat it and know what's coming up. And yeah, it really is balanced around magnetic weapons. Oh and you don't get poo poo besides a free/early Spark and Exp. You don't even get any X-dollars or alloys out it.

The Nest is kinda average, but isn't a slog. It plays a lot like an old XCOM mission until you get to the boss. Only with hilarious amounts of chaff in it that are, well, chaff (I think the neophyte sneks have a negative defense modifier) and minimal threat. Great for leveling up dudes, and you at least get to carry the corpse of any adult sneks home. And the Snek King IF you manage to kill him. Oh and excellent writing. The whole theme of the writing in Alien Hunters is "We made Fanon Vahlen Canon", especially with Tygan's autopsy reports on the alien rulers which are basically "WHY!? Just...WHY!?"

If I'm getting back into XCOM and want to use ABA2, squadsize 6-8, and Grimy's loot mod, should I use the LWPP by default or a mod like the Shadow Ops or Paragon perk packs? Also, are there any class overhaul mods that bring Sparks in-line with the LWPP classes?

e: Also, I installed the above mods + required add-ons and now I can't see the fog of war in Gatecrasher. Its still there and aliens vanish when they walk into it, but I can't see where it is. Any ideas?

It helps that the neophyte sneks have 2 HP and a negative defense modifier. When an enemy has -15 to dodging your blade it helped even the pre-patch knife shine against it, and when it has 2 HP that reaper train can keep going and going and going...

I feel like reaper can be quite useful as a mobility tool, as in if you have almost wiped out a pod but you need to keep on moving, then you can just use reaper to kill the last enemy and then have a full move to catch up your ranger with your squad.

I found the issue with those crashes, which is that I'm dumb. I verified the game cache, steam redownloaded 1.7 gigs, and now everything's working fine. Unfortunately, my next mission is a Difficult mission named Operation Death Claw and it's in California.

Watch out for berserkers I guess. :D

But yeah, the gunslinger is actually really pretty good, though pretty situational, being able to fire up to 5 or 6 times in a turn is great, particularly once you get the plasma weapons. The blade ranger suffers from that as well, but getting a kill because a viper tried the grab your guy is very satisfying.

Something that's been rattling about in my brain for a while that I'm just going to put out there. I wish your invasion veteran troops got more unique stuff to set them apart from the new guys. Specifically I thought that it would be cool if, once you get a squad armour upgrade you then got a signal from an old Xcom base or something that gave you a set of armour from the previous game of the appropriate tier, even if they had to do things like say the Archangel armour's flight ability had been irreparably damaged so Shen welded a grappling hook onto it.

Being able to hit *every* enemy you see is situational?

Gunslinger is just so good that I really don't see why you'd ever go the other route. Being able to dish out multiple points of damage in a single turn allows you to engage with and kill multiple pods is stunningly good. If you really want to be cheesy, three gunslinger snipers would probably the ultimate cheesy strat. If armor didn't exist in this game, there'd be no other reason to use anything except gunslingers.

I have admittedly never loaded up my team with a single class but for me Faceoff is really only that powerful if you have shredded the enemy armour, split a bunch of Codex's or are in the ambush part of the Alien hunters mission and have plasma weapons and the appropriate special ammunition. Admittedly you can really ruin a Muton or Gatekeeper's day early on with fan fire and AP ammo.

It's that flexibility that makes gunslingers so good - they can take out a bunch of wounded mooks or just casually set a sectopods health to half by themselves. Or snipe with their rifle :v:

AP ammo is really good on a gunslinger yeah.

Gun-spec grenadiers work obscenely well with sharpshooters. Holotargeting and Shred make their guns infinitely more useful, and Shredding Chain Shot into Bluescreen Fan Fire can kill a sectopod outright.

Though I'm biased towards gun-spec grenadiers in general. I know full well how good grenades are, but man.... archons were my bane until I started using Holotarget + Hail of Bullets as my opener every time I saw one.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Face off works better with the fire or poison ammo, in my experience. If you don't kill everyone, the aim malus at least neutralises most targets, and the tick of 1-3 extra armour piercing damage can frequently kill them during their turn.

Gunslingers are not situational at all. Remember that face-off costs you only a single AP. You can very easily do encounters where you move up, lightning reflexes shoot someone, then face-off. Or use a grapple to get close, lightning reflexes, shoot, face-off. Or even lightning reflexes, fanfire, face-off. Masses of damage out of a single turn. The grenadier grenade opener -> face off combo is a very strong one that neuters a lot of pods.

It's the opposite use of a sharpshooter, having someone hang back and hope there's a good enemy to shoot at at the beginning of your turn using both action points, that's situational. It's not going to work on many maps, and many mission types.

Also, lots of soldiers fill the role of "do a ton of damage to a single enemy". Rangers do it, gun-specced grenadiers do it, psi troopers do it... a sniper isn't bringing anything new to the table. Heck, even a gunslinger can churn out single-target damage just as well, on top of their mop-up abilities.

Serial is pretty insane on a sniper, but it's a long road to get there.

I feel the same way about the company bearing the same name.

Many soldiers fill the "do a little damage to many enemies" too. Psi, grenadiers, anyone with a gas grenade, reaper blademasters... Pistol sharpshooters and snipers both do different things really well, and excel on different missions. Have at least one of each.

I feel like I'm in an alternate universe because I have gotten more use out of Reaper than I ever had with face-off. Like by the time face-off even remotely comes into question the tactical matter has usually boiled down to "so do I want to kill these remaining ayys this way, that way, or a totally different way?" rather than it being a mission saver, whereas I've had multiple moments where a Ranger turned a bad activation into one that was much more manageable thanks to Reaper.

Do I just get insanely bad luck with how my face-off moments tend to get shot down due to all the enemies being in really good cover I can't negate that turn or something?
