Well looks like I will be on the rules committee from my district in advance of the Michigan State Convention in February. Assuming my District Chair doesn't stab me in the back and pick someone else. I don't think many other people want the job though so I should be safe. My best advice for new politigoons: be respectful as hell to everyone you meet. You never know who's important. I sat next to a guy at a state central meeting talking for an hour and only found out yesterday he was the chair of the Veterans Caucus that I had been trying to get on the phone for over a week.

If you're in California and you're trying to be an assembly district delegate, it sounds like it'd be really useful to try to get into contact with one of your local clubs. Beyond bringing your friends to vote for you, they might have a slate of delegates they tell people to vote for. Try to get in on that, if it exists. I think you'll be way more likely to be successful than if you're on your own. Assuming there are more than 14 candidates that is.

Meeting with the guy in charge of the UAW political wing today to ask his advice on how to get an amendment to the state party rules through that would provide more representation to the under 35 crowd as well as minority groups within our party structure. (Women are already guaranteed a 50/50 split of seats, so I didn't forget them!) Then I have to go pay for the venue for Friday and tell them how I want it set up. Then a job interview. Today is going to be stress city.

A quick note regarding the Kentucky Democratic Party: I have attempted to contact the state communications chair, the state head of the party and the local chairs of the Kentucky Democratic Party regarding involvement including possibly meeting with party leaders to discuss potential local or state-level candidacy. I got back a single form email from the local Democratic party asking me to sign up for the newsletter, which I did. I got two form emails asking for donations, both of which were addressed to a name other than mine. Sounds like things are really getting organized.

I wonder what trying to join the Republican party is like? Is it equally difficult, or is it more streamlined? That might explain why they've got better ground game.

My understanding of the Tea Party is that they basically ran into similar issues with the Republican Party local groups when they were getting started, and that part of their ferocity had to do with how frustrated they were because of it. The Republican Party seems a lot more responsive and open than the Democratic Party right now, and I think that's because the Tea Partiers cracked it open like ten years ago (not actually sure about the exact time frame). I don't have any quotable evidence for this, but I'd be curious if anyone has any supporting or contradictory opinions.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. Operational obscurity and intentional stonewalling of potential newcomers (and thus, potential threats to your power) is not a uniquely Democrat thing. We just have to make sure that angry Dems and progressives are mad and active enough to actually do the same thing the Tea Party did and make a hole in the wall. Speaking of being active (perfect segue, 10/10)! The Williamson County Democrat Party is having their monthly meeting tonight at 6:45 at the Allan R Baca Center, Round Rock TX. If at all possible I'm going to be donating to join and volunteering/nominating myself for the position of Precinct 160 chair, because I really don't feel like waiting an entire month for something to maybe happen. It'd be nice if I could be joined by fellow goons doing the same for their respective precincts (if they're empty, since appointments can't be made to filled chairs). Also happening today in Travis County, the Black Austin Democrats are meeting at 6:00 at the Precinct 1 Constable Building, 4717 Heflin Lane, Austin TX. If you're a black dem/progressive, or want to support black dems/progressives, or just want to go to a dem meeting and don't want to drive all the way up to Round Rock for a county meeting that's not even your own county, go to this meeting. There's no time like now to start building up your network of contacts, especially in communities that are likely to be hit hardest by Republican legislation. GlyphGryph posted:Send me an e-mail. Something you might consider for your site: maybe a page that lets people submit requests for information for their local parties and sends an email to people willing to root out that information? I'd be willing to try to find information regarding Texas parties, especially since I've already traded contact info with about a dozen or so connected people and might have a better chance to get information that a layman might have issues finding. Also could be useful is a resource that shows the meeting times/locations of state and county parties, either as some sort of searchable database or as State > County page links?

That's a good idea - if not for the site, at least for the OP! I'd be happy to have people take over regional investigations. Especially from Florida, since like half of my requests so far have been for there. If nothing else, do you have an e-mail I can use to send people your way when they come looking after Texas info? quote:Also could be useful is a resource that shows the meeting times/locations of state and county parties, either as some sort of searchable database or as State > County page links? While this would be great, that's a pretty massive undertaking that I have nowhere near enough time to manage. Certainly something I would like to see the national party do, though.

Trip report from Montgomery County, OH's dem holiday party/meeting: Party membership is behind a minimum $25 paywall, which is necessary to become eligible to be nominated to the Central Committee, or to be elected to a Central Committee position during a Reorganization (the next one is during the 2018 primary). The Central Committee consists of 360 seats, one for each voting precinct, and is responsible for all policy decisions of the Party. Getting on this committee should be the primary goal of anyone wishing to change the direction of things here, as this is where the power lies. It seems that this party has very tenuous ties with the state level party as organizations (little more than the name and maybe some funding), meaning that making inroads to the state party and the local party need to be conducted as seperate independent efforts: one does not necessarily lead to the other. There are several interest groups and regional/ethnic/age-based groups within the party, they seem to serve the purpose of fundraising and networking, but that's about it. As far as the party attitude goes, it definitely feels like it has been a largely establishment "good ol boys/gals" club type of thing, but is now shook enough to at least be receptive to new membership, and is looking for more outreach options. Since the website loving sucks, I'm dumping all future meeting dates here: Montgomery County Democratic Party HQ is at 313 S Jefferson St, Dayton OH Meetings for 2017: Jan 26, Feb 23, Apr 27, June 22, Sept 28 7:30pm

Got back from the Williamson County Democrat Party meeting about an hour ago; it was pretty cool, actually. The meeting itself was incredibly boring (it's primarily business stuff) but I was able to meet more of the county party members, and made my interest in being precinct chair semi-official. I also met a fellow goon who read my posts and decided to show up, and who expressed interest in being the precinct chair for his precinct, so I feel pretty fuckin' stoked about that. I also apparently already have become something of a known figure, because before and after the meeting people were coming up to me and introducing themselves with "You're the new guy, aren't you? I'm <name>!".

I'm in Ellison's district so I think the local party might be in pretty good hands, but I'm curious to see the dynamics of a party meeting. I don't really know what, if anything, I can do. I'd still be down to take on some simple grunt work just to help somehow.

So trying to get involved up here in Buffalo seems to be kind of a shitshow. As far as I can tell, the local organization is the Erie County Democrats. Their website is a facebook feed + a big READY FOR HILLARY banner. Membership- as far as I can tell, which is limited- appears to be gated behind a 52$ yearly fee, which whatever, I've donated, because I got money. When you sign up, you can choose which committees you'd like to be considered for. I put a number of them, and then sent an email to the listed county chair asking for more details about what exactly each committee does and when they meet. I've got nothing back as a reply but "Thanks, look forward to meeting you!" and literally nothing else from the entire county party in the last month (I did all this in the days after the election). The absolute only thing I can find is a christmas party on Monday with a 50$ admission fee. I'm considering going out of sheer desperation that otherwise I may never actually meet any of these people. This poo poo is kind of frustrating. I also put myself in as a volunteer literally 'wherever you might need people'. I have money to donate! I have time to volunteer! Let me help you!

I'm bouncing around New England atm, but I'm registered to vote in Connecticut. Any advice for someone like me? The local Democrat party is mostly just a vector for graft in my hometown, so much so that the Republican controlled town council got a very progressive infrastructure bill passed in spite of them. CT seems like a microcosm for the problems of the larger party.

If you are bouncing around a lot you might be better of joining a more focused butg geographically distributed advocacy group than getting involved with the Dems directly

Community outreach should be a big part of the local strategy. Agreed. If the GOP kills medicare, for example, I really think we have to put forward how we can make healthcare work again. People will be dealing with devastating healthcare costs, to the point where even insured a car accident can bankrupt you. That's simply not how things can work. I have two major points (need to really flesh out which of my other positions can stand as the third leg): 1) If you want to save money, there are a few approaches a government can take, but by far the best approach is investing heavily into education. Better education = less crime, less drugs, more opportunities. If I were forced to decide I could only spend money on one thing as a governor of the commonwealth, it'd be education by far. The benefits of a well-educated populace are amazing. 2) If you want businesses to grow, don't hand out tax cuts to mega rich people who are just going to fund their other rich friends' business ideas or just hoard their money. You hand out those tax cuts to middle class people who want to start new businesses. That's strong, local growth. I'll help out the guy who wants to open a Little Caesars franchise before I help out the CEO of Little Caesars. The CEO already has adequate padding that shields him from risk, we need to help the little guy get shielding from risk so we can get new ideas out into the marketplace.
