I'm amazed at the prices Brats are commanding, you couldn't give them away ten years ago. Hell, all these 80's cars. I can't find poo poo anymore for a good price, everyone thinks their Fairmont is a $3000 goldmine because it'll hold a 302. You can get late 90's stuff for less money. Even the worst domestic economy cars are going for thousands, it's ridiculous. How soon until Chrysler's K cars are the price of sn95 mustangs? Is the original wooden LeBaron convertible going to replace the 240 wagon as the hipster car of choice?

I think 80s cars have kinda hit a sweet spot where most of them have been scrapped so they're pseudo rare, new parts are still easy to find if you pick the right car, and they're relatively low maintenance compared to what came before.

A weird eccentric woman in my building has one of those Mercedes diesels to run her what seems like billion kids around in. If the absolutely destroyed interior is any indication of the amount of abuse it's suffered then the bodies hold up extremely well, I have seen it being hauled in by a tow truck before though. I believe Piech's company did the design work for the five cylinder diesels before he joined Audi so the engines themselves should be fairly robust.

I owned a 1984 FWD corolla and loved it. Then later I test drove another one (in that body style) and realized the reason I loved the first one was that I had been driving it almost entirely on snow, ice, and gravel. It's almost painfully slow, and therefore boring on dry pavement; but on loose surfaces with good tires, the light weight makes it really entertaining.
