hello dudchat, i would like to promote my tumblr with this crossposted reminiscence about prozac, the worst antidepressant known to man, because i just spent five whole minutes typing it and that makes it valuable to me back in early 2013 i was on prozac for about two months and i have absolutely no memory of those months except for a) eating indian takeaway and marvelling that suddenly my tongue was incapable of detecting any flavour at all, and b) becoming convinced out of nowhere that i needed to buy a mandolin, i think because i was listening to joni mitchell’s hejira a lot at the time and one of my favourite songs starts with “i went to staten island, sharon, to buy myself a mandolin, and i saw the long white dress of love on a storefront mannequin” and in my delirious mind that was good enough for me. anyway, what followed was a few weeks of feverishly searching every secondhand shop in sydney for a cheap mandolin. i could remember them being full of mandolins previously but this time there were none to be found. i found a sitar with no strings for $700, which to this day i regret not buying, and a medieval lute (!), and a thousand ukeleles and some clarinets but no mandolins. eventually i went to the nearest music shop to buy one new. the big music shop in the centre of sydney was closed down for a few months in between going bankrupt and being purchased by a new company, and the closest one was in crow’s nest, a northern suburbs wasteland about an hour away by bus that i’d never been to before and have never been to again. anyway, i dressed myself that morning in a long flowing white gown with lace embroidery for some reason and hopped on the bus and went to crow’s nest and got myself a mandolin. because the prozac made me so cloudy this trip completely exhausted me, and on the way back i accidentally got off the bus in the city centre miles from any routes that would take me anywhere near my house. also the prozac dried my vagina out so much that the one time i experimentally poked it while i was on the medication it felt like fingering a paper envelope, and this had the side-effect of giving me constant urinary tract infections, so by the time i got off the bus and walked a few blocks i was hobbling like i had a broken leg. so that is how prozac directly led to me dressed up like an elf maiden staggering drunkenly around the sydney central business district with a mandolin for several hours while all the accountants and solicitors scooted around trying not to look me in the eye. i got the mandolin back home, realised i couldn’t play it and didn’t touch it for ages because the prozac also made me unable to concentrate on anything. (later when my brain had recovered i picked it up, learnt to play it and several years later i am now decent at it.) anyway that’s my story. what provoked this was reading an interview where leonard cohen talked about being on prozac and in a zen monastery and when his sex drive suddenly disappeared he got really excited because he thought he’d attained spiritual enlightenment. of course it wasn’t spiritual enlightenment, just a medication side-effect, and when he quit the prozac his penis immediately returned to its former power and resumed its total control over his life. i empathise with this sad tale and anybody reading this who has ever tried prozac, unless you are one of the lucky few for whom it actually worked, probably does as well. anyway i went cold turkey off the prozac and as soon as feeling returned i had a massive nervous breakdown and almost killed myself, so don’t do that, just talk to your doctor and you’ll sort something out. btw i’m fine now and so is leonard cohen, bless his departed soul
