http://fortune.com/2016/12/09/alphabet-donated-its-employees-holiday-gifts-to-charity/

Fortune posted:

Theyre used to getting fancy new gadgets.

The employee perks at Google are legendary, and theyve always included an over-the-top holiday gift for every employee. In the past, the company has surprised its 70,000 employees with Nexus phones, Android smartwatches, and Chromebooks.

This year employees speculated they might get Googles new Pixel phones or a Google Home unit, the companys competitor to Amazons Echo. But they forgot: They dont work for Google anymore. They work for Alphabet. Instead of a shiny new gadget, Alphabet employees got an email.

On Thursday Bloomberg published a bruising story about the new, cost-conscious regime of Alphabet, driven by its corporate re-organization and its ex-Wall Street CFO, Ruth Porat. Shortly after the story hit, employees were informed that their holiday gift this year was a donation to charity, Fortune has learned. Alphabet donated $30 million worth of Chromebooks, phones, and associated tech support to schools on its employees behalf.

Alphabet likely would have spent around the same amount of money on its holiday gifts, so its not exactly a cost-saving move. But the decision signals a shift in culture for the company, from perks run amok to responsible corporate citizen. An Alphabet spokeswoman declined to comment.

employee compensation, including bonuses, is fully deductible.

this is just google trying to break their employees' expectation of bonuses in a way that makes anyone who complains look like an rear end in a top hat.

this, plus a donation to education is usually part of a plan to get the school district hooked on their hardware and software, driving future revenue. so it's not exactly charity.

it would have been better to give employees a couple of charity choices to make it feel more individualistic and to give employees some agency but google sorry alphabet lacks the sort of empathy it'd take for that to occur to them

oh I'm sure it occurred to them but it was nixed in favor of strategic donations to get the the highest ecosystem lock-in in return for the donations.

they should be pissed. paying a thousand bucks to employees making six figures should be nothing to the company and yet it makes everyone feel disproportionately happy for what is essentially a sub 1% bonus.
