Anyone try ultimate general civil war? I really liked the napoleon era setting in the total war games, but the jank AI ruined it. Not sure if it's worth going at or not. Also it's made by the Darthmod guy? Who I hear is a pompous poop?

You can't play as Trico in TLG? I feel a lot better about waiting for a sale now. Too many games in the backlog as is. I started up The Witness to finish it off and completely forgot where I had been/what I had done so I just started a new game. In the very first area I found 2 hidden puzzles and an audio log that I had somehow missed before. Haha.

Yeah, TLG is intensely designed around the idea that you're dealing with an unpredictable wild animal. I'm not sure how playing as Trico would even work.

Healbot posted:Turns out you are the unpredictable animal for giving into your impulse to buy TLG. It's good though. I guess the best test to see if the game is for you is to watch that clip in the above video of Trico batting around and playing with the chain. If your first reaction is "d'awwww I need this game now", then the game is for you. If your reaction is "that looks like such bullshit! Just let him climb the loving chain!", then avoid. It reminds of people complaining about escorting Yorda in Ico: like if you just want to brute force the game and treat the ai character as a nuisance then you're gonna have a bad time. If your willing to treat the character like the thing they are supposed to be and do the things the game wants you to do in regard to that, you should have a good time.

What if your reaction is 'how cute, this abomination is trying to act like a cat and fooling about [number of copies sold] idiots into buying this' while you think about your brothers cat who, without fail, will always sit on your lap when you come visit? Which incidentally does not cost €60.

What if the reason Last Guardian took so long to get out the door was because they couldn't make Trico path properly without pixel hunting, then decided 'gently caress it, we'll just fool everyone into thinking it's an rear end in a top hat cat who does what it wants.'

The only Shantae game I have is Risky's Revenge - is this a series where it matters where I start, or is it more like Megaman?

Nate RFB posted:I finished Dishonored 1, that was a really solid game. I kind of expected that it would just be like a FPS with some stealth sections and instead got something that feels exceptionally like a modern take on the Deus Ex/Thief games of the late 90s and early 2000s. That said I don't think I'm going to bother with the DLC, at least not yet. I'm not really invested in the story enough to know about Daud's deal and gameplay-wise I think I've gotten all I really need out of the main campaign. The DLC is really, really good. I highly recommend picking it up at some point.

I think the Trials are fine, in the same way that the challenge modes for the Arkham games are fine. The game has strong, fun mechanics and it's neat to be able to muck around with them. But the story DLC is definitely the highlight.

From my ten minute foray into Risky's Revenge, it feels like the SNES Aladdin game, but with more exploration and hair-whipping. I like it! There are apparently two games of it on Steam, and another one coming out at some point.

They're kinda standard 16 bit platformers. Most have large interconnected maps with dungeons and you unlock new abilities through either transformations or, in the third one, pirate gear. And yeah Wayforward is very upfront about loving the titty

Yeah, Shantae: Half Genie Hero is out in like a week. The original GBC game is generally fun but has a lot of annoying things, like an overworld that quickly becomes tedious due to size and the number of hits certain enemies can take. Some of the enemies are also rather annoying and difficult to deal with. The dungeons, however, are rad, and as something of a swansong for the Game Boy Color it's a really technically impressive game, visually. The animation is great. Pirate's Curse is easily the best in the series so far but MAN is it full of pointless fan service, to the point where it might scare off some people that would otherwise love the game. I hope the new one tones that down a little bit

They're all really solid but Pirate's Curse is probably my favorite, though what little I've played (first 2 worlds) of 1/2 Genie Hero has been great. I really wish Risky's Revenge was a complete game because what's there is fine, it just feels so insubstantial and incomplete because IIRC it was meant to be the first entry in an episodic series.
