jarofpiss: join your local socialist org and try to keep from starting any drama, be a presentable and accessible face, don't start poo poo, be respectful of other organization's time but try to work with them when you can. Don't assume that there's a political ideology left of Giuliani that you can make fun of without offending someone, even if it's obvious. Almost everyone in my DSA local is ~35 or below and doesn't seem to have too much drama, maybe try them? The DSA gets a reputation for treating socialism like the good thoughts peter pan needs to fly, but that reputation also allows it hold a larger tent than, say, the ISO.

If all you really have around is a fancy book club - which is, if we are honest, what many "socialist in name" organizations amount to - then you will not have a good time. also don't be ageist jeez the best commie i know is like 70 years old

Rated PG-34 posted:How much of this goes hand in hand with anarchism vs Marxism? Not much that I can recall. Certainly not on the analytical end, since the main line drawn there pertains to whether analysis stops before it hits class, and that's not really a bone of contention between Marxists and anarchists. In the later sections maybe there's an echo of it, but it's not an explicit framing, if memory serves.

Aeolius posted:it's not airtight, but I'm not sure how it's "strange," considering the broader discussion. what example would you have chosen in its place? Well, I don't think I agree with the thesis, so that's hard to say. Chomsky says "don't waste your time speculating that maybe the powers that be killed a guy in the absence of any evidence to support the claim." That seems so eminently sensible that it's completely bizarre to me to lead off with it as part of a section on how Chomsky is too dismissive of conspiracy theories. He leads with that, then he ends with this: quote:Ultimately, the average conspiracy theorist has a better grasp of how the world works than the average liberal. Even the most outlandish “conspiracy theory” in existence—that people like George W. Bush and Queen Elizabeth are shape-shifting, extra-dimensional reptilians—is closer to the truth than what liberals believe. The reality is that the ruling class and its public servants really do have a parasitic and predatory relationship to the vast majority of humanity; if anyone should be laughed at and publicly excoriated for their wacky ideas, it’s those who think Hillary is su abuela and Barack Obama is a nice guy who would enjoy hanging out with them. Well, OK then.
