Benson Cunningham posted:I would really be cool with Zaid never becoming an important character. He sucks from what we've seen so far, and he would ruin this all girl, rat queens style posse we get to follow around. He's had less than ten sentences throughout the comic, basically more an object than a person at this point. Saying that he sucks enough that you don't want the guy that's the False/Original Heir, whose retrieval is Allison's sole stated objective, to have any role in the plot; that's kind of hilarious when you compare him to the dozens of legitimately terrible, awful people, literal rapists and slavers and mass murderers, that the audience have been introduced to and want to see more of.

Mile'ionaha posted:Yay! It is good that you are pro-feminism but the time spent reading SFP could be better spent on almost anything else. It is a very poorly written comic that asked some very interesting questions once upon a time, but then realized that telling a story might require them to actually take a position on those questions and poo poo what if we're wrong I dunno.

Your ill thought out stance compels a diatribe, but I will limit myself. 1. If you think you can't get strong characterization from minimal screen time, I have no clue what to tell you. Length on camera means only little compared to theming, narration, style, tone, and story telling. 2. The rapists, slavers, and mass murders (speaking generally) are not protagonists. Only one of them is, and that's Cio, whose identity and self in relation to being a murderer/slaver is her primary driving force. The rest are the antagonists, and are fascinating besides the fact that they murder, enslave, and rape- none of which has any relation to Zaid. 3. I'm fine with him having a role in the plot as frozen man statue- being a mcguffin is perfect for him. 4. I'm not the rest of the audience so I guess I won't speak for them? But those demiurges, thorn knights, and super mercenaries are all more interesting and neato than Zaid already, and it's fun to see them get exploded and fight. Zaid already exists as a character, and to date, his character is boring and lame. Yes, you can 180 him, but I just haven't been made to give a poo poo about him by the story thus far. You can just say, "I like Zaid and want to see more of him." You can have a different opinion about something nonfactual instead of doing a poo poo job trying (and failing) to tell someone else they are wrong.

Benson Cunningham posted:Your ill thought out stance compels a diatribe, but I will limit myself. Zaid is (or was) a normal human guy from Earth-Boring whose only interaction with anyone or anything in the comic was an awkward pre-sex scene that lasted about three pages. Then we see him swept off by murder angels, mid-shout and arm stretching out to Allison from the grasp of his captor like some kind of Disney damsel-in-distress, and then nothing -- literally his only relation to the story is as an object, despite the very introduction of the comic being a traumatic separation between two people that are literally screaming and grasping for each other in the midst of their descent into a nightmare-world punctuated by a horde of spiky monsters astride other monsters. And then, suddenly, we should care nothing about one of these two, when the separation and abduction are the very catalyst for the entire rest of the comic? If Zaid was a woman and Allison was a dude, would it be acceptable or appropriate at all to the themes of the comic and our sensibilities as an audience for Zaida to be a "macguffin" that gets no characterisation or agency? It's hypocrisy and premature judgment. I have literally no opinions of Zaid, and I don't understand how anyone in the audience can have any substantial opinion of him when he's done and said virtually nothing, but that doesn't change the fact that the plot itself revolves around what both he and Allison are, and their separation. Allison's infinitely "better characterised" racial-diversity-poster sorority sisters called him "kind of a creep", though, so I guess we as an audience need to trust that Zaid is a rapist with no redeeming features, and also that he's a boring character that should stay a boring character (despite already being established as perhaps the most important character to the plot after Allison herself), and also that he's kind of just a plain twenty-something vaguely-white male which is just ewww. e: Also, "Your ill thought out stance compels a diatribe"?
