I actually really like Darth Vader's death scene. His cry of "NOOOOOOOOO" when his tie bomber crashed was a nice throwback to the Emperors death in 1983's Return of the Jedi.

How was the set design in TFA so boring? By far my favorite technical aspect of I-VI are the vivid and distinctly realized set pieces. I guess without McQuarrie or Lucas they're a bit lost. A lot has been made in this thread about how unimaginative the ship designs were (which is true), but the blandness of the sets really stands out as the most underwhelming technical aspect. Every aspect of Takodana was just awful.

So I don't really mind the ships and bases being bland on the inside because hey they look like Star Wars, but the exteriors kind of let me down.
I'm reluctant to unrelentingly criticize TFA because I thought it was, y'know, pretty entertaining. But its worse parts weren't the ways it echoed things from earlier Star Wars movies, but the way those things didn't live up to the original. Maz's bar doesn't hold a candle to the cantina, Hux is a dogshit substitute for Tarkin, etc. TFA "looks like Star Wars," but...

With Thrawn being such a major presence in Rebels, I can't help but think its inevitable that we're going to see him as the villain in an actual Star Wars film at some point in the next 5-10 years. What a world we live in.

Mads would have been absolutely perfect for it though, which is why I hate that they wasted him on this bland Rogue One role. gently caress it, just let him play multiple characters, nobody will recognize him with some blue facepaint and a few facial prosthetics.

But uh Human Supremacy doesnt really make sense in star wars. Someone helo me understand it.

White supremacy is a thing that resulted from a very specific event (Slavery of Africans by Europeans) so why is the empire Human supremacist when no such power structure exists to create it

How many humans were with the separatists in the prequels? I'm pretty sure Dooku was the only one. Both the Supreme Chancellors in the PT are human---the most powerful alien is basically in charge of starting Senate sessions and being the Chancellor's assistant. Who are the "bad guys" in the galaxy---you know, the factions who don't play well with others and destabilize the ascendant order? Isn't it basically the Nemoidians and Hutts? What's the only explicitly human world we see? Naboo, where a rival alien civilization literally lives under the ground (implicitly because they were driven there, hence why Boss Nass doesn't want to help no stinkin Naboos). At the end of the movie when the two victorious peoples are celebrating together, Amidala hands Boss Nass what looks like a big glowing energy orb. WTH was that and could it have something to do with the royal palace in Theed literally sitting on a giant underground power plant? Anakin is the first-ever human able to pod race and the reigning champion, Sebulba, has it in particularly hard for him--why? How come the guy selling drugs in Coruscant is an alien? Why are so many of the aliens coded on real world minorities?

The Republic was always speciest.. They were just more subtle about it in the old days.

I can only imagine that its tough for an actor like Mads to turn down any of these big blockbuster roles, considering he's one of the few Danish actors to even make it out of their local film industry. He's probably only been making real money(as in millions) for a few years, its not like his career exactly exploded after Casino Royale.

Yeah and I'm sure some day we will get prequels filling in the stuff between the OT and sequels. I just think it would be cool if they numbered them accordingly.

They could foster a mystique about the time between movies. Just like they did for the time preceding episode 4. It was cool regardless of how you felt about the reveals in the prequels.

Not super inspiring words from Gareth Edwards re: the diversity in Rogue One: http://www.vulture.com/2016/12/gareth-edwards-on-rogue-one-diversity-reshoots.html

quote:

John Knoll, who wrote the original treatment, has two daughters and he wanted to have a hero they could look up to. I feel like one of the most successful heroines in science-fiction cinema is Sigourney Weaver in Aliens — I love her, and as a guy, no part of my brain thinks of her gender. She's just Ripley, that character. We tried to write Jyn as neither male nor female, as just a person. Obviously, she's female, but even with the clothing, my goal with the costume department was to design clothes that I would wear as a guy on Halloween. She wouldn't look feminine, and she wouldn't look masculine — she'd be neutral. Jyn is a person who just happens to be a girl.

The extent to which this guy doesn't get what diversity means isn't super surprising, but the degree to which he fundamentally misunderstands how central a role gender and sexuality play in the Aliens franchise is more or less inexcusable for a professional filmmaker known for working in the genre. This is the gender equivalent of "I'm not racist, I don't see color! I'm colorblind!"
