It was an incredibly early PSP port of a PS2 game, which is why it's kinda trash.

I vaguely recall a lot of launch games on the PSP just having awful awful load times.

The sound quality was pretty bad too, things like the item collection music are played as low quality sound effects with a big pause while it pulled from UMD. The load times between areas were a good 30 seconds.

And the framerate was hideous. I remember an area that was basically a big pyramid staircase and it was barely playable. The game got delayed multiple times before release - I wonder what state it was in before that. It actually runs OK if you rip it to memory stick and push up the CPU clock but in 2006 it was awful.

The PSP one is actually based on the PC version, but yeah it's preeeeetty butt.

It's a shame the only videos I could see at a glance were using PPSSPP, because those loadtimes have to be seen to be believed.

Though, they weren't as bad as that early PSP WWE game that had loadscreens for its loadscreens.

There was an obscure SRPG that I've forgotten the name of that had incredibly poo poo loading times for everything from spells to opening up dialogue boxes.

The last time I messed around with PPSSPP I remember there being an option to simulate the access time of the UMD. I don't think it has drive noises so that wheeeeGAAACKKKKKKK when it access the drive for the first time in a while won't be there though.

I've tried it on my Vita and the load times are nearly gone. So, all it takes is running it on the next generation of hardware and off a different medium.

Vita also made the rear end controls of Armored Core Portables bearable.

Going to travel for a bit soon and I'm in the mood for a mushou game on the vita. Which one doesn't run like poo poo, is the most fun? I've already played Pirate warriors 3.
Regarding Neptunia games. I've recently finished the rebirth trilogy and while it wasn't something spectacular i found the battle system fun. It was the kind of game where i could grind while listening to a podcast. It had some genuinely funny moments not like World of final fantasy though. Woff made me actually laugh out load in real life.

I liked rebirth 3 story the most but i'm going through Megadimension VII now and I really liked the 1st chapter.

Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 is probably the best one on Vita, though it goes all in on the create-a-warrior side, SW 4 might be better if you want one more focused on playing as historical characters.

I thought Orochi got a bit choppy - still playable though and there's a lot to do. Any of the Samurai Warriors 4 games will keep you happy as they're all super fast and I think they all run absolutely fine on the Vita.

Thank you for the suggestion. Haven't played the Samurai warriors games in forever, good to know that they run fine on the vita. Last one i played was samurai warriors 2 xtreme legends. Tadakatsu Honda was a beast. SW4 should be fun.

Pretty sure it would play just as good on a PSP if you run the CPU at full speed 333mhz, early games were locked out of doing this. Running a PSP game on the Vita is the same as running it full speed on PSP I believe.

My vita has seen better days. It can't read cartridges any more, and now it warns me about low battery power even after I charge the thing for an entire day. Just trying to finish Cold Steel 2 before I look at my options for repairing the thing/buying a replacement.

I bought SaGa Scarlet Grace in the end. I'm enjoying it so far, as someone who hasn't really played a SaGa game before. It's easy to see what they're going for by cutting out things like traditional dungeons and town exploration; it's all been replaced by lots of different places you can go and just trigger stuff. The dialogue is enjoyable enough, and the music is wonderful. They paid for live instruments and it's a real treat on headphones.

I'm particularly enjoying the battle system. The infamous loading times aren't actually as big a deal as you think; I haven't had one go over about 10 seconds yet and mostly they're about 5. Animations are quick and clear so you get a good idea what's going on, everyone starts with enough skills that nobody I've had so far really feels generic, and the tactical/puzzle aspects of the timeline and chain attacks are a lot of fun. It's also nice to play a JRPG where characters falling in battle isn't just common, it's almost expected.

Will it end up being a slog? I'm genuinely not sure. I like wandering around and triggering battles and conversations so far, especially seeing the effects of doing that. It requires a lot more concentration than the JRPGs I've been playing lately so maybe the lack of Vita TV support isn't a complete disaster as I'd get more enjoyment out of it when I'm on my commute and able to give it my full attention. I dunno, it's weird but very systematic so I guess if you like the sound of that then give it a go!

The pausing to use skills was added to make the game slower and more tactical after people complained about the first demo.

I assume you're talking about the effect of gas grenades? I think it's a decent way to actually simulate those effects without, like, making the screen all blurry and stuff.
