Now that you say that, it got me thinking: how feasible is taking (and holding) Fiji? That would pretty well cut off Australia from the US.

Grey would accidentally send half of the task force to attack Mount Fuji while the unsupported troop carriers would steam to Fiji. So it would be a guaranteed 50% success!

Perth would probably have been the easier target, but more remote and of less overall value to the Allies than Darwin.

That being said I'm pretty sure Steinkrokkan's Australian invasion in his previous LP landed first at Wyndham and then hopped its way over to Darwin. Maybe? It's been so long that I forgot, and I don't have a link to the thread anymore.

I'm not sure how the AI uses it but Perth is super valuable to human Allies players since it is the only place on the west coast where you can unload and organize fuel and supply convoys from the Middle East/Cape Town. Australia becomes very starved for fuel once the war starts going in earnest and using its ports to support ships relies heavily on tankers getting in from the US and/or the ME.

I love the back and forth, but I'm also a bit wistful we won't see potentially over a year of combat in Japan, all hell breaking loose as he's invaded in 1944 (or 43?), but then the game died (time and chance is the real curse).

This is great too, but invading Australia would definitely spice things up!
Remember when we made you surface to check on a task force you already attacked, to check on damage Grey (in the Ironman LP where you torpedoed and sank a Japanese carrier with a blind shot and the deck crew got washed out be a glitch).
A mad rush for Northern and Western Australia could work... if China falls the next several months.

Any ways to handle the China theater even more decisively? Blocking every hex entrance to besieged cities, especially Chunking with small forces?

IJA: We must invade Australia, the Americans will use it as an unsinkable aircraft carrier.

IJN: That sounds like a challenge. We're going to sink Australia.

We arrive in Darwin, taking out a couple of patrol boats before they flee.

Bombers come after our ships.

They have masses of planes, but apparently no real bombers of any threat.

Their coastal guns on the other hand.....

We get barely any men ashore, and the beachheads are eliminated by a Allied counter attack.

More lives are thrown away.

I'm cancelling the Darwin invasion, the ships are to messed up to carry on.

Looks like I missed a bomb hit.

Notice the part where the other troop carriers sank into waves? The plan obvs. was to awaken Cthulhu with a human sacrifice and have him eat the defenders, alas the stars weren't right...

of course when the defenders are equipped with these kinds of vessels there is simply no winning without air cover :australia:

Are you happy now?
What units and commanders were involved in that disaster, on both sides?

I suspect Australia declares 12/12/1942 a national holiday - this time we're defending against the invaders and are on the other side of the fiasco. It completely over shadow's Tobruk, though I expect the AU division's to be recalled from the middle east.

There will also be endless debate on whether the invasion was actually serious or not.

Fuck you say?!

Look, they only tried to invade Darwin. Not anywhere important.

As for Perth etc - its main benefit is it's a better staging ground for subs, well, with a refueling port up north to boost their range. Darwin is a bit bombable, but from the west coast of Australia it's basically a straight run into the gooey insides of the Japanese Merchant Marine.

Landing in one of the hexes near Darwin and then marching there would have worked better. That's what Steinrokkan did, wasn't it? Anyway, it pretty much guarantees that you would take it, so if you still want to that would give you the best chance to take the city in the near future.
