Just got this game at the beginning of the week on PS4. It's a lot of fun but holy poo poo @ the Viper King. The Ruler Reaction is brutal as hell.

So here's something I didn't know: Mutons can counter melee strikes. All the streams and videos I'd ever watched had never shown nor mentioned this, so I was rather surprised when one of them backhanded my blademaster into unconciousness. I thought he'd instakilled her for a second, and I was pissed.

I built the defense matrix and final verdict is: almost a total waste. Upgraded DM gives you 4 turrets at the end of your ramp in the UFO shoot-down missions which are really not that useful unless you're playing with some mod that generates a lot of pods.

I've been trying to bait out a UFO just so I can use mine and then turn it into a power relay. First ufo flew right past me and nothing, now I'm actively ignoring that guerilla target just to make this a justified construction.

Eh, the defense matrix takes all of the ambiguity out of the Avenger Defense and turns it from a reasonably difficult mission into an almost total cakewalk. But yeah, it's extremely situational and you're arguably just as well served dumping those extra resources into better equipment, which can be taken into any mission. Including the Avenger Defense.

the d-matrix's primary value is the comedy and catharsis it brings to avenger defense mechanically it's impossible to justify

Archon King was absolutely brutal in my game. The armors you get from the rulers are really good, though. Would love to see an Ethereal as a ruler (I love them as villains, I think they're great. Btw that Corrupt Avatar mod is pretty good but aesthetically the good old Ethereal is cooler).

There's a mod that lets you assign high ranking soldiers to the defense matrix to train rookies and thus rank up your lowest level dudes. I think it does like, everyone in your roster at the lowest rank you currently have though or something so I'm sure people will find this unbalanced. I liked it well enough.

The only reason I didn't use that one is that there's a lot of bug reports that it basically ruined their save because the building glitched out and couldn't be selected.

Mans posted:this hacking mechanic is some straight up bullshit There's a few things you can do to increase your tech score, specialists get better with levels, there's foundry projects and having the skulljack can also raise it and rarely you'll be able to get a hack bonus that raises it permanently for that soldier as well. End game hacking is pretty amazing but is a long road to get there.

End game hacking is pretty amazing but is a long road to get there. The risk over the reward from pylons is waaaay too much in the early game. The hack score curve should be less steep so that specialist soldiers start with a higher score outright. Either that or tone down the risk. Or tone the reward down a little but remove the risk - you're still investing a soldier's turn into it after all. "Would you like a 50% chance to get run and gun for your soldier once, with a 50% chance to have to deal with turbocharged pods for the rest of the mission?"

As you say, hacking is bad mainly because of the consequences, the kind of consequences that just aren't worth risking your tactical footing for the remainder of the engagement unless you're at the point where you just don't need the boost. So really hacking just gets boiled down to a stat for possibly getting a nice end of mission reward, and that's it. I don't think you can really fix hacking without completely reworking all consequences and rewards and starting from scratch.

I do like the fact that they actually implemented hacking without a stupid minigame. It's just a dice roll like the rest of the game's system. Could you imagine having to play Plumber's Nightmare or Connect the Dots or Stop the Needle on Green or some other insipid minigame every time you went for a hack, like in other games?
|
# ? Dec 13, 2016 07:19 |

Oh yeah, it's better than a loving hacking mini game, but the value of decision making (to hack or not) needs work. Imagine something that's more like a system, lots of things you could hack, Invisible Inc sort of although that was more about power budget, but I guess then you had daemons as your consequences too.

Close combat specialist on a panicked dude will trigger against friendlies. My now dead specialist just found this out the hard way. Also that stupid Viper King killed 3 of my best guys before I could take him down. I wish there was some warning rulers would be on a mission, but I guess that takes the fun out of it. If your squad is spread out when you reveal, you're gonna have a bad time. I have never lost so many soldiers this early.

I'm a big fan of the Hack+ mod. Failed hacks give you +1 skill, hitting the middle hack gives you +2, and the right one gives you +3. Sure, it's OP by late game, but so are blaster bombs, shredstorm cannons, domination, grenadiers in general, etc.

This is why I wait to activate the rulers until the end of the game. That gives me enough time to get the resources to deal with all but the last one with relative ease whilst also giving me the shadow chamber so I can see what is on the mission. I still remember in my first game it giving me a heads up about chryssalids and allowing me to set up a firing gallery which just annihilated them.
