It's one bottle per transaction, and you can get back in line if needed. We will be there about 5-7 hours before opening to get in line. I already have a bottle of Pappy 20 that my wife got me for our wedding, and it's 2/3rds full, so another isn't the highest priority. What should be my goals? I'm thinking WL Weller, Bartherhouse and George Stagg. William Larue Weller and Stagg are definitely worth it. Elmer T Lee is pretty great too.

George T Stagg is always good too, although I haven't had this year's. Stay the gently caress away from Baterhouse and everything Diageo ever looks at. The Parker's Heritage is really nice too, but I paid a bit for it and i don't think it's worth what I paid. If you're buying it at MSRP it's good though. The EC18s have been going downhill for a bit and I stopped buying them (although I have a 21 from last year that's good, so maybe they've gotten better again? vOv). With that said, I don't have nearly as much trouble finding that as i do the BTAC, birthday bourbon and Parkers Heritage stuff though.

I got a bottle of the William LaRue Weller this year and honestly it's really really good. I would go for that but the Four Roses and the Birthday Bourbon are also good choices imo.

So.....the PA state stores had a limited release lottery for a bunch of different Pappy bottles. Basically if you win you get the bottle shipped to you at the listed price. I got an order confirmation email which seems to mean that I won a bottle of the 23 year for $400

Most of those others aren't THAT hard to come across.

Specs aside it's a delicious whiskey

Here are some lovely pictures of the Nikka Yoichi distillery. They had some special bottles that were only available at the distillery, but really as Weatherman said the highlight is the tasting room where you can try some whiskies no longer available on the market. I really liked the 12 year Yoichi, shame they don't sell them anymore. Also, prices of the more available bottles were actually about 4 or 5 dollars more than what you could get in the city, interestingly enough.

Are there any cheap ryes, or would I just need to look for a canadian with a high rye mashbill? I'm thinking about putting some in a batch of egg nog, since I did that out of necessity last year when I didn't have enough rum or brandy. On the other hand, I really don't want to buy a $25 bottle of Rittenhouse right now.

I think $25 is pretty cheap Maybe old overholt is a bit cheaper? Otherwise, Alberta Premium is a Canadian rye whisky that shouldn't break the bank, if you can get it.

I'm using $10-15 bottles for the nog, so $25 is a big jump. If I'm using it for sipping or nicer cocktails I'll use Rittenhouse.

MacheteZombie posted:I got gifted a bottle of John J Bowman bourbon. Is it any good? I don't drink much bourbon. I like it a lot. It's Buffalo Trace mash, where it gets distilled once, then distilled 2 more times at the Bowman Distillery where it's then aged in upright barrels. It has some similarities to Elmer T Lee or EH Taylor which isn't surprising given the source, but aging it in Virginia instead of Kentucky makes for some differences in the profile.

Can somebody give me a shortlist on some good, easy to find scotch? Does the list in the OP still apply? Friend and I want to try drinking whisky a little more seriously (tasting, etc.) and I'd like to get a few "intro" bottles to start. Doesn't necessarily have to be cheap but I think I'd like to start low and then go up as we get better. *edit: vvvv right I live in Korea so prices are all over the place compared to the States which is why I didn't specify a $ amount, but I think something under 70-80$ are all good. My choices are also limited so it'll have to be more "famous" brands such as Glenlivet vs Glenfiddich, Laphoroaig vs Bowmore etc.and their more available bottles. nervana fucked around with this message at 13:49 on Dec 14, 2016 |

nervana posted:Can somebody give me a shortlist on some good, easy to find scotch? Here's a few decent 'starter' scotches IMO. Hopefully you should be able to find most of them. Rather than go for specific bottlings, I've gone for distilleries. So, for Auchentoshan you might be able to get the 12, or the 'Triple Wood' or maybe another. The little notes are vary basic but should ring true for most if not all of the official bottlings (OBs). Auchentoshan - Lowland, Triple distilled. Light and Sweet, easy drinking. Balvenie - Speyside. Smooth with a little bit of spice. Another ridiculously easy drinker. Clynelish - Northern Highlands. Oily, waxy and a little fruity. Some peat. Aberlour - Speyside. Usually has a fair % of Sherry Cask maturation. Dark fruits and maybe a little wood. Talisker - Islands. Peppery, salty and smoky. Try to get the 10 instead of the Storm or Port Ruighe versions. Laphroaig - Islay. Peat, bonfires and medicine. Personally, at the moment I'm a big fan of Glendronach & Springbank/Longrow - but I'm not sure you'll be able to pick those up in Korea.

What's the word on Hochstadter's Slow and Low Rock and Rye? I got my first taste of rye whiskey when I was in CA last, I'm a beginner with whiskeys and I got hooked on the taste. Went to my local ABC and they had the Rock and Rye along with a bottle from Bulleit. I tried the Rock and Rye and loved it, the taste was amazing, I didn't realize it was a bottled cocktail (old fashion?) until recently, probably going to buy another bottle but I want to try the Bulleit Rye, since I have heard good things about it, especially at that price point.

So the local Total Wine shot out an email to us plebs with "Reserve" status rather than "Grand Reserve" (who get a shot at the real stuff like VW 20 and BTAC) giving us the incredible opportunity to rush to the location at 9AM on a weekday to buy a Van Winkle 10 for $70, one per customer, first come first serve. Yeah, I did it.

Got a bottle of Blanton's Special Reserve 40% ABV today, and was a little disappointed. Still had the great smell and flavour, but the mouthfeel was much more watery and the finish was really short. The Gold is still my favourite bourbon (in my limited experience). Think I might have to stretch for the SftB edition next time and see if that's worth the step up from the Gold.
