My encounter with the Archon King ended via very early repeater too. I was kinda disappointed I didn't get to see much of what he could actually do. I'm not disappointed anymore. Good lord, that is a lot of bullshit.

I thought he was pretty drat cool and a creative use of mechanics that other enemies don't interact with much. Lifting people up is pretty unique, and considering he's supposed to be the last and hardest DLC boss, that AoE air strike interacts with Ruler Reactions in a really nasty way the previous two bosses didn't. Like I haven't played the game, but this is the kind of boss that wipes you your very first time when you don't know what to expect, and when you do know what to expect is still a hard challenge. Any veteran of XCOM who wants more difficulty in different ways not provided by mods gets it from this one. FAT BATMAN fucked around with this message at 06:32 on Dec 14, 2016 |

Keep him as Caiphas "Gift Horse" Cain. Guava dared look him in the mouth after that lucky shot. I imagine it less as a trick shot at an airborne enemy, and more a lucky hit that threw its float engines off balance and sent it spiralling into the ground, at which point Cain climbed onto it and unloaded the rest of his gauss cannon into it until nothing was left but alien hamburger. A hail of bullets is best enjoyed from below, at point fuckin' blank range.

I vote you recruit Eating Only Apples because you need a grenadier with really huge glasses. Surely nothing can go wrong wearing glasses on a battlefield when you're running around and bumping into things and blowing things up. Also goddamn that Nat 20. Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium, continues to do the impossible.

It had bombed my squad, buried my heavy gunner, shrugged off our bullets and taken a rocket to the face with no sign of stopping. Now it was floating above us, carrying my ranger like an eagle with its prey. He had tried to cut the alien down, and now he was about to pay the ultimate price. The mission was about to end in disaster. I looked up at the medley of flesh and machinery, took aim, and hoped like hell. Nothing to do with anything but I always imagine Caphias Cain as being portrayed by Chris Barrie, who played Rimmer in Red Dwarf. Anyway. Good backronyms should be self-referential and pointless, so R.A.G.E. stands for "R.A.G.E. Against Gullible Earthlings" for the fight not only against Advent but the chucklehead civvies who happily obey them.

Jade Star posted:For probably obvious reasons I left out the mission summery and mechanics part of post. I'll get to it tonight and edit it in but the core thing here is that if you end your turn with soldiers having unused actions then the rulers get to react to them at the end of your turn. This is kind of finicky because I ended my turn with 5 soldiers having not moved but the ruler was frozen and that resulted in the ruler doing nothing and not even thawing. After it thawed I ended my turn again with five soldiers unmoved and the ruler thawed and that lead to it getting a lot of actions all at once. I wasn't expecting it to take so many drat actions at once because this wasn't a situation I'd ever tested out before. It seems like another Jake brand anti-fun ruler mechanic. Or at least maybe a counter to just skipping turns to get skills to refresh or something. If you got rid of a rulers armor and had a marksman with lightning hands you could theoretically sit next to a ruler and lightning hands it over and over if you could just mash end turn forever. how does this work, i thought if you ended your turn it's just alien turn and the rulers are aliens, so its the rulers turn anyway

I said it in the video, but I will repeat it here... My jaw loving dropped when that kill shot happened... here I was expecting the video to be short because of the bullshit that had just happened with I think 6 actions, I thought next turn involved at least one death... and then it just kinda falls over after picking Gasmask up. Guava's reaction was hilarious though. I hadn't read the thread yet (Because I don't like spoilers on your videos) so I hadn't read all the name suggestions for that drat lucky shot. But considering he basically just saved you from a wipe, with a good amount of decent rank soldiers? I think Hero fits him well. If not him, then that loving gun. Because drat.

As I said before, the last video was very cathartic since it cannot be overstated how BS the Archon can be: it's only through insane luck that it didn't wipe my team when I ran into it and I was even more lucky when I got an execution on the bastard right when it tried teleporting away so that I did not have to deal with him again in that playthrough. It still ended with my entire team out of commission for a long while and one potential fatality avoided thanks to a lucky saving throw my grenadier pulled off as he was bleeding in the middle of a street. As for who to pick next, I'll say anyone that has a custom bio. And the gun should totally get a name.

The only reason the Archon King didn't do much against me was because I had a grenadier with Salvo and double frost grenades, plus a ranger in the snake suit, and managed to get him down to ~25 hp before he nope'd out of there. Also "Guava Rage" is the best gun name.

Serious question, though: how good/bad are repeaters? I don't remember all the weapon mods, but I figure that a 5/10/15% chance to instakill ultimately means 5/10/15% less enemies if you applied the mod universally (possibly more, factoring in free actions?), and that seems really good. I'm practical and will agree that having all your guns do 1/2/3 minimum damage from stocks is a solid tactical choice, and possibly the "best" mod for any given gun. What I'm really curious about is how the math would work out over the course of a campaign. Stocks are easy enough, just add up all the times the shot missed and did stock damage, maybe add in the times you wouldn't have taken the shot, except that the stock guaranteed the kill. Repeaters are kind of strange, especially early game, since most enemies will die anyway, so you can only count up "additional" damage that the repeater did. I honestly don't know which would have the higher numbers overall, not counting huge spikes like the fresh Archon King kill. I know people don't like luck based upgrades, but I've played enough MMOs to know that sometimes you should upgrade crit chance.

Random_Username posted:Serious question, though: how good/bad are repeaters? More reliable things, like better damage, guaranteed damage on misses, or improved hit chances, are basically all better than repeaters. They secure kills way more often and when you need them to. The repeater's instant kills will like, usually amount to a little extra damage you weren't expecting, or nothing, since you were already going to kill a thing, or were about to.

Repeaters main issue is that they're random. And thus unreliable. I mean, this is the first time we've noticed Cain's Repeater going off. but he's had it fitted for a while. I can see them being useful-ish on a Gunner who generally shoots first, but so far, besides unexpected troubles, enemies have been dying in 2 shots anyhow. With later enemies it may be worthwhile to run them just to give a surprise solution to problems, it's still a 1/6 chance at best to solve a problem for soldiers with one equipped. Which is not great. Certainly not something you can plan around. Stocks, meanwhile, are on every shot, and take a 4-7 on hit to a guaranteed damage with a chance for more if you hit.
|
# ? Dec 15, 2016 01:40 |
|
Don't forget to take miss chance into account. If you're taking only 80% shots and above, that's enough to knock a superior repeater down to 12% chance, and you're also likely using it far less. Saving actions with ammo upgrades is also rather important while you've got smaller squad sizes and Unexpected Troubles, especially given the turn timers.

The trick with repeaters is to throw it on to people who have the chance to take multiple shots a turn. For example a repeater on a sharpshooter works great as skills such as Kill Zone mean that you increase the chance of the repeater activating.
