I'm sure you're right, there's going to be some who just root against the movie from the beginning and are hunting around for proof that fits the narrative they want to happen. Still, this is a new era of Star Wars. Watching it develop and seeing the reaction to each new movie is very interesting to me, even if I'm not a rabid fan the way I used to be.

Well, I came out of the midnight screening last night in Australia, and I loved it but I'm an old fan of war films. It paid tribute to the classics in that genre in all the right ways. Yes, it's a Star Wars film, so yes it recycles characters, tropes and locations (and the fact that it's a droid that provides the comic relief) but I don't think it does it too much. It's not really like any other Star Wars film we've seen. Way more fighting, more death, more emotion in a way that is only occasionally overplayed. When characters die you actually feel something because you care for them. The film definitely has its flaws, with plenty of over-explaining of the plot. Those drat CGI characters are just jarring. I really wish they hadn't done that. Every time I see Tarkin it takes me out of the universe and reminds me I'm in a movie. Such a bad idea. Also, the pacing was a little strange in places. But it had heart, feels way less overproduced than TFA and actually paves new ground for a Star Wars film. I give it 4 stars. Forum Joe fucked around with this message at 23:05 on Dec 14, 2016 |

I thought it was great. Good acting all-around and beautiful to look at. Finale is fantastic. The entire story felt a lot more plausible than TFA (which I liked quite a bit, mind you).

The biggest positive about the movie, is that I feel like it does nostalgic pandering with a lot more finesse than TFA did. Rather than copying key scenes and story elements from the original with just swapping in new characters, Rogue One seems happier just using the universe you know. It still does the occasional "oh, I saw this 40 years ago" moment, but overall it stands better alone as new addition to the universe. I especially enjoyed callbacks that were more about replicating some of the style of cinematography from the originals, rather than actual scenes. My main issues are mostly just some of the characters feeling very flat, in a focus tested sort of way, and some of the CGI stuff is just terrible. Holy crap. I saw this at last night's (Australian) midnight screening, and... Everybody dies. Like, EVERYBODY dies. Even the vast majority of the incidental, crowd scene background characters dies. If you don't specifically recognise them from Episode IV, yup, they're a gonner. ... it wasn't what I was expecting from a Disney Star Wars movie. Enjoyed it immensely, though.

Is it good or bad? Come on now, we have done this before, many times. It cannot be established whether the movie is bad or not until a couple of things happen ITT. The Marxist/socialist themes must be uncovered and analyzed thoroughly and a verdict must be reached on whether the Empire or the Republic are the bad guys. We should know by June or July 2017.

Saw Rogue One at the midnight screening here in NZ. It felt a bit different from the other films. I would rate it good, but not as good as TFA. The ending was rather intense and almost brutal, but I didn't feel as attached to the characters as I did with TFA so it wasn't as moving as it might have been. I will probably go see it again.

Saw it last night, enjoyed it quite a bit. Rewatching tonight in IMAX (two sets of friends got me two different tickets). Best part of the film are the shots; they're really beautiful in many ways. Very stylish and well thought out, with some modern callbacks to old-timey shots, and the action is loud and clear. Also Donnie Yen and new robot character. Worst are the CG'd characters. You'll know them when you see them. They look weird and jarring and, to my eye, they were moving at a higher fps than the other characters. Makes the uncanny valley even worse. And one of them appears throughout the film, pulling me out of it consistently. Overall, I'd say it's worth a watch if you enjoy Star Wars or just action films in general. The story is pretty good, the characters are alright, the action is good and plentiful and well-shot. The tone is quite different from other Star Wars films though, which to me helps in its case.

Probably the worst shot in the film is (no spoilers) a shuttle craft leaves the death star and the curvature of it (plus the size of the dish) makes it look only about 1 kilometer or so in diameter, or the shuttle is suddenly the size of an ISD. It only lasts about 3 seconds but it looks awful. Other than that, all is good visually.

Thought this was absolutely fantastic. Great visuals great story, characters... good enough and as has been said it was something a bit different as a Star Wars film. Will definitely see it again. Only downside was the CG character. Very obvious and very distracting and just a little weird. The tech is not quite there yet to be used in this fashion. I did think Paul Walker was done well, but this... not a good choice and not strictly necessary either. And yet they were perfectly happy to cast a different lady as Mon Mothma?
