it's real simple. your home folder still has its old name, it just displays as the new name as well and can be refernced both ways

eg on my system it was originally c:\users\fishmech and is now c:\users\andrew lastname but \fishmech still works and is the actual name on disk

My internet keeps breaking (I'm plugged in via ethernet) once or twice an hour and requires me to restart the PC to get it to work again. It gives me the god awful error of "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy settings" and then I'm stuck without internet until I restart.

It's been nonstop and is driving me insane. It used to only occur once or twice a week, but now it's happening every hour! Windows 10 is a pile of poo poo.

what can I do to fix it? This has been happening at two separate apartments I've been in, with two separate ISPs, in two completely different parts of England. The problem only started when I went from Windows 7 to 10.

oh that's just gchq snooping then. anyways, doing straight upgrade from 7 to 10 is probably where things went wrong

it is not certainly caused by a direct upgrade, just saying that windows has legacy of poo poo breaking all over the board with major upgrades. generally speaking, in your case i'd first check if i can find something off in network configuration, then see about updating network drivers and such to an appropriate version (like, one back if your current one gets yelled at a lot, or the last one if there's nothing significantly off putting about it). then, if all this fails and i cant find someone else with similar problem on the google, id just reinstall the system from a clean windows 10 image

is there anything cheaper/free than centrify directcontrol that's not built in winbind for binding linux to AD right now

also must be restrictable by AD groups

yes, you will be forced to have your linux machines communicate with your domain controllers in order for your linux machines to authenticate against active directory.

idk what centrify is but what level of integration do you want with the domain? do you want:
linux computer objects in active directory
linux services like dhcp, dns, active directory, etc. to coexist with windows versions of these services
windows user accounts on linux machines
password writeback from linux to active directory
something else

that windows accounts can login to these linux machines using their creds and are also restricted by AD groups set on the linux machine

assuming you have full control over the linux machines, and also assuming you aren't using any crazy authentication scheme involving certificates, you can do this no sweat

graph posted:

assuming you mean computer objects, you don't need this part for the above, and unless you absolutely need your linux computers to show up in aduc i'd recommend skipping this part. plus if you don't have rights to add a computer to the domain then you won't be able to

what make/model of linux are you using

idk how it's supposed to degrade, but these days in addition to winbind you also have the option of using sssd, and if you're really on redhat 7 then they recommend that you use sssd: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Windows_Integration_Guide/SSSD-AD.html

btw i downgraded because 6.5 broke my pcie passthrough and also guacamole doesnt work with the built in vnc
