nah

If it had stronger characters it might be close. But it's held back by having some really boring and pointless characters taking too much screentime.

Only seen it once but not even close to Empire. Feels very designed by committee.

Like it's a good movie, I'm gonna go see it again this evening, the space combat is probably the best in all of Star Wars besides the dreamscape first Death Star run, the characters are all likeable, they did a fantastic job making it feel desperate and epic but it's no Empire.

Actually that's probably the biggest compliment I can give it, that it feels epic. These characters are all irrelevances in the grand scheme of Star Wars, gonna be forgotten by history, but they are absolutely heroes in this story and the movie sells that.

They add some very welcome depth to the Rebellion and the different paths people take to fight the Empire, which I liked a lot.

Just saw it, I thought the latter half was very strong with the first half feeling off and choppy. The characters didn't really get time to be fleshed out, which is awkward when your new villain is objectively the most developed one and you'd rather just go back to his scenes. I thought it was alright?? It didn't really feel like a Star Wars movie and I enjoyed that, I hope they do more like this.

I think he can hear you, Ray.
Saw it, liked it, thought it ended about 2 minutes too late.

The final shot of the movie should be the wave approaching them and it turning to white. The added scene of Vader tearing up the place and a loving TERRIBLE Princess Leia were not needed at all, neither was the fifteenth utterence of the movie's tagline.

I felt oddly unmoved by a lot of the death scenes. I guess part of it is that you know it's coming, and part of it is that the focus is so scattered that people don't really register that much. I mean Donnie Yen and his buddy is great, but they kind of don't do a lot after their introduction. Forrest Whittaker is utterly pointless in his role, as is Mads Mikkelson. I get that it's a payday for them, but I struggle really to see what the point in either character actually was. Hell, DR STRANGE used Mads better, and he was barely in that.

I think that worked to its benefit. There were a cute couple of cameos in there, but like THE FORCE AWAKENS, I disliked it more whenever they shoehorned something in there.

Agree with everything you've said. They used the supporting characters very poorly. You have all these A++++ actors and they don't even get a memorable scene of their own. Wasted.

Mysterious vagina tentacles will devour my penis
Saw this at the midnight screening, and enjoyed it for the most part. It was nice that all the war movie speculation did in fact come true; it really does stand apart from the other SW movies, tonally. After TFA I applaud any efforts to strike out and do something relatively new.

A quick note about pacing though: what was with the first 15 minutes, wherein every scene took place on a new planet? It just came across as jumpy and rushed, as though they forgot to film a proper opening to the film, so ended up having to add that stuff in with reshoots. Thankfully, it does settle down.

Of the actors, while Felicity Jones was good (albeit not Daisy Ridley good) and Mads Mikkelsen effective if underutilised, Ben Mendelsohn was predictable fantastic throughout; utterly steals the film, and a very worthy villain. Compare these performances to the irredeemably bad Forrest Whitaker: was anyone else totally thrown by the straight-up bizarre vocal style he used? It wasn't quite Bane-levels of jarring, but it was terrible nonetheless.

The characters of Chirrut and Baze had me scratching my head. Do their fighting styles fit in this universe? Do their characters not seem entirely out of place somehow? It all felt so random, though their concluding scenes were considerably better than the early ones. Likewise, K-2SO: a comedic note in an otherwise pretty dour film, what started out like JarJar inhabiting the body of C3PO was ultimately redeemed by consistently funny dialogue and clever delivery. The interplay between it and Jyn was an absolute joy.

That said...

Vader's first scene veers between being okay and kinda bad (James Earl Jones' delivery is off throughout), until it ultimately falls off a cliff with that awful pun about not choking on his aspiration. Tarkin improved as he went on, but still felt a little fan-servicey. Another general could have worked just fine, without the need to resort to shoddy CGI. Although even then, Tarkin has nothing on the AWFUL Carrie Fisher, which absolutely destroys any sense of immersion and, in fact, the entire ending of the film. It's bad even now, upon release, so gently caress knows how badly it will age

Otherwise, I agree with DrVenkman about the ending, or at least some variation on that. I thought the bit with Vader going apeshit on the rebel troops was great though, and feel like it should have gone something like Vader scene -> Wave approaching scene -> Opening scene from A New Hope. As it was, it felt kinda randomly sequenced, and ends on an absolute stone-cold bomb of a scene. Awful.

It's the best Star Wars film.

But also the opening 15 minutes are disorienting as hell, some of the characterisation is pretty weak, and there's some cheesy fan-service. It just all works
