I don't know why I actually read through 20 pages of this thread, It's like watching autism in its purest form manifest itself in keycaps. I can't look away. It's taken hold. I'm being drawn in.

Time to regale you all with a horror story that will make you clutch your beloved in terror. The best mechanical keyboard I ever used was the $60 monoprice brick with genuine cherry blues from before they switched to knockoffs and doubled the price. It wasn't terribly pretty, made entirely from shiny ABS plastic and weighed a hefty few pounds. everything was spaced perfectly for my gimp hands to reach, it had a wonderfully useful 10key (gently caress the haters, you're all monsters) and no gaudy backlighting.
Then my bird betrayed me in a way most foul. She was ill, with bird diarrhea, and for some reason I thought she would be okay if I left her alone while I took a shower... I was wrong. She climbed up onto my desk and laid a big watery poo poo right onto the WASD cluster and even the most thorough cleaning has left everything left of the F key unresponsive.

I replaced it with the cheapest mech I could find with genuine blue switches... A Logitech 710+. It's awful. There's like 2inches of wasted space on each side that serve no purpose except taking up even more of a footprint on a crowded desk, and I still haven't found a use for the difficult to hit G programmable keys to the left of tab. Even the blue switches dont feel as nice as the ones on the monoprice. I hate myself for not spending the extra 30bux and getting a WASD.

I too have an older Monoprice keyboard that I naively bought with reds. its really great though

The argument against a topre keyboard is that you don't have to buy a bunch of aftermarket poo poo to fix the glaring flaws.

hmm i only know of the vortex ones and they are designed for dual led switches which the code deoesnt have so you end up with the symbols on the number keys lit up but not the numbers. its not ideal but it's fine

go old, get an Apple Extended Keyboard II and an ADB-USB adapter, that'll get you some sweet ALPS or Mitsumi key switches (the latter on the "made in Japan" variant)

or go pseudo-old and get a Matias USB clone of the AEK II or tenkeyless variant thereof, they make their own switches based on the ALPS design and also have "quiet" variants that feel a little more like Mitsumi switches

I have the mini tactile pro and use it at work. it owns if you like clicky keyboards. I prefer the action to my friends wasd with (I think) browns.

only thing is it has a funky industrial design that looks more like something you'd find in "friendly" consumer electronics in the 80s. curvy, glossy plastic casing. it's really quite solid, but comes off less solid/durable/"corporate" than a lot of mech keyboards. I only notice that when I'm picking it up and moving it around though, it feels dreamy to type on.

why doesn't anyone sell replacement mechanical keyboard PCBs for retro computers :(

I really want to install cherry mx switches in my old Amiga 1200 and BBC Model B, the original keyboards were OK but they are a bit worn after 25 and 35 years.

best you can hope for is decent surplus or the occasional nos

custom pcbs happen, but very rarely and only for common-ish stuff:

Now, y'see, this is where I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what to choose. What I'm trying to do is make a decision between tactile and linear with a comparison to dome switches because that's what I have now. After doing some more research, apparently the actuation force of dome keyboards is equivalent to 45g mechanical switches (despite the decrease in force), so I'll probably go for that.

I'm presuming that you mean that Browns are bad and that Reds are a better choice. But the guys below you say Browns are closer to dome because they have some kind of feedback. Yet I read somewhere else that domes actually have no feedback, meaning they're closer to Reds. Now I'm just confused. I know I don't want clicky switches because of the noise. How should I decide between linear and tactile?

Checking what profiles and uniformity mean I'd rather stick with the safe, standard OEM set without variable weight. So, basically what you're looking for. I guess that rules Topre out.

I was thinking I didn't need O-rings. Why do you think I should get some?
