If the reshoots were for the original cut being too dark then they made the right choice, the movie would have been too dark if they took it much further.

How is the movie dark? People dying doesn't mean dark. The good guys win in this. A robot makes jokes, there's a blind samurai. This movie isn't dark.

my posts are as bad the Current Releases review of Gone Girl

Given that a lot of wannabe script gurus were betting that Jyn was Rey's mother, it's clear that a lot of people were expecting at least a couple of the characters to make it out.

Yeah, what? This movie is a fiesta. There's nothing psychologically traumatizing, or even particularly evil (that isn't in the main series, anyways). I wish they'd gone a lot further, because it would've given it some life. Like if the pilot guy had been super hosed up after the mind-reading alien, or something like that.

So from reading this thread and other parts of the internet, it seems like the consensus is that one of the two major original trilogy characters to be recreated by CG looked good, and the other looked like dogshit. There is no consensus about which was which though.

Yeah that was such a lame bloody fakeout. "go mad" - guy briefly sounded something like I do before I have a morning coffee, then sounded probably more okay then before that scene.

They both looked bad. Peter Cushing looked like he had the flu and Leia looked like she was having an allergic reaction. Cushing in particular was distracting because he's onscreen for huge chunks of time.

No, those were the only characters with much personality, I liked them too. I also enjoyed the white cape guy who seemed to have a good time being evil.

It would have to be a lot darker to be anywhere near "too dark".

I dunno like, it would have to be a radically different movie to be dark whatsoever

RotS and even ESB are way darker than R1

One thing that seems weird to me - won't the empire miss their Super Important Stuff data storage? One would presume that if they entrusted the place with engineering plans of the Death Star, it held more "no other copy kept anywhere else" stuff, or was it specific to just the Death Star? Was the rest of it just Vader's porn?

other then that. i agree with your views.

That being said, my god Vader's "Don't CHOKE on your responsibilities" (wording may be wrong) while choking that guy may have been the worst line in all of Star Wars. For a brief moment it turned Vader into a Disney/Marvel character instead of a Star Wars character.

its "Don't choke on your aspirations."

and vader did little dark joke lines like that in the OT

"apology accepted, captain needa"

and of course, "i find you lack of faith disturbing"

the movie never hit wheadon level dialogue so i am ok with vader doing that little line.

The worst line? Have you even SEEN the PT? That line is Shakespearean by comparison to lines throughout PM/AotC/RotS

What rebel ships were able to escape? I think I saw the transport get out, along with Red and Gold Squadrons.

Presumably when the Rebel command ship was disabled the bridge and everyone who knew were the Rebel base was had been killed. There's a shot of the ship when you see Vader's ship head towards it- is the bridge destroyed at that point?

Was the Rebel General who ordered there to be no extraction on board the Hammerhead Corvette? I think I saw him wearing a helmet on it. Meaning he presumably died too.

There's degrees of speed in hyperspace per Han's infamous parsec brag, and presumably a moon-sized wad of metal is relatively slow.

I liked Force Awakens, but Rogue One is a far better Star Wars movie. While my favorite is of course Empire, Rogue One is a very close second after one viewing. There are many things that I can nitpick about Rogue One - namely, the Tarkin effects (I found the Leia one to be far better, but this was probably due to the fact she had so little screen time) - but I really feel Rogue One is by far the most solid Star Wars movie released after the OT.

The big problem with Tarkin is that his face moves too loving much. I didn't have a huge problem with Leia because Carrie Fisher circa 1977 was already basically a CGI anime character made flesh, but Tarkin was bad because his facial movement rigging is all hosed up and out of sync.

I didn't think Tarkin looked that bad, but I do think they went overboard with him. Not just did his face move way too much, Cushing wasn't that craggy-looking in real life, there were way too many wrinkles on his face. He looked like someone took Lance Henriksen's face and stretched it over Cushing's skull. Or Enki Bilal drawing of Peter Cushing.

Apparently Washington Post thinks the opposite, claiming that Cushing looked good while Leia looked too fake.

Tarkin was weird for me, in that it wasn't weird for me. I entirely agree that he was on a very fine line between realistic and just-off that I kept expecting uncanny valley issues... but I didn't get any. And I felt like he actually got better as the film went on, although that might just have been that there was darker lighting in his second scene (and it was lighting, especially in comparison with Krennic, that I thought was the biggest different; here's an actual human with pores and wrinkles and thousands of skin imperfections changing the way the light reflects on him, and meanwhile plasticine, one light source Tarkin). But I didn't get any visceral uncanny valley reaction. Odd.

They were about equal for me - I didn't really remember Cushing from the original movies beyond "stern Nazi", but he gets tons of screen time to be scrutinized, while Leia is so clearly recognizable despite being onscreen for only a few seconds.

I was tremendously impressed by the CGI. It of course isn't all the way there yet, and it certainly is noticeable, but it's leagues better than any attempt before it.

My son makes us watch Polar Express all the time and the difference between R1 CGI and Polar Express CGI is like the difference between PlayStation 1 graphics and PlayStation 3 graphics.
