Darth Maul was the death star of episode I and Anakin was the death star of episode III. I have no recollection of episode II, but I think there was some robot, so maybe him, too.

They kept showing that promotional picture where all the characters are trying real hard to blend into the various gear they're sitting on and you can tell it's foreshadowing the blandness of said characters.

Zzulu posted:By their description I think I will like this movie? Mike wants oceans 11 instead which I thought was a boring loving mess of a franchise See yeah if this movie had been like Ocean's 11 then they would have complained that it was "too light hearted and goofy when it could have been gritty and dark as a contrast to the main films." I loved the third act of the movie and how it didn't do any cartoony heist stuff because they've already done plenty of that. I also think they are too quick to label things as fanservice. Like obviously the ending, R2D2 and C3PO, Vader force choking, etc, is fanservice, but complaining that AT-ATs and AT-STs show up is dumb because it makes perfect sense for the empire to be using them in these situations.

Agree with them nearly completely on this one. Having five or six main characters with gently caress-all backstory or motivation between them was such a bad idea. I still liked the end scene.

The fact that it makes sense is a nod to the continuity of the whole shtick with in itself is fanservice. Give me something different in my fairy tale samurai space adventure set in the future of WW2.

Oh good, my opinions are in almost perfect alignment with the RLM dudes. Good enough movie with well made action scenes, but too many distracting fan service references, and a lack of character connection limit the movie. The first half kind of fails in multiple regards, it isn't especially interesting, but at the same time fails to develop a connection between the characters and the audience. It would have helped a lot if they spent a bit more time of exploring the theme they kind of half-rear end jammed in about how all these troopers have "done terrible things". All the elements are kind of there floating around, but it's never really pulled together and clearly demonstrated to the audience. Just a couple scenes to establish why these rebels have become jaded with the things they've done in service of the cause, and as a result how they view their suicide mission as a last shot at redemption could have added a lot.

sweetmercifulcrap posted:See yeah if this movie had been like Ocean's 11 then they would have complained that it was "too light hearted and goofy when it could have been gritty and dark as a contrast to the main films." Well they were dead on with their description of alot of this movie as essentially Star Wars porn. Didn't hear alot of people when I saw it in the theater but yeah it totally makes sense. And just thinking it was cool to have an action sequence with a bunch of Star Wars stuff happening was kind of what won me over on it as well, makes me realize that I am somewhat guilty of it (though I more or less hated the fanservice stuff before and after this, especially the Leia reveal). I mean is anyone really going to be watching this movie again for anything other than the last 30 minutes or so? I remember watching it and being kind of torn between liking and hating it, then the last 30 minutes happen and I kind of forgot this.
