"Because you pay money and I'm not interested in living on the street." "What is your biggest weakness?" "My need to work for money so I don't die." "Where do you see yourself in ten years?" "Wherever pays me the most."

The best answer to "Where do you see yourself in 10 years" is of course "In an early grave from working too hard, after dying alone and unloved." Shows devotion to the company and that there won't be life insurance they'll need to pay out. Win-win from the corporate perspective.

At my current job, they told all of us candidates before the interview that they don't ask "standard" interview questions like "Where do you see yourself in five years?" That was the example they gave. During the final part of my interview day, with HR, I was asked that exact question anyway

They're also pretty good at recognizing stuff like "My biggest weakness is that I work too hard!! I just can't stop working, super hard, and I'm too professional about everything!" (and it's slightly less obvious variants indicating perfectionism), so you actually have to assess both yourself and the office environment and decide which flaw the five people you're interviewing with can identify with and/or think is charming.

Once you get the job, degree ain't matter. My degree is in psych but I've been a software engineer for 7 years so no one even looks at my education anymore. I'm also glad I studied psych for other reasons. Sam Jackson wasn't in Shawshank though.corn in the bible posted:repetitive and easy Agreed. My current job asked an interesting variation on this question, or at least it seemed like pretty much the same question. They asked, "What is something people think about you that isn't true?" I thought that was interesting--it was possible to treat that the same way as "What's your biggest weakness?", like you could mention something that people think is a weakness of yours but then talk about how it's actually your strength.

My answer is always either "Honestly, I am looking for a secure career position I can grow within for as long as possible" or "Hopefully here, with some institutional memory, as (insert title that's slightly above the one I'm applying for but definitely within my grasp")," and it really, really depends on who you are talking to.

Every answer is to the question "can you be a reliable worker who isn't insufferable?" because part of the interview is about your credentials but most is about letting them know you've picked up on at least a few of the social cues throughout your schooling and other jobs not to be That Idiot, or That Arrogant Prick, or That Super-Keen Know-It-All, or That Shiftless Slob, etc.

I want them to know that I'm not going to be perfect but that when I do something wrong I'm not going be a hyper-defensive egoist about it or someone who feels the need to hide their mistakes like they're hiding a dead body. Because I know the people I like to work with are not necessarily the Grandmasters of their job but are people who can be honest with me.

It's my least favorite canned question. I love "Give me an example of a time when..." because it feels more like a conversation in which I can both be honest and say something I know my interviewer will relate to. The conversation up to that point will naturally have dictated a direction for my story that allows for me to say "I get what you mean about the challenges you're facing here, and I too, have dealt with similar situations" without feeling forced.
